행복한 얼굴 ? ● 김석은 조각에 과감한 색채를 덧씌웠고 평면, 표면에 고부조를 활용해 일루젼을 극대화하는 한편 균질한 붓질을 통해 굴곡이 심한 요철의 피부에 기술적으로 정교하게 구사된 색 면, 선을 그려 넣었다. 조각적 효과와 회화적 효과가 가파르게 부딪쳐서 이룬 작업이다. ● 사실적이면서도 어딘지 추상적인 분위기로 감싸인 조각, 키치적이고 인공의 내음이 강렬한 오브제와 유사한 조각, 평면을 밀고 융기하듯 올라와 형성된 부드러운 굴절로 이루어진 조각, 그러니까 표면에 일련의 파동을 일으키는 조각, 동시대 소비사회의 강한 시각적 스펙터클과 색채감각을 연상시키면서 그 위력에 눌린 얼굴 하나를 기념비적으로 각인하고 있는 그런 조각이다.

그 안에 있는 얼굴은 대중매체를 통해 익숙해진 누군가의 얼굴이자 소비사회의 캐릭터이고 스마일이자 익명의 존재들이다. 정면의 얼굴상뿐만 아니라 측면이기에 관자로 하여금 온전한 얼굴상을 확보하게 위해 필요한 시점을 스스로 찾아 이동하고 배회하게 한다.

화려하고 강한 색채들은 소비사회의 유혹적인 색채를 연상시키는 한편 인공의 상품 디자인, 화장 등의 색채에서 추출한 것들이다. 일정한 패턴이나 줄무늬(컬러바)가 얼굴 전체를 가면처럼 혹은 분장처럼 잠식해나갔다. 그로인해 얼굴에 대한 구체적인 정보나 표정은 가려지는 편이다. 익숙하고 친근한 캐릭터들이지만 그 위로 겹쳐지는 색채와 줄무늬로 인해 흡사 눌리거나 억압되는 듯한 느낌도 든다. ● 이 역설은 화려하게 번쩍이는 소비사회의 색채기호들이 행복과 위안을 약속하지만 실상은 웃음 짓는 얼굴을 모호하고 이상한 표정으로 만들어놓는 편이다. 자동차 본네트(후드)위에 그려진 배트맨과 차두리, 여러 스타들의 얼굴 그리고 캐머플라쥐 문양위에 그려진 스마일 형상 등은 그런 역설을 짐작케 한다. ■ 박영택

HAPPY FACE ? ● Kim, Suk covered daring color at a sculpture, maximizing a illusion that utilizes a high relief at a flat and surface, while he technically drew color surfaces and lines which is exquisitely expressed in uneven skin curved through stroking with a regular brush. A sculptural and painting effect is a work which is made by a steepy combination. His work is a sculpture covered by any abstractive mood with reality, sculpture like an objet which kitschly and artificial smell are intentive, a sculpture by smoothy inflected which is formed to rise like uplift to push a flat, a sculpture which sets a serious of wave at surface, a sculpture curving monumentally a face suppressed by its power with associating strong visual spectacle and color sensation of contemporary consuming society. It's face is any face used through mass media and a character and are a smile and an anonymous existences of consuming society. As it lies in side face as well as frontal face, an observer tries to search necessary position that examines whole facial figure. ● This luxurious and strong colors associates seductive colors of consuming society, while this is extractions from containing colors of an artificial merchandize design and a make-up. A steady pattern or stripes(color lines) encroaches a whole face like a mask or a make-up. Therefore concrete an information or a look about the face is mostly covered. Though it is an used and immediate characters, it also appears as if it is squashed or suppressed owing to colors and stripes overlapped on that. This paradox shows that as color tastes of luxuriously a brilliant consuming society seems to promise a happiness and a comfort, they makes really a smile face to a vague and strange look. Batman and Cha, Du-ri, various star's face, and containing a smile figure painted on a camouflage pattern painted on car bonnet(hood) give to guess these paradox. ■ Park Young Taek
