상상정원Ⅰ Garden of the ImaginationⅠ

역사적으로, 상상력은 직접적인 인식으로부터 우리들을 바꾸어 놓을 능력으로 종종 표현되었다. 관찰되는 세상의 기본 요소들을 사용하면서 우리들의 상상력은 객관적인 세상의 속박을 벗어나게 하며 실체를 바꾸는 것을 허용케 해준다. 최현주 작가의 '상상의 정원'은 이런 활동을 정확하게 표현하고 있다. 그러나 화가가 표현한 정원의 실체는 무작위의 물체들이 단순히 뒤죽 박죽 되어 있는 것이 아니다. 그녀의 직관적인 치환, 맥락의 재해석, 그리고 매일 접하는 물건들의 크기 변환은 우리들에게 그 자체의 내적인 일관된 법칙을 통해 분명한 실체를 제공해줄 뿐만 아니라 종종 무시되거나 보이지 않는 불합리한 객관적인 세상의 측면을 중요한 요소로 제시하고 있다. 몇 가지 주제가 이번 전시회에 출품된 작가의 작품 속에 스며들어있다.

특히 주목할 것은 그녀의 정원에 초석이 되는 물체들을 고른 작가의 선택이다. 이 물건들은 외계세계에 있는 특별한 것이 전혀 아니며 일상적인 삶 속에 있는 것이지만 작가의 작품을 통해서 완전히 다른 물체로 변형된다. 브로콜리는 우주선과 재탄생의 기둥 , 배추는 자궁, 뱀은 관찰자, 흔하게 접할 수 있는 계란 프라이가 잎사귀에 활짝 핀 꽃송이로 피어나는 것 등 자연적인 과정들이 다시 정의되고 바뀌는 것을 보게 된다. 평범과 환상 사이를 경계 없이 넘나들 수 있는 최현주 작가의 능력은 마법적 사실주의의 기본적인 직관력을 취하고 있으며 새로운 관점으로 사물을 바라 볼 수 있게 하는 전환점이 되게 한다. 마법적인 사실주의에서는 독자들이 환상적인 요소가 스며든 실체를 보게 되는 반면 작가의 정원에서 독자들은 실체가 스며든 환상을 맛보게 된다. Historically, the imagination is often characterized as our ability to displace ourselves from direct perception. While using the basic building blocks of the observed world, our imagination allows us to shed the shackles of the objective world and reconfigure reality. Hyun-Joo Choi's exhibition, GardenoftheImaginationengagesinpreciselythisactivity. The reality of Choi's garden, however, is not simply a haphazard mishmash of random objects. Her intuitive displacement, recontextualization and resizing of ordinary everyday objects not only presents us with a distinct reality with its own internally consistent set of rules, but also serves to highlight aspects of our objective world that are often ignored, unseen, or themselves absurd. Several themes permeate Choi's work in this exhibition. Of particular note is Choi's selection of objects that form the building blocks for her garden. These objects are by no means extraordinary within the world of external, everyday life, but are transformed into something completely different through Choi's work. Broccoli heads become spaceships and pillars of rebirth, a head of bok choy becomes a womb and snakes become pervasive observers. Furthermore, we also see natural processes being redefined and reconfigured, as is the case with cooked eggs blooming from different foliage. Choi's ability to maintain this seamless transition from ordinary to fantastical takes the basic intuition of magical realism and turns it around. Whereas in magical realism we see reality infused with the fantastical, Choi's garden infuses that fantastical with reality. ■ Nathan Knispel (번역_조해이)
