Invisible Paradox

우리는 원본은 사라지고, 복제되고 재현된 것들을 진짜라고 착각하는 시뮬라시옹의 시대를 살아가고 있다. 지금도 세계 곳곳에서 일어나고 있는 전쟁이 그 대표적인 예가 될 것이다. 전장에 있지 않는 한 우리는 텔레비전이나 신문, 인터넷 등의 미디어를 통해 전쟁을 접할 수 밖에 없다. CNN 혹은 알자지라 방송을 통해 보는 아프간 전쟁은, 전쟁을 찍어 방송하는 사람들이 속한 사회의 입장과 힘을 고려할 수 밖에 없기 때문에 현실과 달리 재구성될 수 밖에 없다. 그리고 우리는 그들이 보여주는 이미지를 통해 상황을 받아들일 수 밖에 없고, 분쟁의 한가운데 살아가는 당사자들이 느끼는 불안이나 공포를 느끼기가 어렵다. 어쩌면 그런 감정들을 외면하고 그들로부터 우리의 삶을 분리시키고 있는 건지도 모른다. 전쟁의 부산물인 전투기나 전쟁 암호, 전함 등을 주로 그리는 작가 송현주에게도 전쟁은 이미 영화 같은 픽션일 뿐이다. 아니 그에게는 전쟁이 놀이 문화 정도로 가벼워졌다.

송현주는 사진병으로 복무하던 군 시절, 이라크 전쟁에 투입된 항공모함 "키티호크"를 보고 소스라치게 놀란 적이 있다. 그 규모와 당당함에 놀라 무아지경에 빠져들 정도였고, 그것은 비행기 프라모델 제작이나 RC 비행기를 조정하는 취미로 그리고 그의 작품세계로까지 연결되었다. 그 항공모함이 전쟁의 무기로 사용되어 많은 사람들을 희생시킬 것이 분명한데, 역설적이게도 작가에게는 경이로움의 존재, 기계문명 발달의 찬란한 산물 정도로 인식되었다. 사실 이것은 전쟁을 실재로 경험하지 못하고 매스미디어나 영화를 통해 전쟁을 접한 현대인들이 갖는 솔직한 이미지일지도 모른다. 그래서 그는 전투기나 폭탄 등을 어둡고 칙칙한 색이 아닌 화사하고 밝은 색깔로 처리했고, 바탕에는 비즈를 첨가해 화사하게 만들기도 했다. 전투기 뒤로 빈틈없이 들어차 있는 설계도면 같은 도형과 기호들은 이 전투 기계들의 복잡하지만 논리적이고 정확한 면을 자랑하는 것 같다. 또 프라모델의 오브제나 라인 테이프들을 그림에 붙여 프라모델 만드는 취미를 연장시키기도 했다. 전쟁 문명에 관한 이야기를 이렇게 표현한다는 것은 인도주의적 관점에서 볼 때 대단한 역설일 수도 있다. 그렇다고 전쟁의 아이러니가 전혀 반영되지 않은 것은 아니다. 그의 대표작 중 비행기의 실루엣을 조금씩 어긋나게 여러 겹 겹쳐 그린 것이 있다. 의도적으로 흔들어놓은 이 화면에는 정의는 힘에 의해 지배된다는 작가의 생각이 반영되어 있다. 살상무기들은 조금이라도 목표 위치를 잘못 조준하면 무고한 사람들이 대량으로 학살당할 수 있다. 생각만으로도 아찔한 이런 상황은 그의 흔들리는 그림 속에 고스란히 반영되었다.

