현대 도시풍경의 변종산수 ● 임희성은 한국화를 그리면서도 새로운 조형성을 적극적으로 모색해 온 젊음이 넘치는 작가이다. 그는 보다 새롭고 현대적인 한국화를 위해 자신의 삶의 주변을 깊이 있게 살피며 이를 토대로 사색을 즐기는 작가로서 독특한 회화적인 맛을 드러낼 수 있는 조형적인 감성을 위하여 많은 공력을 쏟아왔다. 그뿐만 아니라 한국화의 채색에서만 느낄 수 있는 독특한 색감에서 드러나는 회화적인 맛과 젊은 시절에 옥탑 방에서 바라보았던 서울에 대한 생각과 느낌 등을 조화롭게 표현하는 데 많은 관심을 가져왔다.

이런 연유로 그의 그림에서는 한국적인 면과 더불어 서양화보다 더 강한 조형의 흔적 및 강렬한 모노 계통의 색채 등이 공존하므로, 고정관념 속의 한국화의 이미지가 보다 새롭게 변화한다. 그러기에 임희성의 그림은 서양의 현대미술이나 서양회화의 양식을 단순하게 좇아가는 것이라기보다는 우리 시대 한국인들의 삶을 조형적으로 압축시킨 것이며, 한국인으로서의 감흥을 공간과 형태 그리고 색 등을 통해 조형적으로 자연스럽게 드러낸 작품이라 생각된다. ■ 장준석

Transformed Landscapes in Modern Society ● Yim Heeseong is an emerging artist who endeavors to seek a new formativeness of Korean painting. The artist has been working on modernized Korean traditional painting via elaborately observing things from his daily life. He is focused on developing his very own figurative language and sensitivity and yet harmonizing them with his contemplation and feelings towards the city – Seoul. ● He expresses the image of dreary cities, together with the beauty and inspirations of nature beyond it. By having this, he seemed to have made an aesthetical achievement via using the intensity and depth of colors, and geometrical expressions which implies the images of the cities. The semi-figurative and abstractive compositions draw spectators' attention not only because its modernity and genuineness, but also its stability of forms and the depth of coloring. ● Yim presents his attachment to Korean traditional painting in a modern way. He also tried to compress both impression of the modern society and nature of the universe which is derived from mountains, and express the image of cities always dwells in his mind. Following on this, he started working on the series of 「transformation」, and uniquely creating the senses of form, color and space with simple and vivid colors. ● Triangular geometrical templates colored with yellow, red and green provide the abstract and figurative features, and simultaneously creates simplified sense of space. This highlighted triangles present Korean identity as it schematized Korean traditional landscape paintings. All these works are probably based on the perception of worth of Korean characteristics. In his recent works, Yim employs the idea of delicate texture and colors based on the beauty and the authenticity of Korea. ● This is why his 「transformation」 draws the attention. Although it captures the image of a city along with nature, one can see his psychological approach and artistic gestures via diverse techniques, geometrical figures and pictorial schemes related to Korean characteristics. Delicate and sensible touches can be found in his paintings. This invites uniqueness to his practice. More specifically, the image of cities, nature and human beings is inherent various meanings and arouses humanity and tradition. Yim has been thoroughly observing diverse sceneries from his rooftop house for a long time. His adverse reaction towards complex cities gradually constructed a new form of composition and it plays a vital role in his practice. ● There is intensive contrast between distinctive form and the colors in his paintings which reinterpret the authenticity of Korean traditional painting. Hence, Yim's works do not simply follow either contemporary art or the routine of the Western world. He rather executes authentic space and colors which implies the daily lives of today. ■ Jang Junseok
