석탄풍경_Coal Mine Village 2009

기로에 선 近代 . 철암과 사북 사이 / Political Meaning of Landscape ; Modernity on the Edge / Between Cheoram and Sabuk 2004-2008 ● 카메라 배낭과 삼각대를 매고 철암과 사북을 틈틈이 드나든 지 5년째. 그동안 강원도의 탄광지인 철암과 사북에는 크고 작은 변화가 적잖게 일어났다. 철암에서 맞닥뜨린 잿빛 근대의 강렬한 포스와 그 잔상들이 안겨준 시각적 충격, 사북 카지노의 기묘한 광채, 바로 그 아래의 터에서 홀로나마 명맥을 이어가던 유서 깊은 동원탄좌가 드디어 막을 내릴 때 왠지 모르게 가슴 한 쪽으로 밀려들어오던 처연함... 그런저런 기억들을 아련하게 할 만큼 두 지역에 들어서는 새로운 스타일의 풍경은 근대기의 자취들을 하나 둘씩 영겁 속으로 밀어 넣고 있었다. 그리하여 사북은 근대의 선을 훌쩍 넘어 신천지를 열어젖혔고, 그나마 탄광촌의 원형이 그런대로 남아있던 철암도 어쩔 도리가 없이 변화의 풍파 앞에 자신의 몸을 내맡기며 그것의 끝 지점으로 서서히 옮겨가는 형국이다.

그러는 사이-행여나 놓칠 새라-그렇게 소거되거나 사라져가는 과거의 흔적들과 새로 생성되는 기호들을 좇아 엄정한 시각으로 셔터를 눌러댄 끝에 얻게 된 소중한 사진들. 거기에 담긴 시간성의 궤적들과 그런 징표들이 내포한 사회적 표상성. 잠시 그 중의 몇몇을 풀어 여기 석탄박물관에서 다시 선보이려한다. 무릇 사진은 존재의 현존보다 부재를 증거 할 때에 더욱 큰 힘을 발휘한다던가? 내가 확보한 것들 중에서 비록 일부의 양이긴 하나, 본 전시를 구성한 사진들이 나름대로 그런 역할을 톡톡히 수행함과 더불어 사람들의 기억을 환기시키고 의식을 자극하면서 그들의 가슴속으로 스며들어갈 수 있는 유용한 자료가 되기를 바란다.

전시를 대형컬러사진작품 26점으로 구성했다. 박물관 1층 로비와 휴게실에는 사북과 고한이미지(2004-2006) 21점으로 제작한 10작품을, 2층의 유물전시실과 회랑통로에는 철암이미지(2004-2008) 22점으로 제작한 16작품을 설치했다. 각 공간에 작품들을 조합하고 배치할 시에 그것들이 엮어낼 수 있는 상호적인 관계와 맥락을 중시했으며, 배열순서는 박물관이 조성한 관람객의 동선을 참조했다.■ 이강우

It has been five years since I began to travel to Cheoram and Sabuk with my camera bag and tripod on my shoulders. During that time, there have been many changes, large and small, in the two mining areas of Gangwon Province. The spectacular force of the ash-colored modern era and the visual shock I received from the powerful afterimages I experienced for the first time at Cheoram, the mysterious and paradoxical brilliance of the Sabuk Casino, and the solemnity that seeped into my heart for some reason when the historical Dongwon Mine, which had been lonely operating in the lot directly under the casino, was finally closed forever... The new styles of landscapes gradually setting in to the two areas, making such memories fade away, pushed the traces left by modern times one after another into the realm of eternity. So Sabuk already reached a state beyond the boundaries of modern days, and Cheoram, which still has some of the original form remaining, seems to have no choice but to entrust itself to the storm of change as it slowly shifts towards its end. ● Meanwhile, among the precious photographs I obtained by pressing the shutter with a strict perspective in pursuit of the disappearing traces of the past and newly emerging signs, and the tracks of time included in the pictures as well as the social symbolism implicated, I chose and released a few to be shown in the Taebaek Coal Museum. After all, it is said that photographs manifest greater power when they witness absence rather than presence. Though they are only part of what I have acquired, I hope the photographs forming this exhibition will play their given role to evoke people's memories, stimulate their consciousness and serve as valuable materials. ■ LEEGANGWOO
