무수한 점들이 만들어낸 빛의 흐름 ● 빛은 공기나 바람, 구름처럼 인간의 삶에 있어 중요한 요소이지만 그 실체가 어떠한지 정확히 표현하기는 어렵다. 이러한 에너지로서의 빛은 '바다의 빛', '쓸쓸한 빛', '빛을 주었다'의 말에서 알 수 있듯 빛깔이나 어떤 분위기, 희망 따위를 비유하는 다의어이기도 하다. 일상생활 속에서 작업의 소재를 찾아왔던 유지연은 주변을 무심히 보다 문득 형광등을 통해 새어 나오는 빛에 관심을 갖게 되었다. 이후 작가는 일반적인 의미로 통용되는, 즉 사물을 밝게 비추는 빛을 형상화한 작품들을 제작하였고 이번 전시를 통해 그 결과물을 보여주려고 한다. 무엇보다 작가는 스위치를 켜는 순간 주변을 환히 비추며 퍼져 나가는 빛의 이동에 주목하고 있다. 그리고 답답한 현실에서 벗어나 이상세계로 이동하고 싶은 자신의 바람을 끊임없이 움직이는 빛에 투영시키고자 한다. 작가는 어디로든 발산될 수 있는 빛이라는 에너지에 감정을 이입하여 이를 작품으로 표현하고자 한 것이다.

지난 전시에서 선보였던 물을 주제로 한 작품들의 핵심어가 '표출'이었다면 이번에 전시되는 작품들의 키워드는 '흐름'이다. 수많은 선들이 덧붙여져 날카로운 느낌을 전달했던 물의 표출과는 대조적으로 빛의 흐름은 무수한 점들이 모여 면의 형태로 표현되었다. 그리고 자세히 보면 이 점들이 다음과 같은 색을 띤다는 것도 발견할 수 있다. 작가는 빛의 삼원색인 빨강, 초록, 파랑과 이 세 가지 색을 합성할 경우 나오는 노랑, 다홍색, 흰색을 이용하여 점을 찍는 작업을 했는데 이는 흰색으로 보이는 빛에 다양한 색이 숨어 있다는 사실을 말하고자 한 것이다. 이처럼 순색의 작은 색점들로 완성된 유지연의 작품 중에 특히 「ㅎㅇㅈㄷ」는 밝은 색의 수많은 점들로 구성되어 있어 반짝이는 광채를 강하게 전달한다. 반대로 「ㅇㅇㅎㄱ」, 「ㅍㅈㄷ」에서처럼 점의 밀도가 크지 않을 경우에는 유유히 흐르는 빛이 실제 존재하는 것처럼 보이기도 한다.

한편 유지연의 작품에서는 빛이 발원지가 무엇인지를 부연 설명하는 요소가 각기 다른 형태로 등장한다. 양초, 형광등, 가로등, 전기스탠드 등은 사실적으로 묘사되어 있는데 점과 대비되는 선으로 그려져 있어 그 형체가 더욱 뚜렷하게 인식된다. 무엇보다 유지연의 이번 근작들은 관람자의 다양한 상상력을 자극하는 요소들로 가득 차 있는데 이는 다음과 같은 두 가지로 설명할 수 있다. 먼저 작가는 각각의 작품에서 연상되는 느낌을 형용사나 부사로 표현한 후에 「ㅅㄹㅈㄷ」, 「ㅃㅈㄴㅇㄷ」, 「ㅂㅊㄷ」와 같이 자음만을 남겨 제목을 만든다. 그리고 관람자들이 마치 퍼즐 놀이를 하듯 생략된 말을 추측할 수 있기를 기대한다. 그들이 작품을 통해 받은 인상은 각기 다를 수 있으므로 다양한 단어들이 발화되는 것이 가능하다. 또한 화면 전체를 부유하는 무수한 점들을 마주한 관람자들은 화면 바깥의 공간으로도 빛/점이 확장될 수 있음을 상상해보게 된다. 끊임없이 움직이는 빛과 같이 자유롭기를 원했던 작가의 생각을 공유하는 관람자들과 마찬가지로 그녀가 자신의 감정을 이입하게 될 또 다른 대상이 무엇이 될지 사뭇 궁금해진다. ■ 이윤진

Flow of light formed with countless dots ● Light is such an important elements in our lives like air, wind or cloud but it's not easy to tell what the light really is. Light, as a kind of energy, has several meanings as we can recognize its usage like 'light of sea' in here, light describes color, and 'sad light' meaning an atmosphere, and 'give light' meaning hope. The artist Yoo Ji Yeon who has been interested in finding materials for work in daily lives, happened to have an interest in light come from fluorescent light. Since then, she created art works as a figuration of light popularly known as a material flashing objects and this exhibition is the place to show the results. The artist specifically focused on the movement of light spreading into the space while flashing the space at the moment of clicking a switch. Also she wants to reflect her desire to freely move to ideal world from harsh reality into continuously moving light The artist put her mind into sort of energy, called light freely released to everywhere and present it as art work. ● The key word of art works inspired by water in former exhibition was 'expression'. And This exhibition's main theme of art works is 'flow'. There is a clear difference between two themes. Expression of water is expressed as sharpness made by lots of lines but flow of light is expressed as dimension made by lots of dots. And when you take a closer look, you notice that every single dot has a different color. She created dots with yellow, scarlet, and white which are made from composition of the three primary color of light, red, green and blue. That's because she wanted to tell there are various colors hidden inside light which looks white. Out of her works made with lots of colored dots, the 「ㅎㅇㅈㄷ」 strongly deliver sparkling glare thanks to lots of bright colored dots in it. On the other hand, 「ㅇㅇㅎㄱ」, 「ㅍㅈㄷ」 filled with relatively small sized dots so it looks like slowly flowing light. ● In her art works, factors explaining what are the source of light is realistically expressed with a various forms such as candle, fluorescent light, streetlight and desk lamp. Those are drawn with lines so their shape is very much clearer compared with dots. Above all things, her works are full of elements stimulating viewer's various imaginations. And those elements can be explained in two things. First, She express feeling associated with each works by using adjective or adverb and eliminate vowels from those words and remains only consonants like this, 「ㅅㄹㅈㄷ」, 「ㅃㅈㄴㅇㄷ」, 「ㅂㅊㄷ」. Then she expects viewer to guess what the missing vowels are like solving picture puzzles. Each viewer can have different impression from works which means there are lots of possibilities when it comes to translate hidden messages. Also viewers watching lots of dots floating on the canvas can imagine those light and dots spreading to the outside space. I wonder what the artist will find a material that she empathizes with like viewers who share the feeling of the artist who want to be free as a continuously moving light. ■ Lee Younjin
