일상의 즐거움을 강렬한 색채와 단순화된 형태로 표현한 퍼니퍼니 연작의 두 번째 발표이다. '지리산 연작'이 어두운 현실을 반영한 작업이라면, '퍼니퍼니 연작'은 현실과는 거리를 두고, 삶의 긍정적인 측면만을 노래한다. 따라서 색채는 극도로 화려해지고, 형태는 단순해지며, 대신 대상 하나하나를 평면에서 파 들어가 얇게 입체감을 표현한 이집트의 부조(조각)에서처럼, 평면회화작업에 붓으로 부조 같은 입체감을 부여 하였다. ● 한(恨)을 안고 자주 다녔던 지리산의 능선에 흐드러지게 피어있는 야생화들... 지리산의 야생화들은 유달리 색깔이 강렬하다. 파르티잔들의 흘린 피가 너무 많아서일까? 그 피를 먹고 자란 때문일까? 아니면 나의 감정이입 탓일까? ● 아무튼, 이런 지리산의 정돈되어 있지 않고 어지러이 흩어져 있는 야생화의 자태를, 강렬한 색채와 단순화된 형태, 그리고 이집트 조각(릴리프)을 원용한 독특한 입체표현 방법으로 묘사하였다.

퍼니퍼니 연작의 작업 연장선상에서 지리산의 야생화들을 그려보고자 했던 의도는, 지난번 개인전 때 같은 장소에서 동시에 '지리산연작'과 '퍼니퍼니 연작'을 각각 비교해 볼 수 있게 전시한 경우와 관련 되어 있다. ● 말하자면, 남한에서 가장 이념대립이 첨예하게 이루어 졌던 장소인, 지리산을 오르내리며 지리산연작을 구상 하였다면, 그 지리산 자락의 언저리에 다소곳이 피어있는 가녀린 야생화를 현란한 색채로 즐겁게 표현 한 '퍼니퍼니 연작'은, 서로 표현의 대척점에 있는 작업을 같은 장소에서 끌어낸다고 하는 즐거움이 있다. ● 내 영혼이 머물러 있는 지리산 골짜기의 한 너럭바위도, 그것을 어두운 현실에 비추어 볼 수도 있고, 생의 긍정적 측면에서도 바라볼 수도 있는 것이다. 하여, 누가 내 작품의 정체성에 대해 물어오면, '내 속에 두 남자가 있다'고 말하곤 한다. 표현에 있어서 단순화된 형태와 강렬한 색채로 인한 도식적인 느낌이 되지 않도록 많은 신경을 썼지만, 회화적 느낌의 결여에서 오는 상실감 보다는, 표현의 독창성을 얻었다는 득이 더 많아 만족한다.

지리산 산행 중에 등산로 가의 풀 섶 한 곳을 유심히 관찰해 보면, 참으로 많은 생명체들이 어우러져 살고 있음을 보게 된다. 이 생명체들은 자연의 순환원리에 따라 조용히 생성과 소멸을 반복한다. 인간도 예외일 수는 없다. 따라서, 작은 동물들, 곤충, 식물들이 언뜻언뜻 보이는 장엄한 지리산과 어울려서 하나의 장엄한 생태적 파노라마를 연출 하도록 의도 하였다. ● '퍼니퍼니1'이 형태를 지나치게 단순화 하였다면, '퍼니퍼니2'에서는 좀 더 친절한 묘사를 하였다. 이는 다양한 야생화와 생명체들의 생태적 특징이 어느 정도 드러나게 하기 위함이다. 색상도 더욱 강렬한 원색을 썼다. 특히, 그림으로부터 삶의 긍정적 에너지가 넘쳐나도록 배려하였다. ■ 공기평

FunnyFunny 2 - 'Little Buddies of Mt. Jiri' ● It is the second of FunnyFunny series to present daily pleasure in vivid colors and simplistic forms. While Mt. Jiri series show the dark side of reality, FunnyFunny series keep distance from actuality and express only the positive side of life. Thus, I applied colors in an extremely splendid way whereas I simplified forms. To make my works feel like Egyptian relief, which was carved slightly on each object surface, I represented 3-dimension on plane paintings with brush. ● Being heart-broken, I've climbed Mt. Jiri many times. Then I saw lots of fascinating field flowers along its ridgeline. The flowers in Mt. Jiri seemed to have stronger colors than those in other mountains. Was it because partisans shed too much blood in there and the roots of the flowers absorbed it to grow from? Or Was it only because of my personal empathy? ● Anyway, I described field flowers scattered in Mt. Jjri in intense colors and simple forms. And I utilized a peculiar 3-D expressive method which was borrowed from Egyptian relief way. The intention to adopt the wild flowers of Mt. Jiri as the object for this series was related with the purpose of last solo exhibition to let Mt. Jiri series and FunnyFunny series compared in one place at the same time respectively. ● I got an idea about Mt. Jiri series climbing the mountain where people confronted with each other in ideology most acutely in South Korea. On the other hand, this time I painted the wild flowers of Mt. Jiri, which were quietly in blossom, in a colorful and joyous way. Therefore it was very interesting to draw the contrastive works from the same area. ● So a lone broad and flat rock of Mt. Jiri, where my soul was deeply touched, can be analyzed in a dark view of reality view or be seen in a positive point of life. Therefore, when asked about the identity of my paintings, I often say, 'there are two men inside me,' I tried to restrain schematic sense coming from strong colors and plain forms. I am satisfied with the creation of expressive originality rather than feel the loss from the lack of pictorial effect. ● As I observed one spot among a bush during climbing Mt. Jiri, I found so many creatures living harmoniously with others. The living things were repeating birth and death following natural circulation. Human beings are not exception. I applied little animals, bugs, and plants to be well-matched with magnificent Mt. Jiri in the background to produce a majestically ecological panorama of paintings. ● The works of FunnyFunny 1 were oversimplified whereas the paintings of FunnyFunny 2 were descried more in detail. It can help the biological features of various flowers and other lives to be easily shown. I used more vivid colors than before.
