광주비엔날레가 열리는 9월, 예술공간 집에서는 광주를 터전으로 국내외에서 활발한 활동을 펼쳐온 이매리 작가님의 특별기획초대전을 마련하였습니다. ● 『그들은 우리가 된다_2024(They Become Us)』는 유발 하라리의 책 『21세기를 위한 21가지 제언』에서 가져온 문장으로, '그들'에서 '우리'로 향하는 작가의 시선을 포괄적으로 대변합니다. 인류의 근원과 자신의 근원에 관한 미술적 탐구를 지속해 온 이매리 작가님은 이번 전시에서 '광주고려인마을'을 관찰하며 이주사와 전쟁사 등의 역사적 탐구에서 비롯된 다양한 시선을 시각화한 작품들을 선보입니다. 광주 안의 '그들'이 어떻게 '우리'로 나아가는지, 예술이 품어 낸 포용과 공감의 시선을 제시합니다. ● 예술이 시대의 많은 논제들을 어떻게 해석해 나가는지, 우리의 현재에 예술이 어떤 역할을 할 수 있는지 새로이 되새겨볼 수 있는 이매리 작가님의 초대전에 많은 분들과 함께 할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 『그들은 우리가 된다 2024(They Become US_2024) 』은 광주를 기반으로 작품활동을 하고 있는 나의 시선으로 현시대 속 '이주와 공동체'에 대해 함께 이야기해 보고자 하는 전시이다. 광주 안의 또 다른 이웃이라 할 수 있는 '고려인 마을'을 인류의 전쟁사와 이주사적 관점에서 상징적으로 시각화하였다. ● 이번 전시는 지난 수년간(2013~2024) 천착해 온 주제인 「Poetry Delivery」 시리즈의 확장적 작업 중의 하나이다. 나의 삶과 생활, 작품 활동의 근거지인 광주 안에 형성된 큰 공동체인 '고려인 마을'이 모티베이션(Motivation)이 되었다. 민족적 개념 아래 그들의 이주사를 살펴보았고, 나아가 전 인류의 이주사가 확장적으로 다가왔다. 이주사와 더불어 인류의 전쟁사가 함께 역사를 만들어 가고 있음을 인지한 지점은 나의 탐구가 새로이 확장되는 계기를 만들어냈다. 그간 내 작품의 주 방향이었던 인류학적, 사회학적 시각을 더욱 깊게 확장해 나가고, 또 이를 다양한 시선과 맥락으로 엮어나갔다.

광주 안에 고려인들이 둥지를 틀기 시작한 지 20여 년이 지난 현재, 이들은 대부분 3세대가 함께 모여 사는 가족 유형을 이루고 있다. 가족구성원들의 한국 생활이 장기간 길어지면서, 이민법이 허용된다는 전제하에 이들은 영구 정착을 꿈꾸고 있다. 광주가 '고려인 마을'이라는 존재에 차츰 주목하게 된 것은 이들이 '고려인' 관련 행사를 지속적으로 만들며 스스로의 존재를 끊임없이 표출하고 있기 때문이다. 덕분에 직간접적으로 많은 사회 단체와 NGO, 의료 등의 지원과 정책이 늘어가고 있는 상황이지만, 여전히 이민자들의 삶과 생활은 주류를 중심으로 조직된 제도나 법에서 조금 비켜난 열악한 상황의 연속도 반복되고 있다. ● 작가로서 나의 시선은 '고려인들이 그들의 희망대로 이주민이라는 신분을 벗어나, 주류 사회로 진입이 가능할 것인지'로 향한다. 우리의 동포이자 이민자인 그들에 대한 지원과 정책은 한국 사회의 정치, 자본과 긴밀하게 연동되는 문제를 가지고 있다. 나는 고려인들이 살고 있는 터전이 어떤 '약속의 땅'이 될 수 있는지를 끊임없이 질문해 보았다. 이렇듯 광주의 '고려인 마을'이 모티브가 되어 시작된 작품이지만, 그 안에 펼쳐진 인류사와 전쟁사, 이주사가 동시에 입체적으로 펼쳐졌다. '인류의 역사는 전쟁의 역사이다.'라고 말한 인류학자의 주장처럼, 20여 년이라는 고려인의 짧은 이주사는 이번 전시의 전체적 맥락을 주도해 나간다. 나는 '인류사'라는 거대한 흐름 안에서 이러한 일련의 상황을 시각예술로 보여주고자 한다.

