보잘것없는 것들에 대한 의미 있는 초상 '언제나, 이미, 거기에(always-already-there)' ● 인간에 의해 존재하는, 인간의 필요에 의해 생산되고 소비 되는 인공적이고 임시적인 그리고 방치되고 버려진 자연(가령 공원의 무수한 마른 풀이나 인공적으로 심어진 화단의 꽃과 나무들)을 소재로, 우리의 세계 속에서 존재하는 자연의 몸을 가장 자연적인 재료인 목탄으로 그려내는 작업을 하고 있다. 그것은 자연이라고 이름 지어져 자연의 변화 속에서 간신히 그 생명과 형태를 유지하고 있으며, 난 이것이 마치 세계 속에서의 우리의 존재와 다를 게 없다고 본다. 나의 작품은 대상의 지각과 인식, 그리고 경험과 관계 맺음을 통해, '언제나, 이미, 거기에(always-already-there)' 존재하는 세계를 알아가는 여정이며 보잘것없는 것들에 대한 의미 있는 초상이다.

나의 작품 속에서 몸(the body)은 그 여정의 아주 중요한 표현 대상이자 매개체가 된다. 버려진 자연의 의인화를 통해 몸, 즉 세계 속에서 관계하는 몸을 스냅샷(snapshot)으로 연출해 작품 속에서 드러내고자 한다.

나에게 있어 이러한 탐구과정은 세계 속에서 경험하고 지각되는 우리의 모습을 임시적이고 소외된 자연을 통해 발견하는 것이다. 그럼으로 나는, 나와 타인 간의 관계와 경험을 통해 인식되는 세계를 그려나감으로써, 현존하는 세계 속에서의 우리의 모습을 발견하고 우리의 삶을 재조명 하고자 한다. ■ 배설희

A meaningful portrait for valueless things 'always-already-there' ● Vegetative nature which is produced, grown, consumed or abandoned by humans exists only through our needs and desires. I use charcoal, a plant-based natural material, to illustrate forms and shapes of this ephemeral body of the natural environment in an effort to reflect the state of our human experience. These pieces of vegetarian barely retain their lives and forms; I think this is no different from our being in the world. Through our perception and recognition, and our experiences and relationships, it is a journey to know the world which is 'always-already-there' yet is never fully realized. It is my attempt with my body of work to illustrate a meaningful portrait for valueless things. ● I try to reveal the human body and emotions as snap shots by using the body of abandoned nature like planted nameless flowerbeds, trees on the sidewalk, little flowers in the park, and numberless grasses. ● Futhermore, I'm looking to reflect our lives, This is attempted by exploring the relationship between me and the world through the faces of artificial and abandoned nature. I use body shapes and movement, which are concrete, as a means to express the diversity of the human experiences; however, reinterpreted to illustrate consciousness and existence in the natural world. ■ BAESEOLHEE
