두산갤러리 뉴욕은 2013년 9월 5일부터 10월 4일까지 문성식의 개인전 Sungsic Moon's Drawing을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 작가의 뉴욕 데뷔전으로서 한국인의 정서와 삶의 모습이 담긴 약 10여 점의 신작 드로잉을 선보일 예정이다.

문성식은 2005년 베니스 비엔날레 한국관에 역대 최연소 작가로 참가하여 큰 주목을 받은 바 있다. 이후 2011년 국제갤러리에서의 개인전을 통하여 국내 화단에 큰 반향을 일으키며 한국 현대미술을 대표할 신세대 작가로 자리매김하였다.

지금까지 문성식은 한국의 작은 도시에서 나고 자라면서 느낀 삶의 경험과 직접 본 주변의 풍경들을 묘사해 왔기 때문에 한국인 특유의 정서가 담긴 작품들이 많이 있었다. 하지만 이번에 전시할 드로잉에서는 인간이라면 누구나 겪을 수 밖에 없는 삶의 한 단면의 구체적 묘사를 통하여 인생의 보편적 진실을 이야기하고자 하였다.

젊은 시절의 사랑과 이별의 아픔을 표현한 '청춘'이나, 늙은 노모를 안고 한없이 애잔한 눈으로 쳐다보고 있는 노인을 그린 '늙은 아들과 더 늙은 엄마'와 같은 작품을 보면, 슬프고 안타깝지만 받아들일 수 밖에 없는 인간의 숙명과 그 이면에 담긴 삶의 보편적 진실이 작가 특유의 섬세한 감수성이 담긴 드로잉을 통하여 표현되고 있음을 볼 수 있다. 이번 전시에서 우리는 문성식의 섬세한 드로잉을 통하여 드러나는 한국인의 보편적 정서와 함께 동시대 한국 현대미술의 한 단면을 살펴볼 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 것이다.

문성식(b. 1980)은 한국예술종합학교 조형예술과 예술사 및 전문사를 졸업하였다. 국제갤러리(2011, 서울, 한국), 키미아트(2006, 서울, 한국)에서 개인전을 개최하였고, 몬자 비엔날레(2011, 몬자, 이탈리아), 보훔미술관(2010, 보훔, 독일), 교토아트센터(2010, 교토, 일본), 프라하 비엔날레(2009, 프라하, 체코), 대안공간 루프(2008, 서울, 한국), 베니스 비엔날레(2005, 베니스, 이탈리아) 등 다수의 그룹전에 참여했다. ■ 두산갤러리 뉴욕

DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to announce a solo drawing exhibition of Sungsic Moon, from September 5 to October 4, 2013. The exhibition occupies his recent series of drawing and premieres his latest works in New York. ● Sungsic Moon has started to receive an attention when his work was presented in the Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2005. After presenting his solo exhibitions in Kukje Gallery in 2011, he gained prominence early in Korean contemporary art scene. ● Moon is known for his sentimental drawings of rural area of Korea. His drawings are based on his memory from his childhood, the place where he was born and raised. His drawings possess intuitive capabilities to empathize the viewers with his sentimental and penetrated depiction of the hidden essence of life. ● He often visualizes his slice of life into drawing of people and landscapes of countryside, however, from his recent series of drawing, he depicts such state which everyone has have experience at least once in their life. For example, when Youth, narrates an achingly tender love story of young couple and 'Old son and the older mother' empathize with pitifully tragic reality, his drawings find an echo in everyone's heart. In this exhibition, viewers would have a great opportunity to appreciate the sentimental drawings of a new breed of Korean contemporary art. ● Sungsic Moon was born in Gimcheon, South Korea in 1980. He received his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from Korea National University of Arts, Seoul, Korea. He has had solo exhibitions at Kukje Gallery (2011, Seoul, Korea) and Kimiart Gallery (2006, Seoul, Korea). His works also has been included at Biennale Giovani Monza (2011, Monza, Italy), Bochum Museum (2010, Bochum, Germany), Kyoto Art Center (2010, Kyoto, Japan), Prague Biennale (2009, Prague, Czech Republic), alternative space LOOP (2008, Seoul, Korea), and Venice Biennale (2005, Venice, Italy). ■ DOOSAN Gallery New York