이번 전시 작품의 구성은 3섹션으로 나뉜다. ● 첫번째 섹션은 「7천개의 별과 약속의 땅 2024」 (사운드 설치, 복합 매체, 가변 크기) 이다. 작품의 소재가 된 고려인 마을 산하 「GBS고려방송 (FM93Mlhz)」은 공중파 라디오 방송으로 고려인들의 언어인 러시아어와 한국어로 송출되고 있다. 이러한 방식으로 운영되는 방송국은 한국에서 유일하다. 「고려 방송」은 고려인 마을을 거점으로 살아가는 이민자들이 성공적으로 이민사회에 편입하기 위해 필요한 중요한 정보를 제공한다. 고려 방송 송출 사운드 설치와 라디오 프로그램 편성표, 편성 내용 등으로 구성된 설치작품으로 이미지와 사운드가 복합적으로 관객들에게 그들의 메시지를 전해줄 것이다.

두번째 섹션은 「이민자의 물건들...」 (설치, 가변 크기, 2024) 이다. ● 오늘날 우리는 물질과 비물질 모든 것의 이동이 자유롭게 순환되는 시대에 살고 있다. 삶의 거주지를 옮긴 이주민들에게 고향의 기억이 각인된 '사물'은 새로운 삶의 터전에서 어떤 의미가 있을까? 익숙하지 않은 장소에서 기억의 장소를 추억하며, 현실의 낯섦을 해소했을 사물들을 들여다보고 그들의 애환을 이해하려 한다. 고려인 마을의 이주자들이 그들의 거주지에서는 유용하였지만 이곳에 정착한 후에는 아무 쓸모가 없이 기억으로만 존재하게 된 물건들을 소환해, '채집된 사물'들로 엮어 낸 설치작품이다.

세번째 섹션은 「시대사적 사건들의 드로잉 Map」 (캔버스 위에 드로잉, 가변설치, 혼합재료, 2024) 이다. ● 고려인 마을로 이주해 온 이주자들은 비단 고려인만이 아니다. 현재는 다양한 국가의 이주자들이 함께 거주하고 있다. 이주민들의 면면을 깊이 들여다본 결과, 사회진화론에 따른 국제사회의 생태계 안에서 일어난 전 인류의 전쟁사가 그대로 드러났다. 세계 제1, 2차 대전, 내전, 분쟁, 제국주의, 식민지 등 전쟁으로 얼룩진 지구라는 행성 안에서 자행되고 벌어진 굴곡진 시대사적 사건들에 대한 Map은 자연스레 드로잉 형식의 작품으로 생성되었다. 이는 광주의 고려인 마을로 이주해 온 이민자들에 대한 개인의 역사적 사실을 직간접적인 방식으로 보여준다. 한 개인의 삶에 너무도 큰 영향을 주었던 전쟁사와 인류사적 사건들에 대한 표기와 기록적 방식으로 제작된 작품이다.

