32 Hours

이 전시는 자칭 "인터네셔날 우먼"이라 불리는 작가 수니 마코소브가 흥미로워 하는 문서인 "Art in the age of Biopolitics: From Artwork to Art documentation"을 실시간으로 번역하는 퍼포먼스이다. 이 문서는 몇 년 전 대학원에서 (Slade School of Fine Art)에서 그녀의 네덜란드 출신 선생님으로부터 받은 것이며, 그녀의 "꼭 읽어야 할 글" 목록에 저장되어 있었다. 원래 Boris Groys가 독일어로 쓴 후, 다른 작가에 의해 영어로 번역된 이 문서는 이제 수니 마코소브에 의해 또 다른 언어 즉, 그녀의 모국어인 한국어로 번역된다. 이 작업은 현재 사용 가능한 인터넷 번역 도구 또는 번역의 정치학의 (Politics of Translation) 이론적 의미를 넘어 그녀의 관심을 표명하고 있다. ● 작가는 이전에 수많은 텍스트를 영어에서 한국어로, 한국어에서 영어로 번역한 경험은 있지만, 그녀 자신을 전문 번역가라고 생각하지는 않는다. 이 전시는 이론적으로 응축된 문서를 그녀가 '얼마나 "성공적으로" 혹은 "정확하게" 한국어로 번역하느냐' 라는 데 목적이 있는 것이 아니라, 번역을 예술의 문맥에 맞게 구성하여 32시간 동안 투명한 실시간 퍼포먼스를 통하여 관객으로 하여금 번역이란 행위를 목격하게 하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 이 퍼포먼스의 결과물은 불확실하다. 번역이란 행위는 지적, 감정적 소모가 크며 복잡하고 불투명하며 때론 지루하다. 하지만 그 행위를 공공 영역에 배치한다는 사실은 작가에게 매우 흥미로운 일이 아닐 수 없다. ■ 벡터 스페이스

In this exhibition, the self-proclaimed "International Woman" Sunee Markosov will deliver a live performance of translating in real-time the article she's considered very interesting, "Art in the Age of Biopolitics: From Artwork to Art Documentation." This article has been on Sunee's "must read" list since it was handed out by her Dutch tutor, Klass Hoek at Slade School of Fine Art a couple years ago. Originally written in German by Boris Groys and then translated into English by another author, the article is now getting yet another interpretation by being translated from English to Sunee's native language, Korean. The idea holds interest to Sunee beyond the politics of translation or of the theoretical implications of the currently available Internet translation tools. ● While the artist has previously translated numerous texts from English to Korean and vice versa, she does not consider herself a professional translator. Whether she "successfully" or "accurately" translates this theoretically dense article into Korean is not the issue in this performance. Rather, for 32 hours, by framing the translation process into a transparent, real-time performance form, the artist invites the audience to witness her intellectual and emotional processes involved in the act of translation. The outcome of the performance maybe uncertain and yet the prospect of placing this demanding, complex, opaque, and at times tedious activity in front of the public is exciting to the artist. ■ vectorspace
