Unfolded ● 'Unfolded'는 작품의 안과 밖을 휘돌며 2010년 개인전을 여는 저의 'as-is'를 가장 근거리에서 표현하는 테마입니다. ● 최근 수년 간 집중해 온 컴퓨터 설계를 통한 조형미의 탐구는 수십 장의 각진 철판을 정밀한 설계에 따른 레이저 절단 가공을 거쳐 장시간 시행착오를 통해 유선형의 입체를 완성하는 데까지 저를 이끌어 왔습니다.

이는, 본격적 작품 활동의 처음 무렵, 굵은 철사의 물성과 제작 과정 중의 감각적 상호작용을 통해 유기적 흐름의 미학을 추구하던 데서 나아가, 구조를 내 것으로 앞서 주도하고 싶은 작가로서의 욕심을 실현하기 위해 컴퓨터 그래픽을 기획과 계산의 도구로 활용하기 시작한 결과라는 생각이 듭니다.

이 지점에서 문득, 입체의 완전성으로부터 한 걸음 물러서는 여유가 필요하다고 생각했습니다. '實在'와 '素材'의 중간에서 느껴지는 긴장의 색다른 느낌을 찾아보고 싶었습니다. 입체를 면으로 분절하고 그를 평면으로 펼친(unfolded) 후 최소한의 객체들로 다시 입체를 구성하는 제작방식의 결과물인 2.5 차원의 입체는, 2차원에서 3차원으로, 미완에서 완성으로의 진행을 암시하는 매력을 준다는 생각이 들었기 때문입니다.

이러한 암시는 최근 부쩍 다음 단계로의 변화에 목말라하는 저의 상황과도 통해 있습니다. 구조를 통제하고 계산하는 데서 더 자유롭고 새로운 영역으로 전개되어(unfolded) 의미 있는 소통을 모색해 보고자 합니다. ● 이러한 과정의 한 조각으로 이번 전시를 자리매김 해 보려 합니다. ■ 이윤석

Unfolded ● 'Unfolded' is the theme of my solo exhibition of 2010. It expresses best my 'as-is' for the moment, the twining of the interior and the exterior of objects. ● In recent years, I have been exploring the use of computer-aided design in plastic arts, creating, through trials and errors, streamlined figures out of steel plates cut according to the precise measurement of computer design. ● This is a shift and a further development from my earlier works where I had used large steel wires to capture the esthetics of 'organic flow' through the sensuous interaction of the material and the production process. Going beyond mere 'capturing,' I have been wanting to assert myself as an artist and lead the artistic process by the use of computer as a design and production aid. ● While working on these objects displayed in this exhibit, I realized that I need to take a step back from the completed design and give expression to the artist's experience of the tension between the final outcome and the material of the object. So I 'unfold' solid objects into planes and, using a minimum number of components, reconstruct them into solids. The resulting 2.5 dimensional objects presented here suggest an on-going progress from 2 dimensions to 3 dimensions, from incompleteness to completeness. ● This suggestion is linked to my personal desire to progress to the next step; I want to be 'unfolded' further and move beyond control and calculation to a freer and more open and meaningful communication between the artist and the object. ● Presented here is but a snap shot of my still un-folding process of my artistic vision. ■ Lee Yoon-seok