고려인 마을 ● 현재 행정구역상의 광주광역시 광산구 월곡2동'고려인 마을'은 2004년부터 소수의 고려인이 정착하기 시작하며 형성되었다. 이들의 가족과 친족 및 지인들이 연쇄 이주하면서 고려인 식당 등의 편의시설이 생성되며 이제는 어엿한 고려인 민족 집거지로 변모하였다. 국내 대표적인 고려인 동포의 생활 중심지가 되었으며, 현재 광주 안에 가장 국제적(International)인 지역이며, 7천여 명 이민자가 함께 살아가고 있다. ● 이 구역은 '역사 마을 관광', '동포', '광복', '독립운동', '우크라이나 난민', '세계 고려인 연합' 등으로 구성된 다양한 커뮤니티가 있으며, 현재 국내외 정치, 경제, 문화 등의 이슈에 따라 이민자의 수는 여전히 확장 중이다. ● 국내 고려인이 집중적으로 거주하는 소위 고려인 집거지는 경기도 안산시 「땟곳 마을」과 인천광역시 「함박 마을」, 그리고 광주광역시의 「고려인 마을」이 있다. 이 가운데 광주광역시는 고려인을 위한 주민 조례제정 등에서 가장 발 빠른 움직임을 보이는 곳으로, 고려인 주민을 위한 의료, 법률, 노동, 문화, 교육 분야에서 적극적 지원체계를 갖추고 있다. 한편 고려인 마을 중에서는 유일하게 라디오 방송국을 가지고 있는 곳이기도 하다. '고려인 방송'은 이민자들의 초기 정착, 구직, 육아, 자녀 교육, 고려인 마을 동향, 동포 비자 문제 등 생존 문제 해결을 위한 플랫폼 역할을 하는 중요한 매개체이다. 새로운 이주자는 기존 이주자들의 도움이 절실히 필요하며, 고려인 방송은 이민 생활에 필요한 정보제공을 하는 데 큰 역할을 하고 있다. 이주와 정착의 사이 여러 창구들은 지속적으로 변모해가고 있으며, 이러한 일련의 과정들은 우리의 현재에 또 다른 질문을 끊임없이 던지고 있다. ■ 이매리

In September, coinciding with the Gwangju Biennale, Artspace House is proud to present a special invitational exhibition by Lee Maelee, a Gwangju-based artist known for her active work both domestically and internationally. ● The exhibition, titled They Become Us, draws its name from a sentence in Yuval Harari's 21 Lessons for the 21st Century, encapsulating the artist's shift in focus from 'them' to 'us.' Lee Maelee, who has long explored the origins of humanity and self through her art, showcases works that visualize different perspectives derived from historical research on migration and war. In this exhibition, she observes Gwangju's Koryoin Village, offering a perspective of tolerance and empathy through her art. By illustrating how the 'they' in Gwangju become 'us,' Lee Maelee emphasizes the unifying power of art. We hope many will visit this invitational exhibition to reflect on how art interprets contemporary issues and the vital role it can play in our society.(September 2024) ■ Artspace House

