이진준의 『Your Stage』와 상상적 연기의 공간 ● 이진준은 최근 몇 년간 영상, 설치, 행위, 연극 등 다양한 매체들을 아우르는 작업과 독특한 작업주제로 주목 받아온 작가이다. 미술시장의 붐에 현혹되어 몇몇 오락적 특징들에 치중한 쇼윈도우용 스타일을 급조하고, 이것의 반복적 노출이 작가로서의 성공의 지름길이라고 믿는 최근의 많은 젊은 작가들과는 다르게, 이진준은 분명 그러한 세태로부터 거리를 취하면서 작가로서의 토대를 쌓는 일, 즉 자기 작업의 거시적 주제와 방법론의 토대를 확립하는 일에 전념해 왔다. 여기서는 이번 이진준의 전시작인 「Your Stage」(당신의 무대, 2009)에 대해서 간략한 논평을 하고자 하며, 이를 통해 아마도 그의 중심적 관심사의 한 단면을 엿 볼 수 있으리라 생각된다. ● 이 작품을 구성하는 기본 요소들은, 쇼나 연극의 무대를 연상시키는 현란하고도 몽상적인 조명, 거울로 채워져 무한히 복제, 확장되는 공간, 그리고 중심에 설치되어 마치 주인공의 공연을 위한 무대처럼 보이는 스테인레스 스틸 오브제, 이 3가지 요소이다. 이러한 요소들은 관객에게는 대략 다음과 같은 심리적 경험을 유도해 낸다고 생각된다. 무엇보다도 그것은 정신분석학적 의미에서의 꿈, 환상, 백일몽의 시각화라고 할 수 있다. 몽환적이고 비현실적인 공간은 마치 쇼윈도우처럼 대형 유리창을 통해 관객의 실제공간과 유리되고 있으며, 이는 작품 전체를 개인의 상상적이고 심리적인 무대로 만들어 낸다. 이것은 현실 속의 공간, 즉 주체와 타자들 간의 대화와 사회적 관계가 실행되는 공간이 아니라, 주체 혼자서 자신의 욕망을 투사하는 '환상(fantasy)의 공간'이다. 지그문트 프로이트는, 백일몽과 같은 환상을 '주체가 자신의 욕망이 멈춤 없이 연기를 지속하는 무대'로 정의한 바 있다. 특히 프로이트가, 꿈, 환상, 백일몽이 무대의 구조를 통해 보여지며, 주체는 이 무대에서 연기하는 자신의 모습을 바라보는 주인공 및 관객의 이중적 역할을 한다고 기술한 점은 잘 알려진 사실이다.

「Your Stage」는 중앙에 번쩍이는 무대(혹은 탁자)를 배치함으로써 관객으로 하여금, 바로 그러한 자신의 상상적 연기, 즉 주인공이면서 주인공으로서 보여지는 욕망의 연기를 수행하도록 유도한다. 이것은 결국 '주체의 욕망 충족을 위한 환상', 그리고 '그러한 욕망 충족의 불가능성' 이라는 모순된 상황으로 이루어지는 환상의 특징을 잘 드러내 준다. 그것은 더 나아가 우리 모두에게 잠재해 있는 나르시시즘적 정신병리에 관련된다. '자아'(ego)라는 것은 자신이 상상적으로 꾸며낸 시각적 언어적 이미지, 즉 이마고(imago)에 대한 끊임없는 집착이라는 점, 그리고 나르시시즘에 수반되는 주체의 고통은 바로 그러한 상상적으로 구축된 자기의 모습과 실제적 자기의 모습 간의 불일치, 그리고 이 불일치의 드러남으로 인한 고통이라는 점을 이 작품은 그 최면적 공간을 통해 경험하게 준다. 그렇지 않아도 이진준은 2007년 개인전 등을 통해 흥미로운 연극 퍼포먼스를 보여준 바 있다. 이를 통해 그는 연극적으로 구성된 자아, 자아의 분열 등의 문제를 탐구하였었다. 이러한 맥락 속에서 볼 때, 『Your Stage』는 관객에게 단지 최면적 빛과 공간이 자아내는 시각적 쾌락을 주기 위한 테마파크 같은 작품이 아니라, 바로 그러한 환상적 쾌락이 지닌 불가능성의 문제를 드러내고, 실제의 공간(즉 타자들과의 언어적 상징적 교환이 이루어지는 현실공간)과 환상적 공간 사이의 고통스런 간극을 드러내는 것이며, 관객은 바로 이러한 변증법을 경유한 후 자리를 뜨게 되는 것이다. ■ 김원방

Lee Jin Joon's 『Your Stage』 and Space of Imaginary Acting ● In a recent couple of years, Lee Jin Joon has been in the spotlight for works encompassing diverse mediums, such as image, installation, performance and theater and an unique theme. Here, I would like to make a brief comment on this exhibition work, 『Your Stage』(2009), which is believed to show the significant aspect of the grand theme and methodology which he currently desires to set up. ● The basic elements which constitutes the work are 3: light which is flamboyant and oneiric and which associates the stage of shows or theaters; space where endlessly reproduces and expands because of being full of mirrors and a stainless steel object which is installed in the center and is seen as if it is a stage for the performance of lead characters. I believe that those 3 elements could induce the psychological experiences of spectators; What is to be first mentioned more than anything else is a visualization of dream, fantasy and daydream in a psychoanalysis aspect. The oneiric and unreal space is deviated from the spectator's real space via a large glass window as it is a showcase, which creates the whole work as an individual's imaginary and psychological stage. This is not a space in reality, that is to say, the space which conversations and social relations are performed between a subject and the others but the space of the "fantasy which the subject projects his own desires by himself. Sigmund Freud means the fantasy like a daydream is a "stage in which a subject continues to do his acting with his desires ceased." Particularly, it is a well-known fact that Freud stated that dream, fantasy and daydream are shown through a stage structure and a subject plays a double role of both a lead character who sees his own appearance acting in the stage and a spectator. By placing a glaring stage(or a table) in the center, "Your Stage" induces a viewer to perform his/her imaginary acting, that is, the acting of a desire which is a lead character and is also shown as a lead character. This reveals the features of a fantasy which leads to a contradictory situation of " fantasy of for meeting the desires of a subject" and "the impossibility for meeting such desires." Further, it is related to the psychopathology of narcissism which is latent in us all. In the hypnotic space, the work shows that "ego" is a visual and verbal image which a one fabricated imaginarily, that is, an endless cohesion to an imago and the pain of a subject accompanied by narcissism is an inconsistency between the subject's appearance built in such a imaginary way and the real appearance and an agony caused by the revelation of such an inconsistency. ● That said, Lee Jin Joon showed a exciting theater performance through his solo exhibition in 2007. In the performance, he explored into the issues such as ego which was constructed in a theatrical way and the fission of an ego. In this context, "Your Stage" is not just a themepark-like work which intends to give spectators a visual pleasure which a hypnotic light and space creates. The work reveals the issue of impossibility which such a fantastic pleasure bears and the painful gap between real space-the space which linguistic symbolic exchanges with the others are made and fantastic space. Spectators would go through such dialectic and then leave their seats. ■ KIM WONBANG
