통쾌한 풍자와 보는 즐거움이 있는 전시『life style』 ● 조미숙 작가의 그림은 경쾌하고 재미있다. 보는 이의 눈이 즐겁고 마음이 즐겁다. 그러나 즐거움과 재미가 가볍다는 뜻은 아니다. 풍부한 상상력으로 보여주는 여러 형태의 풍자가 통쾌하다는 말이다.『life style』이라는 제목의 이번 전시는 입술, 하트 등 여러 가지 소재로 구성되어 있다. ● 입술에 장미가 가득하다. 입술이 장미이고 장미가 입술이다. 그런데 그 입술이 아니 장미가 명품 가방 위에 있다. 장미는 구상인데 그 의미는 추상이다. 그렇다면 작가는 입술과 장미 그리고 명품 가방을 통해 무엇을 이야기하려고 한 것일까?

그러나 많은 이는 작품을 보는 순간 이런 복잡한 생각을 하기보다는 아름답다는 생각을 하면서, 화폭 속의 명품 무늬와 장미 속으로 빨려 들어간다. 나는 이런 흡인력이 조미숙 작가의 탁월함이라고 생각한다. 그의 그림을 보는 이들은 이렇게 화폭 속으로 빨려 들어가 아름다움을 한참 바라본 후에야 화가가 왜 이런 그림을 그렸을까를 생각하게 된다. ● 많은 여인들의 마음 곳에 있다는 화려한 욕망을 그린 것일까? 이렇게 아름답고 화려한 사랑을 해보고 싶다는 생각을 그린 것일까? 물론 작가의 의도는 그렇지 않을 수도 있다. 그러나 상관없다. 작품을 보고 느끼는 감정과 해석은 관람객 개개인의 고유 권한이기 때문이다. 따라서 보이는 대로 느끼면 되는 것이고, 그것은 그림을 보는 사람이 가질 수 있는 자유다. ● 하트 무늬 속에서 장미가 쏟아져 나오고 명품 가방 무늬가 분수처럼 솟아오르는「하트 시리즈」도 재미있다. '사랑만으로는 부족하니 장미도 주시고, 명품 가방도 주세요'라고 말하는 것 같아 빙그레 웃음이 나온다. '배고픈 사랑'보다는 현실적 욕망을 채워줄 수 있는 사랑을 원하는 젊음이 많은 시대이기에 이런 그림을 그린 것이리라. ● 조미숙 작가의 작품에는 재미있는 소재만 있는 건 아니다. 어두움과 슬픔도 있다. 검정색 하트 속의 입모양을 보면 '슬픈 입'이다. 명품이 가득한 세상 속에서 명품을 가질 수 없는 사랑이기에 검은 색이고 그래서 입모양도 슬픈 모양일 것이다. 자본주의 속의 슬픔', '부익부 빈익빈'을 그린 것 같다는 생각이 드는 작품이다.

그러나 조미숙 작가는 이런 암울한 현실을 슬퍼하지만 않는다. 검은색 바탕의 무늬위에 붉은 혓바닥을 그린 작품은 사치와 허영으로 가득한 세상에 대한 조롱이다. 명품 무늬 속에 개를 그린 작품도 재미있다. 명품 무늬를 뒤집어 쓴 개가 명품을 표시하는 액세서리를 물고 있다. 그러나 개의 표정은 어둡다. 개도 명품을 물고 다니는 세상이 즐거운 세상은 아니라는 조롱이리라. ● 그렇다. 조미숙 작가의 화폭 속에는 이야기가 있고 조롱이 있고 비판이 있다. 그러나 그의 화폭은 거칠지 않고 오히려 차분해서 설득력이 있다. 나는 이런 세련된 풍자와 날카로운 비판의식이 조미숙 작가의 회화적 특징이고 작가정신이라고 생각한다. 이번『life style』에 출품된 작품들에는 그런 그의 작가적 특징이 잘 나타나있고, 그래서 보는 즐거움이 있다. ■ 이충렬

Life Style, an IncisivelySatirical and Pleasant Exhibition ● Mi-sook Cho's paintings are cheerful and very amusing. Viewers find them pleasant but this doesn't mean that this pleasure and genuine amusement are callow or superficial, just that the various types of satire used, combined with a fertile imagination, are delightful. ● This exhibition, titled Life Style, consists of various materials, including lips and hearts. The lips are full of roses: lips are roses and roses are lips. But the roses, not lips, are found on a brand-named bag. The rose is figurative but its meaning is abstract. What exactly is the painter trying to say by using lips, roses and brand-named bags? ● Before such complex symbolic thought, most of the people who see these works are drawn in by the noble patterns among the roses the moment they see them, thinking that they are merely beautiful. I think this seduction results from the excellence of Mi-sook Cho's vision. Those who see these paintings start thinking about why the painter created them only after being absorbed by the paintings and watching them for a good long while. ● Is she drawing out of a desire for luxury that many women experience deep down in their hearts? Or perhaps it plays on a quest to experience such a beautiful and luxurious love? Of course, the painter's intention may be something else entirely but none of this matters. Feeling and interpreting the work is at each individual's sole discretion. Therefore, you feel as you see fit, and that is the freedom of those who see the paintings. ● The "Heart series" is also interesting. In it, roses are popping out of a heart pattern and patterns made from a brand-named bag are shooting up like a fountain. This bringsa smile because it looks as if the painter is saying,"Love is not enough. Give me roses and branded-bags as well."Perhaps the reason is modern society's materialism. Today, many young people want a love that can satisfy their real desire rather than just their "hungry love." ● It is not true that there is only amusement in Mi-sook Cho's work. There is darkness and sorrow. The lips in the black heart have a "sad" shape because this is a love that cannot have luxury items in this world full of luxury.The color is black and the shape denotes unhappiness. Perhaps this signifies sorrow from consumerism and "the rich-get-richer and poor-get-poorer" aspect of capitalism. ● However, Mi-sook Cho is not just grieving at such a gloomy reality. Her work with a red tongue over a black-patterned background sneers at a world full of extravagance and vanity. The painting with a dog in luxurious setting is also interesting. A dog covered with luxury patterns holds an accessory marked with a luxury brand in its mouth. But the dog's face is gloomy. It might be a judgment of a worldwhere even dogs are obliged to hold luxury items in their mouth. ● There are stories, satires and criticisms in the paintings of Mi-sook Cho. However, with her fine skill and careful execution, they lack rough obviousness, and so with their calm presence they calm viewers. As a result, the paintings are persuasive. I think her refined satire and incisive criticism play well with her picturesque aesthetics and artistic spirit. In the paintings exhibited in this Life Style, Mi-sook Cho's characteristic skill is on display for the world to see, providing pleasure and social commentary. ■ Choong-Ryul Lee
