Two Faces

두산갤러리 뉴욕에서는 5월 5일부터 6월 4일까지 민성식의 개인전 Two Faces 를 개최한다. 이번 전시에서는 작품의 제작과정을 엿볼 수 있는 드로잉을 포함한 그의 신작 회화작품과 설치작품을 선보일 예정이다.

민성식은 선명한 색채로 익숙한 자연과 도시공간을 화면 속에서 대담하게 분할하고 미묘한 시점변화를 통해 상상력을 자극하는 초현실적인 분위기의 회화작품들을 선보여 왔었다. 이번 전시에서는 작가가 어린 시절 나무토막으로 만들어 가지고 놀던 장난감 총들이 모티브가 된 작품들이 전시된다.

나무로 만든 장난감 총은 유년기의 놀이의 대상이었지만, 이는 사회 속에서 무의식적으로 학습된 인간의 폭력성을 상징적으로 보여주고 있는 것이다. 작가는 무기라는 것이 인간의 삶의 양면성을 극단적으로 보여주고 있음을 장난감 총이라는 가벼운 소재를 통해 단순화시켜 보여준다. 자칫 무거워 질 수 있는 주제를 작가 특유의 유쾌한 시각과 절제된 표현방식으로 그 이중적 의미를 부각시키며 은유적으로 관객에게 암시하고 있다.

민성식 (1972~)은 한남대학교 회화과에서 학사와 석사를 마쳤다. 갤러리 현대 (2010, 서울), 닥터 박 갤러리 (2007, 양평), 두아트 갤러리 (2006, 서울) 등에서 개인전 및 대안공간 루프 (2008, 서울), 인사아트센터 (2007, 서울), 한가람 미술관 (2006, 서울), 대전 시립미술관 (2006, 대전) 등 다수의 단체전에 참여하였다. 현재 대전에서 거주 및 작품활동 중이다. ■ 두산갤러리 뉴욕

DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to announce Two Faces, the US debut exhibition of Korean-born artist Songsik Min. In this exhibition, Min shows his newest acrylic paintings and an installation that reflects his creative studio process. The installation includes numerous drawings and models. ● Min sees the world as a simple color palette and arrangement. He is known for creating paintings of surreal spaces using vivid colors and bold divisions of familiar scenes or objects. In this exhibition, he maintains the sense of isolation while his heavy and difficult subjects are touched upon rather playful manner. The motif, toy guns, starts with his nostalgic recollection of childhood, during which he used to make and play with wooden toy guns. He deals with various aspects of life using a metaphor that involves the collision of two polar opposites: violence and protection. As the title suggests, Min captures the duplicity of violence using simplified toy gun imagery and allows viewers to observe the symbolic connotation behind toy guns. Although it is daunting to think that such benign objects trained us to exhibit human cruelty from the early stages of our lives, Min has discreetly taken these toy guns out from the social context and placed them in the seemingly innocent world of childhood. ● Songsik Min was born in 1972 in Daejeon, Korea. He received his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from Hannam University in Daejeon, Korea. He has had solo exhibitions at Gallery Hyundai (2010, Seoul, Korea), and doART Gallery (2006, Seoul, Korea). He has been included in exhibitions at alternative space LOOP (2008, Seoul, Korea); Deajeon Museum of Art (2006, Daejeon, Korea). He lives and works in Seoul, Korea.
