그림자를 걸친 사람들 ● 박성태는 현상이 아니라 본질에 주목하는 예술가다. 그의 작품은 늘 표면과 이면의 대화라 할 수 있는데, 그가 지난 10여년 변함없이 쓰는 재료는 철망이다. 박성태가 지금까지 철망으로 만든 구멍 뚫린 존재는 빛을 받으면 검은 그림자로 이면을 드러냈다. 하지만 이번에 그는 철망의 구멍을 막고 흰색 페인트를 칠해 어떤 빛도 표면을 통과하지 못하게 했다. 그래서 작품들에는 단단한 외관만 남고 겹이 사라진 것 같지만 그렇지 않다. 예전 작업이 빛을 매개로 표면에 내재된 본질의 드러남과 사라짐을 보여주었다면, 이번 작업에서는 본질이 표면을 아예 덮어버린다. 인물이 걸친 천은 그림자의 변형이다. 표면으로만 된 작품이 오히려 거대한 不可視의 可視化라 할 수 있는 이유가 바로 이것이다. 천(그림자)은 표면의 의식을 질식시킬 정도로 우리를 짓누르기도 하고(땅에 발을 디딘, 머리가 없는 사람들), 날개처럼 우리를 고양시켜 날아오르게도 한다(공중에 걸린, 다리가 없는 사람들). 그리고 그런 두 집단을 이어주는 사람이 있다. 머리가 없지만 공중에 들려있는 그는 누가 봐도 십자가에 매달린 예수다. 그가 지상에서의 마지막 고통을 생생한 의식과 의지로 견디고 치러내면, 이제 다리는 필요 없다. 그때 그는 자신의 얼굴을 되찾아 하늘로 비상할 것이다. ■ 이윤옥

People who wear shadows ● Sungtae Park is an artist whose emphasis is in the essence rather than form or shape. His art is aimed at showing the connection between the visible side and a hidden side. He has been using only wire mesh for his work material for the last decade. Sungtae Park's work form shadows which emerge on the other side of the shapes from the light streaming through the wire mesh. However this time he has covered the shapes with white paint so that the light won't be able to penetrate at all. Making this work look like a thin, layerless surface; but it is not. His previous work looked through the surface, in to the very essence of the shape, disappearing, but this time the essence is in the covering of the surface. The figure is wearing the fabric which is a transformation of its shadow. The fabric surface is how his work is transformed from can-not-see into can-see. The fabric (the shadow) engulfs us suffocating our senses of the surface(standing on the ground, the headless figures), and like wings boost us to fly (hanging in the air, the legless figures). There is a figure which connects the two groups; he has no head; hanging in the air; it is definitely Jesus to whoever sees it. He does not need legs; he would like to endure the last pain with lucidity it will be when he is soaring toward to sky for looking for the head. ■ LEEYOONOK
