욕망의 조각 A piece of desire

나의 작업은 명승지를 관람하는 것으로부터 시작된다. 명승지는 이미 다수의 사람들에 의해 호감을 얻은 경치가 좋기로 소문난 곳이다. 그곳에서 소장가치가 좋은 어떤 장소 혹은 어떤 풍경을 사진으로 담아온다. 사진 속의 풍경은 실재하는 공간을 증명하는 동시에 매력적인 공간으로 묘사된다. 그리고 그 풍경 중 마음에 드는 특정장소, 또는 풍경의 특정 부위를 썰어온 다음 나의 공간 안에 들여 놓음으로써 수석으로 전락시킨다.

여기서의 수석은 무언가의 형상을 닮거나 혹은 좋은 풍경을 대치하기 위해서 찾는 조그만 돌맹이나 바위 덩어리를 의미하지 않는다. 이것은 보다 '공격적'이고 '능동적'인 행위의 개념을 내포하고 있다. "찾는 것"이 아니라 "썰어오는 것"을 의미하기 때문이다. 따라서 여기서 말하는 수석의 개념은 실제의 풍경을 썰어와 나의 공간에 들여놓음으로써 풍경의 오리지널리티와 소장가치의 개념을 충족시키는 것을 의미한다. 이 썰어온 풍경위에 나는 나의 욕구와 욕망의 순서를 순차적으로 배열한다.

"공격형 수석"은 전통적인 소유의 방법과 관조의 개념으로부터 확장된 소유의식과 관조, 그리고 놀이의 대상으로 증폭되면서 인간이 더욱 과감한 방법으로 자연을 대하는 태도의 전형을 보여주고 있으며, 인간과 자연의 이분법적 구도를 고스란히 드러낸다. ● 실재의 풍경을 썰어와 만들어 놓은 수석은 공적인 대상을 사적인 장소로 변화시키면서 수많은 내, 외적 욕구를 실현시키는 공간으로 존재하며, 이러한 과정들은 자연을 소유의 대상으로 전락시키면서 과도한 욕망, 이기심, 소유욕의 단면을 시사한다. 또한 무언가에게 항상 전지적 입장을 취하고 싶은 인간의 태도를 보여준다. ■ 이정배

My art works start by visiting the picturesque places. The picturesque places are where they are famous for their beautiful scenes and landscapes. Every time I find a spot which inspires me, I take pictures. The view in a piece of photo proves the existence of actual sites and at the same time, the picture itself has the charm to attract people as a fine art piece. Then I slice my favorite scene out of the photos and place them in my artificial space to degrade into Suseok (a small extracted rock piece which shows the beauty of mountains or huge rocks in its small size. They are often kept for ornamental reasons). ● Suseok above doesn't only mean a piece of small stone to be look like an object or to even replace nature. It's more aggressive and active concept for it's not "found", but "extracted (or sliced by intent)". Therefore Suseok, which mentioned above, means to keep the originality and value of the nature by literally slice pieces out of existing landscapes and put them in my private space. Above these cut scenes, I reveal my desire and arrange them in order. The "aggressive type of Suseok" contains the traditional meanings of possession and ornamentality, and, above that, it is now even considered as a subject of game. This introduces the new idea which is more resolute to face nature on the basis of dichotomy between human and nature. ● Suseoks in my space turn public places into private ones to materialize my numerous ideal values. Such process degrades the nature into the subject to own and reveals excessive greed, selfishness, and possessiveness as well as human's attitude that can't help to be omniscient. ■ LEEJEONGBAE
