Smells like Sasquatch

돌아오는 9월 12일부터 10월 8일까지 홍대 복합문화공간 Television12 Gallery에서 신창용 작가의 『Smells like Sasquatch』가 열린다. 영화와 게임에서 작품의 모티브를 얻는다는 회화작가 신창용은 종종 자기자신의 모습을 작품안에 투영시키고 그 자신이 다른 주인공들과의 관계를 맺으며 회화속 스토리를 진행시킨다. 유아기나 청년기때 남자라면 누구나 한번쯤 간절히 동경했을 TV속 초인, 혹은 대중스타들과 자기자신을 오버랩시켜 작품 속 절대강자이며 정의의 사도이고, 또 전지전능한 신으로 표현하는 것이다.

홈 비디오세대를 거쳐, 대중매체의 홍수로 넘쳐나는 속 현대사회에서 향수가 담겨있는 그의 마초적 캐릭터들과 그가 만들어내는 에피소드들은 독자들에게 동심과 로망을 되새겨준다. 그런 의미에서 신창용의 그림은 대중들이 다가가기에 어렵지가 않다. 그의 그림을 접할 때 대중들은 마치 하나의 재밌는 영화, 혹은 재밌는 게임타이틀을 접할때와 다름없는 흥분을 느낀다. 이번 『Smells like Sasquatch』展은 중국 베이징에서 막 돌아온 작가의 4번째 개인전으로 그의 한층 업그래이드된 스케일의 작품세계를 만날 수 있다. ■ 김민용

『Smells like Sasquatch』, Shin Chang Yong's solo exhibition, takes place at multi-culture space Television 12 Gallery, located at Hongdae, Korea, from September 12th October through 8th. Shin Chang Yong, a young Korean painter who claims that his motivation and inspiration are mostly derived from Hollywood action movies and video games, conveys his message through his art by portraying himself in his paintings and having that portrayal of himself build relationships with other characters. These characters are mostly television superheroes from the 80's and famous Asian kung-fu masters such as Bruce Lee and Wang Wu, characters that every man would have had admired in their early teen years. By reflecting and interacting his reality to his ideal fantasy, Shin Chang Yong establishes a surreal matrix, a utopia where the artist may control his appearance as an apostle of justice, an unbeatable force, or even an almighty god. Despite the modern generation that has grown up with the home video and is now experiencing mass mediacracy, the artist's 80's macho figures and episodes lead the audience to their childhood memories and romance. The immediate excitement that people feel from viewing Shin Chang Yong's paintings is not so different to that stemming from movies or games. In that regard, Shin Chang Yong's paintings are direct and easily approachable to people. Fresh off his return from Beijing, "Smells like Sasquatch," Shin Chang Yong's 4th solo exhibition in Seoul, is an opportunity for people to see the improvement in the grandeur of his work. ■ kim, min yong
