두 도시 이야기   A Tale of Two Cities

오버랩 OverLab.의 위빙랩 WeavingLab.은 도시의 장소와 역사성에 초점을 맞춰 현대 사회의 불균형과 소외를 다루는 연구 기반 예술 프로젝트이다. 광주(강수지&이하영)와 바콜로드/일로일로(모린 오스트리아&마고 블라스) 지역의 예술가가 각각 팀으로 협업하여 두 도시의 장소, 문화, 사회, 역사와 관련한 주제를 탐구하고, 예술적으로 재해석한 공동창작 작품을 통해 『두 도시의 이야기』를 전달한다.

강수지&이하영 작가는 필리핀 바콜로드에서 주로 생산되는 마스코바도(유기농 설탕) 공정무역의 역사와 광주의 토종쌀을 통해 우리의 식재료를 지키기 위한 농부/사람들을 연결한다. 수많은 어려움에도 불구하고 다양성과 공동체의 가치를 지키려고 노력하는 필리핀과 한국 사람들의 닮아있는 그 마음을 담은 설치 작업을 선보인다.

마고 블라스&모린 오스트리아 작가는 두 도시의 섬유/방직 산업 역사에 주목하여 그 안에 중요한 요소로 작용했던 여성 직공의 노동력과 나아가 사회 속 여성의 역할에 대해 조명한다. 산업의 역사 속 인고의 시간을 거쳐온 여성/인간 삶의 이야기를 바콜로드의 황마, 일로일로의 토착 직물 조각, 광주의 천을 활용해 유기적으로 엮고 친환경적 공정으로 제작한 작품을 통해 예술의 지속 가능한 대안을 제시하고자 한다. ● 『두 도시 이야기』는 공동창제작의 과정을 공개하는 전시로, 리서치를 통해 작품이 완성되어 가는 과정을 엿볼 수 있다. 11.8일 공개될 쇼케이스 행사에서는 두 도시를 오가며 어떠한 맥락의 리서치가 진행되었고, 이를 어떻게 작품화 하였는지 등 창작의 과정을 들여다 볼 수 있다. ■ 오버랩(김선영&박유영)

WeavingLab. of OverLab. is a research-based art project that addresses disparities and alienation in contemporary society by focusing on urban location and historicity. Artists from Gwangju (Sooji Kang & Hayoung Lee) and Bacolod/Iloilo in the Philippines (Moreen Austria & Margaux Blas) collaborate in teams to explore themes related to location, culture, society, and history in their respective cities and communicate "A Tale of Two Cities" through collaborative artistic interpretations. ● Sooji Kang and Hayoung Lee connect the fair-trade history of muscovado (organic sugar), which is mainly produced in Bacolod, Philippines, with the farmers and other people who protect the integrity of Gwangju's native rice. The installation work they present showcases the similarities between the Filipino and Korean people who strive to preserve the values of diversity and community despite their numerous challenges. ● Margaux Blas and Moreen Austria focus on the history of the textile industry in both cities, highlighting the labor of women weavers as an integral part of the industry and the role of women in society. They aim to present a sustainable alternative to art by weaving the stories of human lives, especially those of women, through the laborious history of the industry with Jute fabric from Bacolod, indigenous textile fragments from Iloilo, and fabric from Gwangju, all organically woven and produced using eco-friendly processes. ● A Tale of Two Cities is an exhibition that reveals the process of co-creation, providing a glimpse into the research and creation of the artwork. The showcase event, which will open to the public on November 8, will provide an insight into the creative process, including the contextual research that was conducted between the two cities and how it was translated into artworks. ■ OverLab.(Seonyoung KIM&Yuyoung PARK)
