Between Connection

낯선 환경에서 일어나는 상황과 사건에 주목한다. 전시장에 특정한 장소를 만든다. 공간에 놓인 오브제는 중립적인 접근 방식으로 나와 주변에 거리를 두고 있다. 그리고 개인과 사회를 상징하는 실질적인 공간뿐 아니라, 눈에 보이지 않는 문화적 공간과 같은 비가시적인 공간을 묶어 내기 위한 도구로 사용된다. 시간이나 공간을 초월한 낯선 곳은 우리가 알고 있는 '그곳'에 대한 막연한 향수와 기억, 이미지를 환기한다. 오랜 외국 생활 동안 각인된 특정 장소에 대한 경험은 다시 새로운 장소의 낯섦을 만나면서 『between connection』으로 집약된다. 과거의 나와 현재의 내가 만나면서 공간과 시간, 사건, 감정이 재구성되어 새로운 이야기가 만들어진다. 또한 제한된 공간(혹은 사회)을 통해 다양한 내러티브를 담아내면서 일상의 소소한 인식에 대한 생소한 거리감을 전달한다.

나는 친숙하다고 여기는 상황을 애매하게 또는 낯설게 경험하길 원하지만 주변 환경에 대한 지속적인 관찰을 통해 친숙함과 낯섦이 공존하는 관계의 진실을 엿보게 함으로써 일상의 전복을 꾀하기 보다는 삶에 대한 또 하나의 전형을 제시하길 원한다. ■ 김은숙

I observe circumstances and incidents occurred in the unfamiliar environment. I make a certain space in the gallery. The objet in this space keeps a distance from me and its surroundings in a manner of neutral approach. It is also used as an instrument to bind not only substantial spaces which symbolize individuals and societies, but also to bind invisible space such as cultural spaces as well. Unfamiliar places where transcend space and time rouse us vague nostalgia, memories and images of familiar places. My experiences about memorized places summed up as 『Between Connection』 since they met up with the unfamiliarity of new places during my study abroad. A new story is made as the space, time, events and emotions are reconstructed when past ego met present ego. Moreover, through the limited space (or society), the unfamiliar sense of distance regarding an ordinary and trifling recognition is delivered as various narratives are contained in them. Although, I want to experience familiar daily lives in a vague or unfamiliar way, I also like to present another model of life through the continuance observation on space and objects by watching for the truth of ordinary lives with a coexistence of familiarity and unfamiliarity, rather than plotting to overthrow ordinary lives. ■ KIMEUNSOOK
