Strolling Artist 산책의 예술

작가에 있어 '변화'란 평생 작업에 있어 화두가 된다. 자기 속의 또다른 모습을 발견해내는 작업이기도하며 ,하나의 양식과 틀에 얽매이는 자신에대한 깨우침이라는 의미를 갖기도한다. 또한 세상의 모든 것이 변하지 않는 것이 없다는 점에서 그 변화에서 나타나는 새로운 모습과 그것들의 자기화를 통해 만들어내는 작품의 매력은 작가에게 놓칠 수 없는 것이되고 있다. 이것은 비단 구체적인 세상을 대상으로 하는 구상에만 국한되는 것은 아닐것이며, 세상의 축약과 간략화에서 비롯되는 추상화에서 마찬가지로 적용된다 할 수 있다. 구상과 추상의 구분이란 것이 세계를 대상으로 나타내는 미술방법상의 선택의 문제이지 그 어떤 필연적인 구분은 아니기 때문이다. 한편 미술이 일반인들이 보지 못하고 아니 애써 주목하지않는 것들을 심화시키고 강조해서 나타내는 것이라면, 그런 점에서도 작가에 있어 변화를 이루고 변화를 담아낸다는 것은 작품을 창작함에 있어 소중한 수단이 될 것이다. 산책은 뚜렷한 목표지점이나 목적을 가지지 않고 세상의 모습을 눈여겨보고 귀담아 듣는 태도이다. 그리고 도시생태 자연 생태, 우리의 삶을 두루 꿰며 산책한다. 이종우는 산책자의 시선을 가지고 세상을 둘러보며 그 풍경이나 장면 ,상황들을 그림속에 담아낸다. 그의 시선은 특정한 사건이나 장소에 고정해 있지 않고 언제나 유동하는 상태에 있다. 그의 작품에서 드러는 양식은 인간의 문명사회가 만들어 내는 규칙이나 제도들을 자연의 모습과 병치하거나 대비하는 방식으로 다시 생각 하게 만든다. ● 구작들이 풍경의 재현이였다면 근작들은 상화의 표현에 가깝다. 근작에서 그는 문명과 자연 ,동물과의 인간의 모습을 동시에 담아내는 우화 적인 회화 작품을 학고 있다. 색면을 완성한후 그위에 세부의 형상을 표현하는 시도는 이전의 초기작들과 같은 맥락을 가지고 있다. 그러나 그림의 내용은 사뭇 다르다. 그의 근작들은 실경을 바탕으로한 풍경화가 아니다. 그는 실재의 풍경화라기 보다는 현대 사회의 상황들을 화면위에 재구성하고 있다. 현대 사회의 사건이나 상황들을 대표하는 기호들을 이용해서 우화를 써내려가는 이종우는 우리시대를 성찰하는산책의 예술가이다. 실제의 풍경이라기보다는 현대사회의 상황을 화면위에 재구성하고 있다. 작품속에서는 문명사회와 야생의 동물과의 관계를 우화적으로 설정하고, 야생동물 바로옆에 인간이 미역을 감는등.. 같이 공생하고자하는 역설적이 관계를 그리고자 했다. 색점의 반복을 통하여 구축한 반추상의 평면위에 사물의 형상을 재배치하는 방식으로 이루어져있다. 아크릴 물감을 여러 겹 덧칠해서 두께를 만들고 그 두께와 더불어 화사한 색채를 돋보이게하는 색점의 구성, 스크래치, 드리핑 ,드로잉등 회화의 다양한 질감을 화면에서 감상할 수 있다. ■ 이종우

Jongwoo Lee loves to take a stroll around the city and countryside. She does not pay attention to details when she walks. Her sight stays on one place for a moment and then moves on. She does not look for a specific place nor does she have a specific purpose, but instead, she watches and listens leisurely to the things around her, transforming what she sees and feels onto the canvas. Lee is interested in the simplification of expression rather than the precise representation of her observations. ● When she started painting and developed her own color skills ten years ago, Lee used to paint city scenes. Instead of reconstructing the scene in detail, she expressed the scene in broad fields of color and added fine brush strokes and scratches onto the fields. By adding images, she could achieve color field abstraction. We can find that she developed the skills for the simplification of images and painting through color field abstraction in her early works. ● The use of color dots distinguishes her recent paintings from paintings of the past. Color dots can be seen as representing overall color or a grid. The use of color dots gives her a sense of freedom and ease using brushes. Lee paints with thick layers of acrylic and applies bright color dots on top, which enhance the thickness and color and brings delicate variations within consistency. ● Lee uses images from parables. We find zebras grazing next to a laundry line drying zebra printed clothing, horned deer playing in a tennis court, racing tracks and wild zebras, a merry-go-round and zebras, hunters and snakes, and so on. These are included to explain the contrast between civilization and nature. Lee is an artist who strolls around and paints using parables that reflect her observations onto the canvas. ■ KIMJUNKI
