옷의 사회학, 옷의 인간학 ● 의식주는 인간이 삶을 유지하는 가장 기본적인 수단이자 조건이지만, 이를 통해 한 인간의 삶이 규정하기도 한다. 과거 봉건시대에는 이러한 구분에 의해 사회가 유지되고 질서가 갖추어졌다. 근대 이후 신분과 계급은 소멸되었지만, 과거의 엄격했던 신분과 계급의 구분은 어쩌면 의식주를 통해 여전히 엄존하는 것인지도 모른다. 좋고 큰 집과 화려한 의상, 그리고 비싸고 기름진 음식은 여전히 계층적 구분의 잣대로 작용하고 있다. ● 나의 작업은 의식주라는 삶의 가장 기본적인 조건 중 옷에 투영된 의미를 읽어내어 현대인에게 있어서 삶과 그 의미에 대한 진지한 성찰을 담아내는 것이다. 나에게 있어서 옷은 현대라는 시공 속에서 이루어지는 한 인간의 일상과 그 흔적들에 접근하는 수단이자 매개이다. 그것은 과거의 권위와 신성에서 벗어난 것일 뿐 아니라 전적으로 인간 그 자체와 현대라는 시공에 바탕을 둔 것이다. 현대인은 어쩌면 자연을 통해서가 아니라 옷의 변화를 통해 먼저 계절의 변화를 확인하는지도 모른다. 이런 의미에서 본다면 현대인에게 옷은 또 다른 자연일 것이다. 또 이미 폐기되었다고 하지만 여전히 존재하는 신분에 대한 가장 분명한 징표일 것이다. 그것은 때로는 신분을 대신하기도 하지만, 경우에 따라서는 한 인간이 처한 상황을 가장 절실하고 솔직하게 표현해주는 상징이 될 것이다.

현대의 소비사회에서 사물은 기호와 이미지에 의해 그 가치가 결정된다. 소비사회에 있어 사물은 사회, 문화적 분석을 움직이는 핵심적인 주제가 되기도 한다. "현대적 사물의 '진리'는 무엇이 쓰인다는 데 있는 것이 아니라 그것이 특정한 의미로 작용을 한다는데 있는 것이다. 이것은 도구로서가 아니라 기호로서 조작되는 것이다."라는 말은 바로 이를 설명하는 말이기도 하다. 사회라는 질서 속에서의 인간은 필연적으로 사회성을 통해 자신의 실존을 확인하게 된다. 옷은 바로 인간으로 하여금 사회로 나가게끔 부추기고 자리매김해 주는 것이다. 그렇게 함으로써 생물학적인 존재인 몸을 인간관계가 가능한 사회적인 존재로 진화시켜 하나의 해석 가능한 존재로 만든다. 사람들은 다른 이들이 무엇을 입고 있는지에 따라 그들은 판단하게 마련이다. 그것이 바로 사회적 위치와 가치를 판단하여 부여하는 것이며, 옷은 이러한 과정에서 매우 유용한 상징과 지표로 작용하게 마련이다. 이는 바로 옷이 지니고 있는 사회적 기능이라 할 것이다.

육체로부터 이탈되어 옷걸이에 걸려 진 옷은 바로 한 인간의 사회적 위치와 현실의 상황을 반영해 주는 강력한 메시지를 지니고 있다. 옷은 옷걸이에 걸려 있지만, 그것은 여전히 일상의 흔적들을 고스란히 기록하고 있다. 그것은 생존을 위해 사회적 질서에 순응하고, 현실적 가치에 충실히 반응한 결과들이다. 현실에서의 삶은 한 개인의 인간적 가치에 앞서 사회적 가치가 두드러지게 마련이며, 개인이 지니고 있는 고유한 존엄성은 때때로 희석되고 간과되기 십상이다. 그러나 이는 현대라는 시공 속에서, 또 사회적 인간으로서 삶을 영위하기 위한 가장 기본적인 조건이자 피할 수 없는 현실적 상황이기도 하다. 비록 옷은 현실에서의 고민과 번뇌, 그리고 땀과 눈물을 직접적으로 반영하지 않지만, 나는 옷을 통해 사회적 가치 뒤에 자리하고 있는 가장 인간적인 것들을 읽어내어 소통함으로써 위로와 안식을 제공하고자 하는 것이다. 그것은 의식주라는 생물학적 생존의 기본적인 조건으로서의 옷이 아니라 인간으로서의 존엄에 대한 존중이다. ■ 강민정

Sociology of clothes, Anthropology of clothes ● The necessities of life is the most basic method and condition for human to maintain living but they also defines one person's life. In feudal society, these divisions maintained the order and the society. After the modern society, the social class and rank have been ceased but they do exist through food, clothing, and shelter. Luxurious and large house, fancy clothes and expensive fatty food are still used as the standard to classify one's class. ● My work attempts to read the meaning of clothes, one of the necessities of life and put earnest introspection of the meaning of life of the contemporary men. To me, clothes is the method to approach to someone's daily life and its trace that is done in the space and time of modern days. It is not only apart from the prestige and holiness of the pass but it is completely based on the human himself and the space time of modern days. ● Contemporary men realizes the changes of seasons not through the nature but from the changes of the clothes. That being said, to contemporary people, clothes is another nature. Also, even though it is not applied anymore but it is the most obvious sign for one's social status. It sometimes displaces social class but it can also be the most desperate and honest symbol representing someone's situation. ● In the modern consuming society, an object's value is defined by people's taste and image. It can also be a critical subject that moves the social and cultural analysis. It is what it meant by "the 'truth' in modern society is not that it is being used in something but in it act as a certain meaning. It's not operated as a tool but as a sign." In the order of society, human inevitably confirms one's existence through social nature. Clothes incite people to proceed to society and to settle down. By doing that, it evolves the biological body as social being that can have human relationship and makes it something that can be interpreted. People judge others by how the others wear clothes and it is how they assign social status and values. During this process, clothes is very useful symbol and index and this is the social function that clothes has. ● Clothes that is detached from body has strong message that reflects one's current situation and social status. Even though the clothes is hanged on the hanger, it still records all the traces of daily life. It is the result of people adopt to the social order to survive and react to the real values. Life in reality does distinguish social values more than one humane values and one's dignity is sometimes overlooked and diluted. ● But it is also the most basic condition and inevitable real situation for us to live as social being in the space time of modern days. Even though clothes does not reflect the worries, agony and the sweat and tears in the real life but I attempt to provide comfort and rest by communicating and reading the most humane things behind the social values of clothes. That is the respect to human dignity, not as the clothes, the necessity of life, the basic condition for biological survival. ■ KANGMINJUNG