최근 들어 작가는 가상의 전쟁 시나리오나 전쟁과 관련된 심리적인 이야기들을 작품 속으로 들여오기 시작했다. 존재하지 않는 새로운 장면을 만들고 싶기 때문이다. 실재로 있지 않았던 상황을 연출하여 마치 우리가 알고 있는 이미지인 것처럼 보여주는 것이다. 그래서 군사 작전을 위한 말표판의 이미지를 도입하여 작가가 만들어낸 가상의 전쟁 시나리오 그림에 담기도 하고, 전쟁 시뮬레이션 게임 같은 화면을 그리기도 한다. 또 군용기에 가문의 문양, 부대마크, 출격횟수를 나타내는 폭탄그림에서부터 핀업걸이나 애인의 이름, 미키 마우스 등을 그려 넣는 노즈아트에 착안해 에로틱하면서도 고전적인 여인을 그림에 등장시킴으로써 1,2 차 세계 대전 당시 참전했던 군인들의 심리를 이야기하기도 한다.

"이미지는 판타지이며 판타지의 설계는 나에게 창작의 카타르시스를 가져다 준다-송현주" 매스미디어나 영화를 통해 받아들여진 하나의 문명은 작가의 손에서 다시 새로운 판타지로 태어나게 됐다. 그의 그림을 통해 전쟁으로 대표되는 문명을 간접적으로 접한 사람들에게는 이것이 새롭게 보일 것이다. 우리가 익히 알고 있는 것과는 모순될지도 모르는… 그래서 그가 보여주는 이야기에는 인간의 한 문명에 대한 보이지 않는 역설이 숨어있는 것이다. ■ 장유정

We are living in the time of "simulation" which is misunderstood, copied and reproduced one instead real. When we indirectely meet a war that frequantely breaking out around the world, we can easy to experience this. Without standing in the battlefield, we can not help meeting situation through media like television, news paper and internet. For instance, when we received the news of Afghanistan War through CNN or Aljazeera those brodcasting stations basis on the standpoint and power of their society, we get images they give us. Therefore, we are difficult to feel terror of those people faced on the tragedy . We may turn away thier pain and seperate from our lives. Song Hyun Ju who mainly paint a fighter, battleship and passward of war recognize that a war is fiction like a movie. A concept of a war is lighten like a play level to him. ● When Song Hyun Ju served as photographer in the army, he marveled to see aircraft carrier named Kitty Hawk which was committed to the Iraq War. Since its fairly large size and a dignified appearance were beyond description, he had attained a spiritual state of perfect selflessness. This experience leaded him to make plastic model of aircraft, to play with a R.C airplane and even to make a picture. Though that warship will must be used by weapon killed lots of people, to him it was thought as marvelous thing and brilliant product of machine civilization paradoxically. Actually, it may be outspoken image for modern people who don't have any experience and receive a war through a mass media or movie. ● Under this background, he drew a fighting plane and bomb with not dark and gloomy color, but bright and splendid. He also stuck beads on the canvas to make brilliant. Blueprint-like a diagram which was densely drawn in the back of plane and sign seems to boast their logical and precise aspect. In addition, he extended his hobby of making a plastic model to painting through using an object of plastic and line tape. As a humanitarianism point, it is a considerable paradox that story of war civilization is expressed like this. ● However, it is hardly to say irony of war is not reflected in his painting. There are some things which draw a silhouette of plane with several crossed layer in his represent picture. His thought that justice is controlled by power was wholly reflected on the canvas shaken with intend. ● Recently, he begins to put imaginary scenario of war and psychological story related with war into his artworks. He would like to make new scenes do not exist in real. Producing imaginary situation, he would like to show some images which already seem to know. He introduced image of board for military operation and expressed scenario of a war. On the conception of the Nose Art, he draw from a family insignia, mark of unit or bomb to pinup girl, lovers name or Mickey Mouse on the military plane, he also put erotic and classical women on his painting in order to tell psychology of military personnel who participated in The First and Second World War. ● "Image is fantasy and design a fantasy gives me Catharsis of creation?Song Hyun Ju" One kind of civilization which received by mass media or movie was created new fantasy by artist. This scene will be shown a quite new one to those people whom indirectly experience a war. It may be conflict with our established idea. Therefore, invisible paradox about one human civilization is contained in the story shown by him. ■ Jang You Jung
