포항시립미술관에서는 우리가 직면한 세계를 돌아보고자 《내일의 날씨를 말씀드리겠습니다》를 개최한다. 이 전시는 기상관측, 날씨 예보에서 착안하여 '내일의 날씨를 말씀드리겠습니다'라는 평범한 문장에 담긴 일상적 예측의 의미를 헤아리고, 정교해진 예측과 압도적 변수로 점철된 오늘의 세계를 감각하는 작가들의 인식을 살핀다. 그러면서 전 지구적 기후 변화를 감지하며 갖게 된 인간의 상념, 그 이상을 생각하려 한다.

우리는 삶을 예측할 수 있을까? 삶은 많은 변수와 불확실성으로 가득하다. 그래서 우리는 삶의 모든 상황을 정확히 예측한다는 게 사실상 불가능하다는 것을 잘 알고 있다. 그런데도 과학적 접근, 통계모형 등을 사용하여 특정 사건, 상황이나 경향을 끊임없이 예측해 왔다. 물론 여기에도 여전히 확률적 변수가 발생시키는 불확실성이 존재한다. 만국의 지속적인 협력과 고도의 기술 집약으로 정확도는 더욱 높아지고, 인공지능까지 합세한 기상관측도 결코 예외는 아니다. 사실 날씨를 예측한다는 것은 인간이 지상의 삶에 적응해 나가면서 발전시킨 가장 위대한 능력에 속한다는 의견1)에도 불구하고 말이다. ● 쏟아내는 일상적 예측 차원에서 일기예보는 우리에게 일상적 결정을 효율적으로 내릴 수 있도록 정보를 제공하고, 또 이 세계의 복잡성을 직감적으로 이해하도록 한다. 예컨대 출근길, 등굣길에 우산을 챙기는 것부터 날씨에 적합한 옷을 고르거나 교통 상황을 예상하기까지, 또 한낮의 뙤약볕을 미리 피곤해하기도 한다. 허나 우산은 필요 없고, 예상보다 복장이 거추장스럽거나 가벼웠던 것처럼 그냥 넘길, 빗나간 상황은 즐비하다. 하지만 역대 최장 폭염과 열대야를 기록하고, 아프리카에 눈이 내리며, 저 멀리 어느 도시들에서 최악의 폭설과 한파로 대규모 정전이 발생하는 등의 사태는 모두 예상 밖의 일이다. 전례 없는 기상현상은 예측 오류의 수용범위를 이미 뚫고 나갔다. 여기서 우리의 불안은 불타오른다.

우리는 경험에서 습득한 정보로 세상을 파악하고 인식하기 십상이다. 기후 변화만큼 일상과 밀접하게 연관되어 현실을 이토록 생생하게 가리키는 지표도 없다. 날씨는 더 이상 비 오고, 눈 내리고, 바람 부는 것만을 의미하지 않는다. 자연을 문명으로 뒤덮으며 우리는 유토피아가 실현되리라 믿었다. 이 믿음은 이제 위태로운 세계로 등장한다. 이에 전시는 인간이 만든 변수와 변수 간의 상호작용으로 가득한 삶을 느끼며, 불안한 짐작 위에서 전개된다. 여기 함께하는 작가 9인으로부터 탄생한 시간에서 익숙한 자연에 대한 감각을 일깨우며, 주름지고 뒤엉킨 세계를 직감한다. 그들은 세계를 재현하지 않고 환기하고, 상징하지 않으며 현실을 포착한다. ● 태양은 어김없이 뜨고, 달도 어김없이 차오른다. 그러나 '내일의 날씨를 말씀드리겠습니다'라는 이 일상적 구절이 갖고 있는, 내일이 존재한다는 당연함은 이제 더 이상 어제와 같은 평온한 내일이 되리라는 기대와 안심이 아니다. 이는 어쩌면 오늘의 시간에서 내일을 살도록 만든, 위기감으로 가득한 현실의 불안과 공포다. 삶을 예측할 수 없는 인간 능력의 한계, 오늘과 내일, 현재와 미래 사이에 존재하는 희망과 안도, 긴장과 불안 등으로 우리는 이제 공동의 문제를 상기한다. 완결된 현실을 바라보고 있다는 피폐한 시선을 거부하며 우리는 미래를 기대하고, 예측한다. 실은 알고 있지 않은가, 오늘은 인간이었지만 내일은 자연이라는 것을.

#1. 그러한(풍경) ● 낯설지 않은, 그러한 풍경은 오히려 '나'를 향한다. 자연의 밀도, 문명의 향연을 따라 미끄러지는 야릇한 행복감, 그 사이를 비집고 스며드는 불안감은 인간의 삶과 존재에 대한 사유로 이어진다. 오늘 생각하는 내일은 어떠한가. 내일의 당연함은 누구의 꿈인가.

