숲에 머무는 다정한 것들

나는 도시 속에서 마주하게 되는 가로수 혹은 정원의 수많은 나무의 모습에서 나를 순간 멈칫하게 하는 무언가를 느낄 때가 있다. 주변을 산책하며 바라보게 되는 나무들의 모습은 흘러가는 시간의 흐름 속에 있는 누군가의 다정한 흔적을 감지하게 한다. 그는 나무에 물을 대어 겨울이 지나 다시 움트는 것을 도와주고, 나무가 쓰러지지 않도록 버팀목을 대어주는가 하면, 나무끼리의 지지대를 통해 마치 하나의 유기적인 건축과도 같은 구조물을 도시 속에 연출해 놓는다. ● 나는 이러한 도시의 숲과 정원의 풍경을 마주하면서 보이지 않는 누군가의 손길이 사람들과의 관계와 사회, 또한 그 너머를 보듬고 있지 않을까 생각한다. 생명을 줄 수 있는 물, 나무를 서 있게 하는 지지대, 쓰러진 나무의 가지를 붙잡고 있는 당김줄, 나무끼리 연결하고 연약한 나무를 덮어주는 붕대와 커튼과 같은 천 등을 통해서, 누군가 돌보고 있는 우리가 사는 세상의 풍경을 담고 있다.

나무를 천으로 덮거나 둘러싸인 담과 같은 풍경은 침묵 속에 고독하면서도 열려진 공간을 형성하는데 이는 누군가와 마주하는 고요한 장소가 되기도 한다. 불완전한 존재로 서로의 버팀목이 되며 이루어가는 숲의 장막은 현대 사회에서 상호 보완과 연대를 통해 회복하는 공간을 나타내고 있다. ● 비단에 먹과 채색으로 표현한 작품 속의 정원과 숲은 현대의 삶을 살아가는 인간을 보듬고 위로하는 존재이기도 하면서 서로와 연대하며 살아가는 도시 속 존재들의 기록과 흔적을 담고 있기도 하다.

나는 모든 것이 멈춘 듯한 밤의 정원 풍경을 마주하면서, 밤의 시간을 묵묵히 이루고 있는 자연과 그 속에 살아있는 것들을 비추고 있는 존재들을 느낀다. 나는 낮의 시간에 숲과 정원의 모습에서 느꼈던 존재가 밤의 시간 속에서도 여전히 돌보고 있음을 인지하면서, 그와 같은 밤의 시간의 정원으로 들어가는 장막을 표현하고자 하였다. 숲으로 덮이고 천으로 가려진 밤의 정원은 고요함 속에서 접히고 열리는 장막을 형성하며 그곳에서 누군가와 대면하는 다정한 공간이 되기를 기대한다. ■ 임현경

There are moments when I encounter trees along streets or in gardens in the city something about their presence momentarily stops me, stirring an inexplicable sense within. Observing these trees as I walk through the city, I feel a subtle trace of care woven into the fabric of time. Someone has tended to them, watering them to foster new buds after winter's retreat, propping them up to prevent collapse, and creating a cohesive, almost architectural structure among the trees using stakes and support. ● As I stand before this urban woods and garden landscape, I wonder if an unseen hand is embracing our relationships, our communities, and perhaps even something beyond. The water that sustains life, the stakes that hold trees upright, the ropes that steady fallen branches, and the cloth used as bandages or coverings for fragile trees—through these elements, I sense a cared-for world around us. ● The scenes where trees are cloaked in fabric or enclosed by fences create spaces that are silent yet open, simultaneously isolated and accessible. These spaces become quiet places for connection with someone. The canopy of this woods, built through mutual support among imperfect beings, symbolizes a restorative space that speaks to recovery through interdependence and solidarity within modern society. ● In my works painted on silk, using ink and colors, I depict gardens and woods that embody comfort and solace for those navigating contemporary life. They are traces of shared existence, bearing witness to lives intertwined within the cityscape. ● When I confront the seemingly still landscapes of a garden at night, I sense the quiet, patient presence of nature and all the life within it. In these scenes, I tried to convey the same spirit that once felt in the daylight's woods and garden, remains a gentle guardian in the night. The garden, shrouded in fabric and embraced by the woods in the stillness of night, forms a space where the curtain closes and opens in silence, creating a warm place for quiet communion with someone. ■ LIMHYUNKYUNG
