이번 전시작품 「다른 곳으로 가자!」에서의 에스컬레이터 위에 서있는 청년이미지는 인터넷에 떠도는 이미지를 활용한 회화 작품이다. 오늘날 현대사회는 청년층으로부터 모범이 될 만한 타자를 빼앗고 있다. 타인에게 무관심한 채 일상을 살아가며 기계적으로 하루하루를 살아가는 듯하지만 사실은 개체로 살아가는 그들의 공동체를 향한 열망을 표현하였다. ● 작품에서 에스컬레이터는 작품의 시작점으로서 작품의 내용을 결정한다. 내용을 위해 스타일을 사용하지만 역으로 스타일을 위해 내용을 사용하기도 한다. 형식은 내용과 긴밀하게 연결되어 있으며 오히려 융화되어 있다. 작품 제목 「눈높이를 높여라」는 이대통령의 청년층의 '눈높이' 발언에 관한 기사 제목 및 문장인 "눈높이를 낮춰라"를 바꿔서 적재적소의 차용개념으로 작품의 캡션에 넣었다. ● 그들은 청년층에 대한 '눈높이를 낮춰라' 발언으로 청년층들 에게 영향력을 미치고 싶어 하고 그리하여 청년 실업의 대한 청년층의 진보적인 비판을 회피 하고자 한다. 결국 청년실업의 관심에 대한 기여는 개인의 '눈높이' 문제가 아니라, 한국 사회가 안고 있는 구조적 문제점을 은폐하기 위함이다. 가난한 사람들이 부유한 친척에 기대를 거는 마음하고 부유한 사람들이 가난한 친척을 동정하자는 마음은 같지 않다. 그것은 처지가 다르기 때문이다. 청년층은 모든 사람들의 마음이 내 맘 같지 않지 않으니 스스로 젊음이라는 특권을 회복시켜야 하며, 자신의 가치를 높여야 하고 이미지를 개선시켜야한다. 이제부터 청년들을 포장하려 한다. 또한, 젊은 층은 권력층의 장단에 놀아나고 싶어 하지 않으며 그들이 만들어 놓은 '88만원세대'라는 꼬리표(기표)는 젊은 층에 대한 오해와 편견을 만들어 놓았고 피해를 가지고 왔다. 그들의 음계에 대한 젊은 층들의 자기방어는 필요하며 최선의 방어는 최대의 공격이라는 것을 말해주고 싶다. ● 그러나 동의할 수 없는 힘의 관계를 지지하지 않으면서 어떻게 힘들이 제 기능을 할 수 있게 하는가이다. 아마 한 가지 길은 바로 이러한 문제들을 작품에 편입시켜 거기에서 그것들을 폭로하는 것이다. 또한, 사회에서 개인사(個人史)로 이어서 주목하려 하며 젊은이의 심리적 양면가치와 사회의 모순을 내러티브 화하려 한다. 젊은 층은 아름답고 화려하지만 그것은 또한 기표로서 기능할 수 있다. 이처럼 무미건조한 에스컬레이터에서 재미와 게임의 요소가 있다. 풍경 속으로 융합시키는 것은 중요한 것을 살리는데 도움을 줄 수 있다. 맥락을 일종의 재료로 이용하기도 하고 소재에서는 좀 더 많은 복선이 깔려 있기도 하다. 특정한 미적선택과 사회비판적으로뿐만 아니라 미적으로도 이해 가능한 형식을 만들어내고 싶다. ■ 한윤희

The image of a young man standing on an escalator shown in 「Let's Go To Another Place!」was picked up from the internet. Today in our society, there is no role model for young generations. I tried to depict young people who seem to live one day after another mechanically without any interest in others but who in fact have passion for their community. ● The escalator is the starting point of the painting and defines the contents of the work. Style is used for content and contents are used for style too. Style and contents are interrelated and harmonized. 「Raise your sights」is included in the caption of the work as a parody of the title of the article about the president Lee's statement 'Lower your sights'. ● By the statement, he tried to affect young generations and avoid progressive criticism about the issue of unemployment among young people. The issue has nothing to do with the level of eyes and his statement is to cover up the systematic problem of Korean society. Expectation of poor people towards their rich relatives is different from sympathy of rich people towards their poor relatives. It is because of their different situations. Young people should take advantage of their privilege called youth and raise their own value and improve their images. They try to pack young people. But young people don't want to be controlled by authorities and they feel they are victimized by the authorities that put a signifiant of 'the generation of 880,000 won' on them, which created misunderstanding and bias against them. Self-defence is necessary for young people and I want to tell them the best defence is the best offence. ● But, how can we make power work without supporting mechanism of power? I think expressing the issue in painting is one of the ways to do it. And I try to depict social issue through a personal issue and to narrate a young person's psychological ambivalence and social contradiction. Young people are beautiful and brilliant but they may function as a signifiant too. Escalator is boring but there is some element of fun and game. Incorporating into a scene is effective for stressing the importance of something. Context is being used as material and objects have many underplots. I want to make particular aesthetical selection and social criticism and want to create a form which is aesthetically intelligible. ■ Yoonhee Han
