The works of Sook-Hwan Oh reflected the interests on the vast universe which could not be grasped. So, her subjects are mainly 'the wind crossing on the plains', 'the boundless seashore' or 'desert with sand' and so on. The reason why we feels 'invisible energy' in her works is because she has insight to see 'energy' which is to move the universe, although it isn't see our limited eyes. Only can the author see and express it through her insight and contemplation of the nature. And the painting of stars is laid on top of the other one, which is an approach of stressing the sense of a great distance. This distance is the immeasurable one lying between the macrocosmic universe beyond the phenomenal world and us in this visible world.
Sook-Hwan Oh accepts this distance in the manner of viewing, that is to say, "contemplating." She just calmly examines and accepts it, the distance between us and the universe. She expresses the movements filling the gap between the place where the artist stands and the point where the immeasurable universe stands. They are expressed not as a vertical descent but as a horizontal line of dynamics. The artist is not overpowered by the gigantic universal order, but she feels an irresistible yearning and sublimates the great invisible energy in nature into visible world.
Her works are to discover new life in the universe. This is necessary to need keenly insight and deep observation. And through contemplation of the universe, she wants to show how the invisible energy continuously moves the universe. Through this exhibition we can discover it. ■ Oh, Joo Hwan