#2. 불안한(정황) ● 삶의 찬란함도 자연의 웅장함도 신음하는 지상에 있다. 여기 불안과 공포를 직감하게 하는 정황이 있다. 우리의 행위로 우리의 삶을 훼손하는 것을 지켜보던 두려움은 분노로 뒤덮인다. 오늘로 내일을 삭제하는 공간에서 우리는 위태로움을 감지한다. 우리는 운명공동체다.

#3. 유사한(자연) ● 자연과 문명은 완전히 단절되지 않았다. 오늘에 서서 내일을 사는 우리, 예측은 미래를 선사하나 완성되지 않는 세계로 존재한다. 현재와 미래 사이에 감도는 긴장감. 우리가 알 수 있는 것과 알 수 없는 것 사이에서 느끼는 감정, 모호하고 흐릿한 그 간격, 거기에 유사한 자연이 있다. ■ 이보경

We at the Pohang Museum of Steel Art are holding Here's Tomorrow's Weather Forecast to reflect on the world we face. Paying attention to meteorological observation, or weather forecasts, this exhibition considers the significance of routine predictions held in the ordinary sentence "Here's tomorrow's weather forecast" and examines the perceptions of artists sensing today's world lined with now-sophisticated predictions and overwhelming variables. As it does so, the exhibition seeks to consider human notions acquired while sensing global climate change, and more. ● Can we predict life? Life is full of many variables and uncertainty. Therefore, we know well that it is actually impossible to accurately predict all of life's circumstances. We have nonetheless ceaselessly been predicting certain events, situations, and trends using scientific approaches and statistical models. Of course, the uncertainty probability factors create still exists here. Meteorological observation in which the accuracy is further enhanced with the continued cooperation of all nations and high-level technological concentration, and even A.I. has joined forces, is by no means an exception. This is despite the opinion that forecasting the weather is actually the greatest ability humans have developed while adjusting to life on Earth.1) ● As a part of routine predictions galore, weather forecasts provide us information helping to efficiently make everyday decisions and intuitively understand this world's complexity. Examples include things from grabbing an umbrella on one's way to work or school to picking the right clothes for the weather, and even predicting the traffic situation, and sometimes one becomes tired of the intense mid-day sun in advance. However, there is no shortage of inaccurately predicted situations, too mild for the attention, such as when an umbrella is not needed or one's clothes are bulkier or lighter than expected. Still, situations of the longest heatwave and string of tropical nights on record, snow in Africa, and large-scale blackouts occurring due to the worst blizzards and cold waves in cities far away, etc. were all unexpected. The unprecedented meteorological phenomena have already passed through and gone outside the acceptance range of prediction error. Our anxiety flames up here. ● We often understand and perceive the world with information obtained through experience. Few indices point to reality this vividly in close connection to daily life as climate change. The weather no longer means only rain, snow, and wind. We believed Utopia would be realized as we covered nature with civilization. This belief now appears as a perilous world. At this, the exhibition begins on anxious assumptions while sensing a life full of human-made variables and interactions between factors. It awakens senses regarding familiar nature and intuitively senses a wrinkled and entangled world in the time born of these nine artists who are with us here. They evoke the world without representing it, and they capture reality without using symbols. ● The sun surely rises, and the moon surely grows full. However, the naturalness of tomorrow existing that this ordinary phrase of "Here's tomorrow's weather forecast" has is no longer the expectation and assurance it will be a peaceful tomorrow that is like yesterday. This is perhaps the anxiety and fear of a reality full of a sense of crisis that have caused us to live tomorrow in today's time. We now remember common issues with the limits of human ability, which is incapable of predicting life, and the hope, relief, tension, and anxiety existing between today and tomorrow, between the present and the future. As we anticipate and predict the future, we reject the impoverished perspective that we are viewing a complete reality. After all, we in fact know we were humans today but are nature tomorrow.

#1. Such (Scenery) ● Such scenery, which is not unfamiliar, faces "me." Nature's density, a peculiar sense of happiness sliding along the feast of civilization, and the anxiety seeping in through the gap lead to thought regarding human life and existence. How is the tomorrow one thinks of today? Whose dream is the naturalness of tomorrow?

#2. Anxious (Circumstances) ● Life's brilliance and nature's grandeur are all on a moaning Earth. There is a circumstance causing us to intuitively sense anxiety and fear. The fear that watched us damage our lives with our actions becomes covered with anger. We sense peril in the space that deletes tomorrow with today. We are a community sharing a common fate.

#3. Similar (Nature) ● Nature and civilization have not become completely disconnected. We who live tomorrow standing on today, predictions present the future but exist as an uncompleted world. The tension lingering between the present and future. A similar nature is there in the emotion we feel in that vague and blurry interval between what we can know and what we cannot know. ■ LEE Bokyoung
