금모로단청:서울 Dancheong in Seoul

단청은 오방색(청색, 적색, 황색, 백색, 흑색)을 이용하여 목조건축물을 아름답게 꾸미고 비바람으로부터 목재를 보호하는 기능을 한다. 단청은 건축물의 위계에 따라 '가칠단청', '긋기단청', '모로단청', '금모로단청', '금단청'의 5가지로 구분되는데 조선시대 궁궐의 주요 건축물에는 모로단청보다 화려하지만 금단청보다는 단순한 '금모로단청'이 그려져 있다. ● 이번 전시회에서는 이러한 '금모로단청'을 모사하고 응용한 작품들을 선보인다. 전시된 작품은 단청안료와 아교를 사용하여 실제로 국가 유산을 수리하는 방법으로 제작되었다. 대부분의 사람들은 실제 목조건축물의 단청을 가까이 관찰할 기회가 많지 않다. 이번 전시회를 통해 서울의 중요 국가유산의 단청을 가까이서 자세히 살펴보고, 현대인의 시각에서 전통 단청을 바라보는 경험을 해보기를 바란다. ■ 서울시청 하늘광장 갤러리

도화림 圖畵林 ● '도화림(圖畵林)''은 조선시대에 단청을 담당했던 국가 기관인 '도화서(圖畵署)'에서 따온 것이며 서양화, 한국화, 디자인, 판화 등 다양한 전공의 작가들로 구성되어있다. '도화림'의 작가들은 국가유산수리기능자 '화공', 국가유산수리기술자 '단청'의 국가전문자격을 보유하고 있으며, 국가유산을 수리할 수 있는 장인(匠人)들이다. 이들은 전통 단청의 아름다움을 계승하고 그 가치를 현대에 알리기 위해 활발한 작품 활동을 하고 있다. ■

"Dancheong" refers to the traditional Korean decorative painting used on wooden buildings. It serves both an aesthetic purpose and a practical one - protecting the wood from the elements. Dancheong employs a palette based on the five cardinal colors, called "Obangsaek": blue, red, yellow, white, and black, each symbolizing different elements of nature and philosophy. ● Dancheong is categorized into seven types according to the hierarchy and function of the building: "Gachil Dancheong," "Geutgi Dancheong," "Moro Dancheong," "Geummoro Dancheong," and "Geum Dancheong." Among these, Geummoro Dancheong is commonly found on significant Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897) palace structures, being more ornate than Moro Dancheong but simpler than Geum Dancheong. ● This exhibition presents works that imitate and reinterpret Geummoro Dancheong, using Dancheong pigments and glue, crafted with methods employed in the restoration of national heritages. Since most people rarely have the opportunity to closely observe Dancheong on wooden architecture, this exhibition offers a chance to view these intricate details up close and appreciate the beauty of this important cultural heritage from a modern perspective. ■ SKY PLAZA GALLERY

Dohwarim ● The name Dohwarim is inspired by the Dohwaseo, a national institute from the Joseon Dynasty responsible for overseeing Dancheong painting. The collective consists of artists from diverse fields including Western painting, Korean painting, design, and printmaking. All members hold official national qualifications as Hwagong, artisans skilled in the restoration of cultural heritages, and as Dancheong technicians, specialized in the preservation of traditional Korean art. Through their work, Dohwarim aims to continue the legacy of traditional Dancheong and to share its value with contemporary audiences. ■
