제임스 로젠퀴스트: 유니버스

태광그룹 세화예술문화재단, 세화미술관(관장 서혜옥)은 미국 팝 아트의 거장 제임스 로젠퀴스트(1933-2017)의 개인전 『제임스 로젠퀴스트: 유니버스』를 개최한다. 본 전시는 제임스 로젠퀴스트 재단과 협력하여 한국에서 아직 선보이지 않은 1960년대부터 2010년대까지의 회화와 콜라주, 아카이브 자료를 총망라하는 국내 최초 대규모 회고전이다. ● 제임스 로젠퀴스트는 앤디 워홀, 로버트 라우센버그, 짐 다인, 로이 리히텐슈타인, 클래스 올덴버그 등과 함께 미국 팝 아트를 이끈 대표적 작가이다. 광고와 대중 매체의 도상학을 활용하여 서사화된 이미지를 연출하고, 특히 옥외 광고판 화가의 경험을 바탕으로 능숙한 표현과 기념비적 크기의 작업을 통해 자신만의 미학을 구축하며 미국 팝 아트 운동의 발전에 중요한 역할을 하였다.

『제임스 로젠퀴스트: 유니버스』는 그가 회화의 경계를 확장하기 위한 혁신적 시도와 평생에 걸쳐 천착한 우주, 시간, 공간에 대한 여정을 선보인다. 회화의 가능성을 실험한 입체 회화, 매끄러운 색감과 미학을 갖춘 초기 작업부터, 초현실주의적 화면 구성, 점차 추상화되는 기법, 시간과 공간에 대한 인식을 탐구한 후기 작업들까지 연대기적으로 구성하고, 회화의 근원이 되었던 '소스 콜라주' 작업을 더하여 작가를 입체적으로 소개하고자 한다. ● 60여 년간 그는 사회적, 경제적 이슈부터 과학적, 우주적, 실존적 문제에 이르는 다양한 주제를 작은 종이 조각에서 거대한 회화로 옮기며 우리에게 질문한다. 우주의 신비에 대한 그의 호기심은 이미지의 확대뿐만 아니라 매체의 실험, 시공간의 이탈, 그리고 우주에 비해 한없이 작은 우리의 존재를 마주하게 한다. ● 거대한 평면을 통해 새로운 방식으로 세상을 바라보는 제임스 로젠퀴스트의 세계관으로 몰입해 보길 바란다. ● "우리는 모르는 것이 너무 많다. 여기, 우리는 자연에 있고, 우주의 신비가 주변에 있다. 이러한 미스터리를 그리고 싶다." ■ 세화미술관

Sehwa Museum of Art, affiliated with the Taekwang Group and Sehwa Art and Culture Foundation, is hosting a solo exhibition of James Rosenquist (1933-2017), a prominent American Pop Art artist. This exhibition, James Rosenquist : Universe, in cooperation with the Estate of James Rosenquist, will present the first-ever large-scale retrospective of Rosenquist's work in Korea, encompassing paintings, collages, and archival materials from the 1960s to the 2010s that have not previously been presented in Korea. ● James Rosenquist was a leading artist who played a key role in the American Pop Art movement, alongside artists such as Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Jim Dine, Roy Lichtenstein, and Claes Oldenburg. ● Rosenquist created narrative images using the imagery of advertising and mass media, while his experience as a billboard painter enabled him to render works of massive scale. This helped him form his distinctive artistic style which influenced the development of American Pop Art. ● The exhibition James Rosenquist : Universe showcases his innovative endeavors to push the boundaries of painting and his lifelong exploration of the universe, time, and space. The exhibition aims to bring together the artist's works chronologically, spanning from his early works, which demonstrate not only his radical experiments with objects, pushing the boundaries of the field of painting, but also his innovative use of vibrant color palettes to his later works, which explore the possibilities of perception of time and space, surrealist compositions, and abstract techniques. The exhibition will also feature the artist's 'source collage' works, which served as a preparatory approach to imagery, illuminating his practice, influences, and motivations in depth. ● Over the course of 60 years, Rosenquist explored a wide variety of subjects, addressing issues ranging from social and economic concerns to scientific, cosmic, and existential questions, conveying from small collage works to massive billboard paintings. The artist's fascination with the galaxy and the universe challenges us to contemplate not only the expansion of images but also experiments with medium, deviations from space­time, and our infinitesimal existence compared to the vastness of the universe. Immerse yourself in the unique perspective of James Rosenquist, who offered a new way of seeing the world through his monumental paintings. ● "There's so much we know nothing about.
