수니 마코소브의 작업은 급변하는 세계 속에서 인간의 정체성에 대해 고민하는 그녀의 개인적인 경험을 바탕으로 하고 있으며, 이는 서로 다른 문화가 만났을 때 발생하는 상호작용과 혼성성(Hybridity)에 연유하고 있다. 그녀의 관심사는 '사람이 원래의 "홈(Home)"에서 분리되어 유목민(Nomad)의 상태에 놓였을 때 그 사람의 정체성이 어떻게 변화되는지'에 관한 것이다. 그녀의 작업에는 "International Woman" 이라는 가상의 인물이 자주 등장한다. 이 인물은 특정한 지역 문화와 가치관에 구애 받지 않는 인물로 「A Tale of an International Woman (2005)」이란 작업에서 처음으로 등장하였다. 이 인물은 문화적으로 혼란스럽고 주관적이며 하이브리드한 그녀의 "또 다른 자아" (Alter Ego)로 발전되어 그녀의 노마드적 존재를 반영하게 된다. 하지만, 시간이 지남에 따라, 수니 마코소브는 그녀의 작업에 등장하는 "International Woman"과 그녀 자신을 구분 짓지 않고, 동일시하게 된다. 이번 전시 『The Chronicles of an International Woman』은 수니 마코소브가 그녀의 모국인 한국을 떠나 먼 인도에서 있었던 어린 시절 기억을 토대로 만든 것이다. 이 전시에는 그녀가 처음으로 경험한 외국으로서의 "인도"와의 만남뿐만 아니라 그녀가 경험한 수 많은 "첫 만남들(First Encounters)"에 관한 이야기를 담고 있다. 이를 통해 수니 마코소브는 '성장한다는 것', '소녀로써 꿈꾸고 상상한다는 것', 그리고, 그녀의 '계속되는 "홈 찾기"(Search for Home)' 에 대해 이야기를 하고, 또 질문을 한다. ■ 벡터 스페이스

Sunee Markosov's personal experiences drive her to explore the dimensions of human identity in the rapidly shrinking world, to examine the borderlines between cultures and the unusual interactions and hybrid mixes that occur on these borderlines. She is curious about what happens to one's identity when one is separated from the original "home" culture and is thrown into the state of a nomad. Sunee often employs a fictional character, the "International Woman", in her works. The character was first featured in the work "A Tale of an International Woman (2005)" to represent a nomadic character uncommitted to either location or ideas. This "alter ego" continued to develop into a culturally chaotic / subjective / hybrid character, reflecting the artist's own nomadic existence. Over time, Sunee grew to increasingly identify herself with the "International Woman." "The Chronicles of an International Woman" is based on the Sunee's childhood memories of her life in India, far away from her native Korea. This exhibition reflects both her first encounters with a "foreign" place, India, but also her "first encounters" with many other things. Through this exhibition, she questions the notions of growing up, of daydreaming as a young girl and of her ongoing search for a place of belonging. ■ Vector Space
