제작의 변 ● 퍼니퍼니 연작의 첫 전시 프롤로그를 쓰려고 하는데, 전직 대통령의 투신자살 소식이 들린다. 세상은 요동치는데 나는 '세상이 즐거워 죽겠다'는 퍼니퍼니 연작을 시작한다. 나의 「지리산 연작」이 무거운 현실의 문제를 다루었다면, 퍼니퍼니 연작은 세상살이의 밝은 면만을 보고, 밝고 경쾌한 색체로 일상의 즐거움을 표현한 것이다.

말하자면, 지리산 연작이 현실 참여이고 음지라면, 퍼니퍼니 연작은 현실도피이고 양지만을 바라본 것이라 설명할 수 있다. 이러한 방향성의 문제는 치킬박사와 하이디처럼 항상 작가들에게 선택을 강요하곤 했는데, 나는 이 두 가지를 모두 수용하기로 했다. 이는 그때그때 선택의 문제일 뿐, 작가의 정체성과는 아무 상관도 없는 것이다.

처음에는 부조(릴리프)에 채색을 하려고 했으나, 회화의 문제는 회화로 풀어야 한다는 평소의 지론을 따르기로 하여, 평면에 부조의 효과가 나도록 입체적으로 표현하였다. 이는 삼차원의 공간에 놓여있는 대상을 이차원의 평면에 옮긴다고 하는 회화의 본질을 훼손하지 않으면서 조각의 요소를 도입 했다고 할 수 있다. 물론 실제 부조를 제작하여 작품에 이용을 한 것이 아니라서, 논란의 여지는 있지만 나는 그렇게 주장하고 싶다. 새로운 시각언어로 말하고자 노력한 것이다.

여러 형태의 부조 중에서, 고대 이집트 부조의 영향을 받았다. 평면에서 얇게 파 들어가 입체를 만드는, 고대 이집트 부조처럼 보이도록, 입체감 있게 표현되어 있다. 또한 즐거운 일상의 모습을 스냅사진처럼 가볍게 표현하기 위해, 대상을 극히 단순화하고 밝고 경쾌한 색채를 썼다.

내용은 일상에서 느끼는 즐거움을 가벼운 터치로 표현 하였다.현대의 작가들이 다루고 싶어 하는, 극히 개인적이고 즉흥적인 즐거운 감정을 중시하여, 일상의 모습을 유쾌하게 표현 한 것이다. 작품을 보고 누구든지 즉각적으로 내용이나 의도를 알 수 있도록 하였으며, 아울러 인간에 대한 애정과 성찰, 배려, 존중 등이 우러나는 작품이 되도록 하였다. 진지함과는 다소 거리가 있지만, 긍정을 통한 긍정으로 삶에 긍정의 에너지를 느낄 수 있도록 의도하였다. ■ 공기평

Prologue ● At the moment of writing the prologue of the first exhibition of 'FunnyFunny' series, I heard the news about former President's suicide. In disturbed times, I'm starting 'FunnyFunny' series, which mean 'life is so much fun'. ● While 'Mt. Jiri' series deal with problems of reality, 'FunnyFunny' series see only bright side of living and express delight of daily life in light and cheerful colors. 'Mt. Jiri' series can be called shade and participation of actuality. On the contrary, 'FunnyFunny' series are light and escapism, looking at just positive side. ● Artists always feel pressed to choose their inclinations between Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde. I decided to take in the both. It is the matter of choice at each moment and doesn't have no relation with the artist's own identity. ● At first, I thought of painting on relief surface. However, I followed my cherished view after all, which means you should solve painting problems only by painting. I painted so that the plane could have tree-dimensional effect. ● Not damaging the essence of paintings, which is to represent real 3-D objects in the plane, but I also applied elements of carving. Sculptures were neither produced nor used in works so there is room for controversy. But still I'd like to say that I adopted from embossed carving. It is the trial of telling in a new visual language. ● Among various kinds of sculptures, I was influenced by ancient Egyptian carvings. To make my pictures resemble Egyptian relief carved slightly on the surface, I expressed three-dimensionally. In addition, to present buoyant life in casual ways like snap shots, I simplified objects and employed bright and light colors. ● The contents of 'FunnyFunny' series present daily pleasure by light painting touch. As one of modern artists' favorite themes, ordinary happenings with personal and instant joyous feelings are described in cheerful ways. ● Anyone could easily understand the contents and my intentions at first sight. Besides, they could also feel love, insight, consideration and respect toward human beings.
