INTERSTELLAR: 별과 별 사이 ● 어릴 적부터 늘 우주를 동경했고 관심이 많았다. 영화 '인터스텔라'를 몇 번씩 다시 보고, 내가 머리가 좋았다면 천문학자가 되었을 것이라는 농담을 자주 할 정도였다. 암흑 속에 빛나는 별들은 얼마나 멀리 떨어져 있을지, 그 별에서도 내가 보일지, 다른 행성에서 보는 하늘은 어떨지, 시공간이 뒤틀려 있다는 블랙홀은 또 얼마나 신비로울지...어린 시절 나의 낙서 속에는 그 나이이기에 가능한 천진난만한 상상과 심오한 생각들이 가득했다.

스트리트 아트, 그래피티는 어떤 주제를 다루든 아티스트가 펼쳐낼 수 있는 소재와 색감이 무궁무진한 장르이다. 도자공예를 전공했지만 그래피티에 전념하게 된 것도 내 속의 우주를 왕창 꺼내 놓고 싶은 이유 것 같다. 뜻 모를 반항심, 대체 그 끝이 어디일까 하는 고뇌, 그리고 설명할 수 없는 욕망까지 더해져 내 안에 어떤 에너지가 만들어졌고, 그것은 그래피티라는 행위로 분출되었다.

까칠한 에너지가 조금은 둥글둥글해졌을 무렵이었다. 나는 친구를 만날 때면"어이 왔어?" 하면서 손을 드는 제스처를 취하곤 했는데, 어느 날 나에게 똑같이 손을 흔드는 친구를 보고 어린 시절을 떠올리게 되었다. 친구가 저 멀리 작게 보일 때부터 "안녀어어엉!"하며 격하게 손을 흔들던 그때의 반가움과 설레는 감정. 복잡하게 머리를 쓰지도 않고 모두와 친구가 될 수 있었던 순도 100%짜리 마음. 그 시절의 마음과 추억을 기억하고 싶어서 헬로맨(HELLOMAN)을 그리게 되었다.

'별과 별 사이'를 뜻하는 인터스텔라는 내가 헬로맨을 통해 그리고자 하는 다양한 관계성을 담아낸 주제이다. "내가 그의 이름을 불러주었을 때, 그는 나에게로 와서 꽃이 되었다"는 김춘수 시의 한 구절처럼 우리 모두의 사이는 별과 별 사이처럼 아주 멀고 의미가 없었다가, 인사를 계기로 매우 가까운 관계가 되기도 한다. 그렇게 가족, 동료, 친구, 연인 등 우리는 살아가는 동안 많은 사람들과 다양한 형태의 인연을 맺으며 살아간다. ● 너와 내가 손을 들어 인사하는 순간은 122만 광년 떨어진 별과 별이 '웜홀'로 연결되는 순간과 같다. 인연의 시작이란 마음의 연결되는 것이다. 그래서 헬로맨 왼쪽 가슴에 자리한 심장은 우리의 관계를 이어주는 '웜홀'을 뜻한다. 머나먼 별에서 각자 살아가던 너와 내가 가까워지는 것은 '웜홀'의 역할을 하는 두근대는 심장 덕분이니까. ■ 범민

INTERSTELLAR: from one star to another ● Galaxies have been my aspiration and interest since I was a child. I watched "Interstellar" multiple times, often joking that I would have become an astronomer if only I had the right kind of mind. How vast is the distance from one star to another, shining in the expanse of space? Would the stars notice me? How mesmerizing is a black hole? And how would the sky look different from another planet? My childhood scratch papers were filled with both naive imaginations and profound thoughts. ● Street art knows no bounds; whatever topic, color, or materials an artist chooses, graffiti embraces it. I majored in ceramic art, but I create graffiti – perhaps because I want to pour the galaxies inside me into this world. I wrestle with the endless rebellion within me. This rebellion, along with an inexplicable fervor, generates energy that is released into the world as graffiti. ● Eventually, my restless energy grounded itself. I would raise my hand in a big, enthusiastic wave to greet friends: "Hey, over here!" One day, a friend returned the gesture, reminding me of my childhood days – The pure excitement and joy of greeting friends from afar: "HEEEEEY!" Back then, we did not need to be clever to make friends; we were 100% genuine. HELLOMAN was created to honor those memories and the times. ● INTERSTELLAR: from one star to another, represents the various relationships I aim to depict through HELLOMAN. "When I called his name, he came to me and became a flower," a line from Kim Chun-Soo's poem, symbolizes how two distant, seemingly insignificant individuals – like stars- often form close relationships through simple greetings. This is how we create families, friendships, colleagues, and lovers, a network of connections throughout our lives. ● The moment we raise our hand to greet someone is like the moment one star connects to another 122 light-years away through a wormhole. The heart placed on HELLOMAN's left chest represents that wormhole, symbolizing the network among us. We, who lived separate lives, are drawn closer by the beating heart that binds us like a wormhole. ■ BFMIN
