합성열병 Synthetic Fever

코리아나미술관은 최근 급속도로 진화하며 일상 깊숙이 스며든 생성형 AI의 가능성과 한계, 그리고 이를 둘러싼 흥분과 두려움이 교차하는 오늘날의 지형을 동시대 작가 9 인의 시선으로 조망하는 국제기획전 『합성열병 Synthetic Fever』을 3월 19부터 6월 28일까지 개최한다.

인공지능 Artificial Intelligence 시대를 맞이하며 인간과 기술의 관계는 더욱 복잡해지고 있다. 특히, 생성형 AI의 진화는 강력한 게임 체인저이자 촉진제가 되어 다양한 기술과 서비스의 폭발적 성장을 이끌며, 사회·경제·문화 전반에 걸쳐 큰 영향을 미치고 있다. 나아가, 인간의 고유 영역으로 여겨졌던 '창의성'의 경계를 허물고, 창작의 개념 자체를 근본적으로 재고하게 만든다.

전시 제목은 프랑스 철학자 자크 데리다의 저서 『아카이브 열병Archive Fever』(1995)에서 착안한 것이다. 데리다는 아카이브를 단순히 과거 보존의 공간이 아닌, 기억과 망각, 권력과 욕망이 뒤얽힌 역동적 장으로 보았는데, 전시는 이러한 개념을 오늘날의 합성미디어synthetic media 환경으로 확장한다. '합성synthetic'은 데이터를 학습하고 재구성하는 AI의 생성 메커니즘을 드러내며, 이는 이번 전시의 핵심 개념이다. 이어지는 '열병fever'은 생성형 AI를 향한 광풍과 함께 그 이면에 자리한 불안과 위기를 은유한다.

이렇듯 『합성열병』은 AI 시대 우리가 직면한—혹은 아직 포착하지 못한—이슈들을 다층적으로 감각하고 성찰한다. 참여 작가들은 인간의 주체성과 예술가로서의 정체성, 데이터 추출과 편향, AI 환각, 유령노동 등 다양한 주제를 탐구한 사진, 회화, 미디어 설치 작품 약 30점을 선보인다. ■ 코리아나미술관

The Coreana Museum of Art holds a thematic exhibition titled Synthetic Fever, which examines the possibilities and limitations of generative AI, a rapidly evolving technology that increasingly shapes our daily lives. ● With the arrival of the era of Artificial Intelligence, the relationship between humans and technology grows more complex. Generative AI, in particular, has become a transformative force, driving innovation across industries and profoundly impacting society, culture, and the economy. It also challenges long-held notions of 'creativity,' traditionally seen as an exclusively human domain, prompting a fundamental reexamination of what it means to create. ● The exhibition title draws inspiration from Jacques Derrida's Archive Fever (1995), in which the philosopher reinterprets the archive as a dynamic space entangled with memory, forgetting, power, and desire. The exhibition extends this discourse into the realm of synthetic media. Synthetic highlights AI's generative mechanisms—its ability to learn from and reconstruct data—while Fever captures both the fervor surrounding AI's potential and the underlying anxieties it provokes. ● Through approximately 30 works spanning photography, painting, and media installations, the exhibition delves into key issues of the AI era, including human subjectivity, the evolving role of the artist, data extraction and bias, AI hallucinations, and ghost works. By engaging with these critical themes, Synthetic Fever invites reflection on the profound shifts we are witnessing—many of which we are only beginning to grasp. ■ The Coreana Museum of Art
