경남도립미술관은 2004년 6월 23일 개관하여 경남지역의 역사와 미술을 기반 한 다양한 전시와 프로그램을 통해 도민들의 풍요로운 삶과 예술 향유를 위해 다각적인 노력을 기울여 왔다. 그중에서 미술관의 소장품 수집과 연구는 미술관 기능의 근간이 되는 중요한 활동으로 소장품은 바로 미술관의 정체성과 특성을 나타낸다. ● 매년 엄정한 심의 절차를 거쳐 수집된 소장품 컬렉션은 한 시대의 흐름과 당대 삶의 흔적이 새겨진 문화유산으로서 후대에 전해질 '타임캡슐' 같은 의미를 지닌다. 미술관 소장품은 단순히 한시기에 고정된 유형 자산이 아닌, 과거, 현재, 미래를 연결하는 '시대의 정교한 조각'으로 남아 후 세대가 끊임없이 소환하여 그 가치를 재해석하고, 새롭게 확인해야 할 '미래의 기억'이라는 점에서 시간적 역동성과 다변성을 동시에 내포하고 있다.

이번 전시는 미술관이 지난 20년간 어떤 작품을 어떻게 얼마만큼 수집하여 활용해 왔는지 조망해 보며 미술관 소장품의 중요성과 역할을 되짚고 앞으로의 방향을 가늠해 보기 위해 기획되었다. 전시를 통해 소장품 1,439점을 분류, 분석하여 그동안의 현황을 관람객들과 공유하고 소장품을 구성하는 주요 작가 및 작품을 중심으로 지난 100년간 한국과 경남미술의 큰 흐름을 살펴본다. ● 전시는 1, 2층 전시실에서 섹션 1. 근대기 미술과 서양화 도입, 2. 새로운 미술실험: 추상의 전개, 3. 한국미술의 정체성 모색, 4. 한국적인 특색과 한국화, 5. 동시대 미술의 다변화, 6. 뉴미디엄의 출현: 미디어아트, 7. △'1. 근대기 미술과 서양화 도입'에서는 근현대 한국 화단의 토대가 되는 20세기 전반기 전통 서화에서부터 서양화 도입기의 작품들을, △'2. 새로운 미술실험: 추상의 전개'에서는 1950년대 본격적으로 추상이 확산했던 시기부터 추상적 조형을 탐구하고 아방가르드 실험을 선도했던 작가들의 회화와 조각 작품을 소개한다. △'3. 한국미술의 정체성 모색'에서는 1970년대 이후 미술계의 화두가 되었던 한국의 고유정서를 바탕으로 한 단색화와 민중미술 작가들의 작품들을, △'4. 한국적인 특색과 한국화'에서는 현대적인 방법을 모색했던 한국화 작품과 한국적인 특색을 소재로 삼은 작품을 소개한다. △'5. 동시대 미술의 다변화'에서는 1990년대 이후 표현방식과 주제 면에서 다양화된 동시대 미술 작품들을, △'6. 뉴미디엄의 출현: 미디어아트'에서는 동시대 미술의 중요한 축으로 자리 잡은 미디어아트 작품을 소개한다. △'7. GAM컬렉션의 수집과 활용 현황'에서는 소장품 분석 데이터를 바탕으로 소장품의 수집과 활용에 대한 각종 현황을 공개하고 관련 아카이브 자료를 소개한다.

학문적, 예술적 가치가 있는 작품을 수집하는 일은 미술관의 존재 이유이자 앞으로도 변함없이 존속할 미술관의 고유 기능이라는 점을 상기하며, 관람객들이 소장품의 본질에 한 걸음 더 다가서서 작품을 감상할 수 있기를 바란다. 아울러 경남을 넘어 한국 근현대미술을 대표하는 100여 명의 작가와 작품을 통해 미술의 역사는 물론 시대를 바라보는 다양하고 정교한 관점을 들여다보고 다음 세대에 전해질 소장품의 미래적 가치를 탐구해 보는 소중한 시간이 되기를 기대한다. ■ 박현희

The Gyeongnam Art Museum(GAM) has been dedicated to enhancing the lives and artistic appreciation of the public through a diverse array of exhibitions and programs rooted in the history and art of the Gyeongnam region since its inauguration on June 23, 2004. Central to its mission are the collection and research of its collections, which serve as essential activities underpinning the institution's purpose. These collections embody the GAM's identity and distinct characteristics. ● Collections, amassed through a meticulous annual deliberation process, are a cultural heritage bearing the marks of historical passage and the essence of their era, akin to "time capsules" destined for future generations. In essence, the GAM's collection are not merely tangible assets confined to a specific period; rather, they are "exquisite fragments of the times" that bridge the past, present, and future. These collections represent "recollection in the future" continually invoked by future generations to reinterpret, reconstruct, and reaffirm their value. ● This exhibition is designed to examine how and in what ways the GAM has collected and utilized artworks over the past 20 years, reflecting on the importance and role of its collections, and to gauge its future direction. It presents 1,439 works in the collection categorized and analyzed to share the current status of the collection with visitors, and the major artists and works that comprise the collection are examined, focusing on the major trends in Korean and Gyeongnam art over the past 100 years. ● The exhibition is organized into seven sections on the first and second floors: 1. Introduction of Modern Art and Western Painting, 2. New Art Experiments: Development of Abstraction, 3. Search for Korean Art's Identity, 4. Korean Characteristics and Korean Painting, 5. Diversification of the Contemporary Art, 6. Emergence of New Medium: Media Art, and 7. Acquisition and Utilization of the GAM's Collections. ● We hope that visitors will be able to appreciate the essence of the collection by taking a step closer to the works, recalling that collecting works of academic and artistic value is the raison d'être of the GAM and a unique function that will remain unchanged in the future. We also wish that visitors will have a valuable time to look into the diverse and sophisticated perspectives on the history and times of art through the works of more than 100 artists and works representing Korean modern and contemporary art from Gyeongnam and beyond, and to explore the future value of the collection to be passed on to the next generation. ■ 박현희
