편안해서 아름다운 ● 편안함. 신하순의 작품세계를 가장 잘 대변해주는 말이 아닐까. 어떤 작품이건 그의 작품은 모두 편안하다. "생각이나 느낌들을 편안하게 화면으로 기록하는 일이 무엇보다 우선"이고, "그림을 그리면서 생활의 리듬을 찾고 호흡을 이어주는 생명의 연장과도 같은 유희를 만끽할 수 있다는 것은 커다란 즐거움이요 기쁨"이라고 했던 그의 언급은 작품에서 느껴지는 편안함의 근원이 무엇인지 시사해준다. 실제로도 그의 그림은 '생활 그림', '그림 일기', '생활 일기' 등의 별칭에서 볼 수 있듯이 자신의 주변과 생활, 기억으로부터 소재와 정서를 가져왔다. ● 그렇지만 신하순의 그림이 편안하게 느껴지는 것은 비단 내용이나 소재 때문만은 아니다. 사실 그 특유의 표현방식에서 기인하는 바가 적지 않다. 정교한 형태, 날카로운 선, 진한 먹, 강한 채색 등은 그의 작품에서는 찾아보기 어려운 것이다. 오히려 그는 그 반대지점에 있는 단순한 형태, 느슨한 선, 연한 먹, 담채와 넓은 여백 등을 적극적으로 활용한다. 이는 과거 문인화文人畵로부터 연유한 조형요소들로서 그의 작품의 근간과 정체성을 암시한다. 어쨌든 소박한 제재와 담박한 화풍이 어우러져 '작품의 편안함'으로 귀결된 것이다.

그렇다면 일상과 기억을 제재로 하면서 형태를 단순화하고, 느슨한 선과 연한 먹, 담채를 사용하고, 여백을 강조한다면 누구의 그림이건 혹은 어떤 그림이건 편안한 그림이 될 수 있을까? 당연히 그렇지 않다. 사실 신하순의 그림이 머금고 있는 편안함의 배후에는 그간의 오랜 구상과 다양한 시도, 변화의 모색이 자리하고 있다. 자화상이자 주변인들의 초상화이며 일상을 그린 풍속화이기도 하고, 기억을 반추하여 그린 실경산수화이기도 한, 어쩌면 평범할 수도 있는 그림을 색다르면서도 편안하게 그리고자 한 노력의 결과인 것이다.

일면 어수룩하게 보일 수도 있는 작품 속 인물과 건물, 나무 등은 대상의 실제 특징을 효과적으로 요약하고 포착하여 단순화 혹은 과장한 것이다. 여기에 수많은 관찰, 스케치와 에스키스 그리고 연구가 수반되었음은 물론이다. 다시 이러한 형태는 힘이 없는 듯한 느슨한 선을 통해 그 편안함이 더욱 강조된다. 선 역시 필력의 부족이 아닌 오랜 단련을 통해 푸근함과 여유로움이 획득된 것이다. 실제로 그의 선은 숙련되고 통제된 붓질을 통해서 의도된 느슨함을 구현했을 따름이다. 다시 이러한 형태와 선은 적재적소의 여백과 어우러진다. 먹과 채색도 중요한 요소이다. 앞서 언급하였듯이 그는 강렬한 시각성과 인상을 주는 짙은 먹이나 진한 채색은 좀처럼 사용하지 않는다. 연회색에 가까운 담묵淡墨의 점과 선, 제한적으로 이용된 파스텔 톤의 담채淡彩를 통해 화면에 따뜻함과 청량감을 더했다. 마음이 편안해지는 화풍, 화면, 작품이지만, 그에게 있어서 그 편안함을 얻는 과정은 결코 편안하거나 쉽지 않았음을 짐작할 수 있는 부분이다.