They Become Us_2024 is an exhibition that explores the themes of "migration and community" from my perspective as a Gwangju-based artist. Gwangju Koryoin Village is symbolically visualized through the lens of humanity's history of war and migration. ● This exhibition is part of the expanded Poetry Delivery series, a subject I have been exploring over the past several years (2013-2024). The creation of Koryoin Village, a large immigrant community in Gwangju where I live and work, served as the initial motivation for this project. I delved into their migration history within the broader concept of ethnic groups and approached the migration history of all humankind more expansively. My realization that the history of war and migration has profoundly shaped human history provided an opportunity to expand my exploration. In doing so, I integrated anthropological and sociological perspectives, previously central to my work, into various new perspectives and contexts. ● More than 20 years after the establishment of Koryoin Village in Gwangju, most residents now form three-generational families living together. As they spend more time in Korea, many dream of permanent settlement, contingent upon immigration laws allowing it. Gwangju has begun to take greater notice of Koryoin Village because its residents continually assert their presence by organizing Koryoin-related events. This increased visibility has led to growing support from social groups and NGOs, resulting in more policies and assistance for the community. However, despite these efforts, the lives and livelihoods of immigrants still frequently fall short of the systems and laws designed around the mainstream. ● As an artist, I am focused on whether the Koryo people can transcend their status as immigrants and integrate into mainstream society as they hope. Support and policies for our compatriots and immigrants in Korea are problematically intertwined with politics and capital, which presents challenges. I continually question what kind of "promised land" the Koryoin community envisions for themselves in their current homeland. Inspired by Gwangju Koryoin Village, my work explores human history, war history, and migration history in three dimensions. As an anthropologist once stated, "The history of mankind is a history of war," this exhibition is guided by the brief yet significant 20-year migration history of the Koryoin in Korea. Through visual art, I aim to present these circumstances within the broader narrative of "human history." The works I am displaying in this exhibition are divided into three sections. ● The first section is Seven Thousand Stars and Promised Land (sound installation, mixed media, variable size, 2024) ● Корё GBS (93.5 MHz), affiliated with Gwangju Koryoin Village, is a public radio station that broadcasts in Russian and Korean, the languages of the Koryoin, or Koryo-saram (ethnic Koreans from the former Soviet Union). It is the only broadcasting station in Korea that operates in this unique manner. Корё GBS provides essential information to help immigrants in Koryoin Village successfully integrate into the community. This installation primarily features broadcasts from the station, along with the radio program schedule and content details. Through a blend of images and sounds, the installation conveys its messages to the audience in a multifaceted way. ● The second section is Immigrants' Things (installation, variable size, 2024). ● Today, we live in an era where both material and non-material things circulate freely across borders. For immigrants who have relocated, what significance do objects imprinted with memories of their homeland hold in their new environment? The artist seeks to explore the emotions of joy and sorrow experienced by these individuals, focusing on the objects through which they reminisce about familiar places and find comfort in an unfamiliar reality. This installation is composed of "collected objects" that were once useful to immigrants in their hometowns but have lost their practical value after settling in Koryoin Village, now existing solely as memories. ● The third section is Drawing Map of Historical Events (drawing on canvas, variable installation, mixed media, 2024) ● Not all immigrants to Gwangju Koryoin Village are Koryoin; people from various countries now live together in this community. By closely examining the experiences of these immigrants, the artist reveals the broader history of wars and conflicts driven by the dynamics of international society and influenced by Social Darwinism. This work takes the form of a map, illustrating the complex historical events that have shaped our world—a planet scarred by wars, including World Wars I and II, civil wars, conflicts, imperialism, and colonization. The map serves as both a drawing and a narrative, directly and indirectly reflecting the individual histories of immigrants in Koryoin Village. It is a work that records and notates the significant events in war and human history that have profoundly impacted each person's life.

Gwangju Koryoin Village ● Gwangju Koryoin Village, located in Wolgok 2-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, began with the settlement of a small number of Koryoins. As their families, relatives, and acquaintances gradually moved into the area and convenience facilities, such as Koryoin bistros, were established, it evolved into an enclave for Koryo-saram, or ethnic Koreans from the former Soviet Union. Today, this area serves as a crucial hub for the Koryoin community across the country and is considered the most internationalized area in Gwangju, with approximately 7,000 immigrants residing there. ● The village is home to a diverse range of communities, including those focused on "historical village tourism," "compatriots," "liberation," "the independence movement," "Ukrainian refugees," and the "World Koryoin Union," among others. The number of immigrants continues to grow, influenced by political, economic, and cultural developments both domestically and internationally. ● Gwangju Koryoin Village is one of several Koryo-saram enclaves in Korea, alongside Ansan's Ttaegot Village and Incheon's Hambak Village. Among these, Gwangju is leading the way in enacting resident ordinances for Koryoins and has developed a robust support system in areas such as healthcare, legal services, labor, culture, and education for its Koryo residents. It is also the only village with its own radio broadcasting station, Корё GBS. Корё GBS plays a crucial role as a platform for addressing issues related to immigrants' initial settlement, job searches, childcare, children's education, developments in Koryoin communities, and visa concerns for compatriots. The station has been vital in providing the information necessary for immigrant life, as new arrivals often rely heavily on the support of established immigrants. As the channels between migration and settlement evolve, this ongoing process continues to raise important questions about our current society. ■ LEEMAELEE
