메시지 & 이미지, 그리고 나눔 ● 지난 해 가을 학교 인성교양학부에서 "故 이태석 신부님의 삶과 사랑"이라는 특강이 있었다. 강사는 수단 어린이 장학회 이사장으로 "여태껏 저는 예수님이 보이신 빵의 기적을 상식적으로 납득하기가 어려웠습니다. 그런데 한국의 사제 한 분이 가난하고 무지한 땅 톤즈에서 5천명을 먹이는 것을 목격하게 되었어요. 아마 5만 명이라 해도 과언이 아닙니다. 이태석 신부님이라는 빵 하나가 앞으로 5백만 명은 족히 먹일 것이라고 생각합니다."라고 했다. 그리고 현지에서 이신부님의 헌신적인 사랑을 지켜보는 동안 자신의 삶 또한 먹구름 속에서 희망을 보게 되었다는 소회의 말도 덧붙였다. 그 후 나는 다큐멘터리 『울지마 톤즈』와 책과 그 분의 자작곡인 노래 「묵상」등을 듣게 되면서 자연스럽게 이번 전시회를 기획하게 되었다.

일요일 아침 카메라를 들고 갤러리 직원과 함께 KTX를 탔다. 전시회 진행을 위해 부천에 있는 작가 작업실을 방문하기 위해서다. 화가 강성원씨는 평소 종교적 세계관을 바탕으로 원죄, 종교적 위선, 현대물질 문명을 비판하는 작업에 전념해 왔다. 그러나 그의 그림은 경직된 교도적 관념에 따르지 않고 언제나 독자적인 해석을 견지하며 한국 신표현주의 회화의 선두 주자로서의 기량을 마음껏 펼치고 보여준다. 작가는 감상자들에게 미적 쾌감 보다는 고통의 충격을 가함으로서, 표피적인 일상과 현실을 꿰뚫고, 우리의 정신을 무의식의 깊은 심연으로 이끌고 들어가서 내동댕이치곤 했었다. 그런데 이제 화가는 그 고뇌의 옷을 벗고 이태석 신부님이라는 희망의 빛을 우리 사회에 보여주고 싶은 것일까? 강성원 그림 속의 이신부님은 어떤 모습일지 궁금증을 누르며 작가 작업실에 도착하니 200호, 150호 크기의 대형 작품이 기다리고 있다. 추상과 구상, 흰 색과 검은색, 삶과 죽음이 서로 뒤엉킨 우울한 배경이 상처를 치유하고 또 세례를 주는 신부님의 푸른 옷자락을 사정없이 끌어당기는 대형 그림 2점이, 작업실 정면에 놓여있는 것이 보인다. 화가는 고 이태석 신부님의 실천적인 신앙과 헌신의 삶을 표현하고 있지만, 그와 동시에, 주님께서 살아 계시다면 왜 굶주림에 시달리고, 피 흘리고, 병들어 고통 속에 죽어가는 이 가여운 사람들을 보고만 계시냐고 눈물 흘리는 신부님의 모습 또한 떠올렸을 것이다. 차 한 잔을 앞에 놓고 작품에 대하여 화가와 이것저것 대화를 나누었지만, 그림 스스로가 우리에게 모든 것을 보여주리라고 생각한다. 돌아올 시간이 되어 화실을 나올 때 화가가 말했다. "신부님이 보이신 나눔의 참된 가치와 의미에 깊이 동조합니다. 보물단지처럼 창고 안에 끌어안고만 있는 내 그림들도 장차 나눔을 위한 도구가 되면 좋겠습니다." ■ 백미혜

Massage & Image, Sharing ● Last year, during the winter in the Institute of Humanities Education there was a special lecture titled "Father Tae-Suk Lee's Life and Love." The guest speaker was the chief director for Sudan youth learning who said: "Until recently I found it hard to understand rationally about the miracle of the Bread Jesus has given us. However, one priest from Korea, Father Lee, gave witness to feed the 5,000 people in poor, illiterate Sudan. Maybe it is not too much to continually feed even 5,000,000 people―let alone 50,000 people―with a piece of bread." And, while Father Lee's self-sacrificial love was sticking to that very spot in the Sudan, his cherished words became hope for their own lives and fought against the dark clouds. After that, and after the documentary 『Dont Cry Me Sudan』, and after the book, and after listening to the song "Contemplation," written and composed by the late Father Lee, I naturally made a plan to host this exhibition. ● On a Sunday morning, I grabbed a camera and rode with a gallery employee on the KTX to visit the Bucheon office where work on the exhibition was underway. Sung-Won Kang usually came to the office and often, with a religious world view, seriously criticized current product greed, religious hypocrisy, and Original Sin. However, his art didn't follow a stiff moral ideal, but usually stuck to self-criticism. Sung-Won Kang personally spread his artistic skills so as to show Korean New Expressionism to the public. He helped the viewer see a pleasant aesthetic feeling by piercing reality and superficial, mundane life with a strong impact on suffering. He guided our souls through the abyss of the unconsciousness and he then threw them away at random. But, these days, Sung-Won Kang takes off the clothes of agony, for he wants to wear the clothes of light, lit by Father Lee―the light of hope. I was wondering what images of Father Lee Sung-Won Kang had drawn. And, when the gallery employee and I arrived at the office, there, the two great works of art were waiting for us: one with the priest feeding the hungry, and another giving Baptisms with his blue priest train. The backdrop was a sadness where abstractness and concreteness, black and white, life and death all became entangled. It seemed to me that Sung-Won Kang was trying to express the dedicated life and religious attitude of Father Lee. Kang must have imagined the agony of the Father shedding tears who wanted to ask the Lord why He is abandoning the people who are starving, bleeding, and dying with the ravages of disease. We talked over a cup of coffee about the works and the artist. But, I thought the art would naturally show everything. While returning home, after I left the studio, Kang said, "I deeply share the real meaning and value the late Father Lee tried to share with us. The pictures I have in my warehouse are like treasures. I wish them to be used as tools for sharing in the future." ■ BAEKMIHYE
