모든 기억은 사라지지 않는다 다만 의식하지 못할 뿐이다. 인간은 태어나서 생을 마감할 때까지 수 많은 경험을 한다. 그 많은 경험들을 모두 다 기억하는 것은 아니다. 기억을 하지 못한다고 해서 기억들이 사라지지는 않는다. 그렇다면 사라지지 않은 기억들은 어디에 있는 것일까? 우리의 기억은 어떤 매개체를 통해 의식과 무의식을 쉼 없이 넘나들고 있다.

그렇다면 의식과 무의식의 경계는 무엇일까? ● 의식과 무의식은 이분법으로 나누듯이 나뉘어지는 것이 아니다. 두 세계의 경계는 명확하지 않다. 인간의 기억과 경험들은 무의식의 세계에서 의식의 세계로, 의식의 세계에서 무의식의 세계로 서로 왕래 한다. 다만 외부의 자극을 통해 무의식의 세계에 있던 것들이 의식의 세계로 떠 오르게 된다. 이이립은 이를 공진으로 보았고, 그러한 공진은 작품의 영감으로써 다가온다. ● 공진의 사전적 의미는 '외부에서 들어오는 진동이나 신호를 통해 어떤 특정 주파수의 진동이나 신호가 강해지는 것' 이다. 즉 무의식 속에 부유하고 있던 희미한 오래된 기억이 외부의 자극이나 특정한 상황에 마주쳤을 때, 의식의 세계로 부상하게 된다. 하지만 침전 되어 있던 무의식의 기억들이 한꺼번에 쏟아져 나와 그것들이 무질서하게 섞이면서 여태까지 보지 못한 새로운 형태를 만들어 낸다. 이이립은 공진을 통해 만들어진 무의식의 기억들이 의식의 세계로 나오는 찰나의 형상들을 캔버스에 표현하고 있다.

세면대 위에 비정형적 형상이 솟구치고 있는 작품은 물로 씻겨진 물감이 세면대의 하수구를 통해 소용돌이치며, 섞이면서 알 수 없는 형태들이 만들어진 순간, 자신이 경험했지만 의식하지 못한, 즉 무의식 속에서 부유하던 기억들이 무언가 알 수 없는 존재에 의해 의식의 세계로 뿜어져 나오는 순간이 형상화 된 것이다. 각각의 기억의 파편들은 시간의 순서도 없고, 질서도 없다. 각기 다른 시간의 기억들이 어느 일정한 형태가 아닌 무질서하게 휘몰아치며 섞이면서 여태까지 보지 못한 새로운 형태의 기억의 조합들이 만들어지고 있다. 이이립의 작품을 보면 시간이 존재하지 않는 듯 하다.

이이립에게 있어 공진은 작품의 출발점이자, 중요한 모티브이기도 하다. 공진을 통해 저 깊숙히 숨겨져 있던 기억들이 의식의 세계로 나오면서 알 수 없는 형상으로 나타난다. 공진을 통해 형상화된 작품은 또 다시 관객에게 다가가 관객의 무의식 속에 잠들어 있는 기억과 경험의 파편들을 끄집어 내는 공진의 역할을 하는 듯 하다. ● 작가의 무의식 속에 존재 해 있던 기억과 경험의 파편들이 의식세계로 떠 오르면서 만들어낸 내러티브가 작품 하나하나에 잘 녹아있는 이번 전시는, 잠재되어있던 알 수 없는 무언가가 뜻하지 않는 순간에 공진을 만나며 부유하게 되는 기억의 파편들과, 그 파편들이 내 안의 수많은 순간들과 기억 사이사이에 지층같이 존재하고 있음을 보여주고 있다. 2010년 『Strange』展 이후 오랜 시간 동안 준비해온 이이립의 이번 전시는 2012년 2월 9일부터 29일까지로 총 15점 의 작품을 공개한다. ■ UNC 갤러리

All our memories are with us forever even though they remain subconscious. Human beings undergo numerous experiences from birth to death. No one remembers all those experiences thoroughly. However, it does not mean that those memories disappear into thin air. Where are those lingering memories, then? Our memories continue to hover between the conscious and subconscious minds driven by a certain medium. ● Where do you think the boundary between the conscious and subconscious minds? ● As a matter of fact, it is impossible to distinguish the conscious from subconscious minds in black and white. The boundary between them is blurred. Human memories and experiences come and go constantly across this boundary. In the meantime, those in the subconscious world rise up to the conscious world, triggered by external stimulus. Eerip regards it as resonance and such resonance inspires his work of art. ● The dictionary definition of resonance is a phenomenon that amplifies variations or signals of a particular frequency through those coming from the outside. In other words, a vague memory, embedded in the subconscious mind, emerges to the surface when facing a particular circumstance or external stimulus. On such an occasion, a completely new form of memory is created, as a flood of memories underneath the surface pours out with all mixed up in a disorderly way. On canvas Eerip embodies shapes which illustrate subconscious memories which are formed through resonance and float to the conscious world. ● In one of his works, irregular shapes are soaring from the sink. This piece of work embodies a moment when experienced, but submerged memories are spewed out into the conscious world by something unknown, as paints are dissolved in water, getting mixed and swirling into the sink as something unrecognizable. Each piece of memories does not have a time sequencing or order. Memories, created at different times, are mixed into chaotic shapes, giving birth to entirely new combinations of memories. Time does not seem to exist in Eerip’s works. ● Resonance is not only the starting point of Eerip’s art work, but also the main motif. Resonance summons memories buried in the depths of minds into the conscious world in unrecognizable forms. An art piece, formed through resonance, seems to prompt deep buried pieces of memories and experiences of audience to rise to the surface, acting as resonance itself. ● The artist displays his narrative merged into every piece of work which was created as the pieces of his memories and experiences rose into the conscious world. His works enable audience to see submerged pieces of memories emerging unexpectedly to the surface through resonance as well as the pieces layered among numerous moments and memories of life. Since his previous exhibition, in 2010, Eerip has prepared for his next exhibition for a long time. It will show a total of 15 pieces of his work from February 9th to 29th 2012. ■ UNC Gallery
