무등에서 영산으로

무등산은 광주전남의 중심이고, 영산강은 광주전남의 젖줄이다. 무등산을 중심으로 광주, 담양, 화순이 접해있고, 영산강은 담양에서 발원하여 장성, 광주, 나주, 영암 등지를 지나 서해로 흐른다. 무등산과 영산강은 언제나 광주전남인들의 삶의 원천과 배경이 되어주었다. 이러한 무등산과 영산강은 우리의 과거이고 현재이자, 미래이다. 무등산과 영산강은 광주전남인들에게 마음의 고향으로 많은 미술인들의 예술적 영감을 이끌어 내는 주된 소재가 되어주었다. 광주시립미술관은 무등산과 영산강을 주제로 한 이번 전시를 통해 공립미술관으로서 우리 지역의 미적 가치와 무등이 주는 인문 사상 그리고 영산강이 주는 미래에 대해 조망하는 전시를 마련하였다. 이번 전시의 구성은 다음과 같다. ● 1-1실 광주시립미술관 소장작품 중 광주인의 삶과 멋, 그리고 광주의 역사를 주제로 한 작품을 엄선하여 전시하였다. 그동안 관람객들에게 보여드리지 못했던 광주시립미술관 소장품의 높은 가치를 볼 수 있는 기회가 될 것으로 기대한다.

1-2실 천정고가 높은 가운데 전시장을 중심으로 무등산을 소재로 한 전통적 회화와 현대적 사진작품으로 무등산의 무한한 아름다움과 기상을 보여주고자 하였다. 대형 사진작품들과 점점히 찍혀진 회화작품이 어우러져 무등산의 아름다운 풍경을 보여준다. 전시장의 높고 큰 벽면에 있는 영산강을 소재로 한 대형 벽면설치 작품은 '무등에서 영산까지'를 보여주는 대형작품으로 무등산과 영산강이 하나로 연결되어 있고, 영산강이 어머니의 강이자 어머니의 꿈으로 불리우는 이유를 설명한다. 더불어 이 모든 작품 가운데 설치된 질주하는 다섯 마리 말 설치 작품은 좁은 우리를 벗어나 더 크고 높은 기상으로 도약하려는 의지를 표현한다.

1-3실 계단을 지나 파란색 벽면의 특별 섹션은 광주시립미술관이 소장한 1946년부터 1999년까지 그려진 무등산 그림들을 전시하여 광주미술사적으로도 또한 조형적으로도 20세기의 화가들이 무등산을 어떻게 그렸는지를 보는 한번에 살펴보는 기회가 될 것이다. ● 아카이브 무등산과 영산강에 관한 방송 프로그램을 아카이브 자료로서 관람객의 이해를 높이기 위해 배치하였고, 더불어 무등정신을 문화적 사상적 예술적으로 공부하고 체화하여 새로운 무등의 역사를 만들어 가고 있는 무등공부방의 미술작품과 활동자료 등의 아카이브 자료를 통해 무등정신에 대해 생각해 보는 섹션을 마련하였다.

2실 사진의 기록성을 중시하는 사진철학을 바탕으로 꾸려진 5명의 영산강 사진그룹이 3년간 사계절과 밤낮을 가리지 않고 영산강의 시원지인 담양에서부터 목포 하구언까지 136.66km를 답사하며 찍은 사진 작품을 전시하였다. 영산강의 아름다운 자연풍광, 역사유적, 삶의 모습 등을 담았다. 영산강에 대한 최초의 대형 프로젝트로서 영산강의 모든 것이 오롯이 담기었다. ■ 변길현

Mudeung Mountain is the center of Gwangju-Jeonnam, and Yeongsan River is the lifeline of Gwangju-Jeonnam. Gwangju, Damyang, and Hwasun are located around Mudeung Mountain, and the Yeongsan River originates in Damyang and flows through Jangseong, Gwangju, Naju, and Yeongam to the West Sea. Mudeung Mountain and Yeongsan River have always been the source and background of the lives of the people of Gwangju and Jeollanam-do. Mudeung Mountain and Yeongsan River are our past, present, and future. Mudeung Mountain and Yeongsan River are the hometown of the hearts of the people of Gwangju and Jeollanam-do and have become the main source of artistic inspiration for many artists. Through this exhibition themed around Mudeung Mountain and the Yeongsan River, the Gwangju Museum of Art, as a public art museum, has prepared an exhibition that looks at the aesthetic value of our region, the humanistic ideas given by Mudeung, and the future given by the Yeongsan River. The composition of this exhibition is as follows. ● Gallery 1-1 Among the works collected in gallery 1-1 of the Gwangju Museum of Art, works on the theme of the life and style of Gwangju residents and the history of Gwangju were carefully selected and displayed. We expect that this will be an opportunity to see the high value of the Gwangju Museum of Art's collection, which has not been shown to visitors until now. ● Gallery 1-2 With a high ceiling, the exhibition hall was centered around Mudeung Mountain and attempted to show the infinite beauty and spirit of Mudeung Mountain through traditional paintings and modern photography works. Large-scale photographs and dotted paintings combine to show the beautiful scenery of Mudeung Mountain. The large wall installation featuring the Yeongsan River on the high and large wall of the gallery is a large-scale work that shows 'From Mudeung to Yeongsan', showing that Mudeung Mountain and the Yeongsan River are connected as one, and why the Yeongsan River is called the mother's river and a mother's dream. In addition, among all these works, the installation of five galloping horses expresses the will to escape the narrow cage and leap to a bigger and higher spirit. ● Gallery 1-3 Past the stairs, a special section on the blue wall displays Mudeung paintings from 1946 to 1999 owned by the Gwangju Museum of Art, showing how 20th-century painters painted Mudeung both in terms of Gwangju art history and formatively. It will be an opportunity to take a look at it all at once. ● Archiving Broadcast programs about Mudeung Mountain and Yeongsan River were placed as archive materials to enhance visitors' understanding, and in addition, artworks and activity materials from the Mudeung Study Room, which is creating a new history of Mudeung by studying and embodying the Mudeung spirit culturally, ideologically, and artistically, etc. We prepared a section to think about the spirit of Mudeung through archive materials. ● Gallery 2 The five-member Yeongsan River Photography Group, formed based on a photography philosophy that emphasizes the recordability of photographs, exhibited photographic works taken during a 136.66km field trip from Damyang, the source of the Yeongsangang River, to the mouth of the Mokpo Estuary, in all four seasons and day and night for three years. It contains the beautiful natural scenery of the Yeongsan River, historical relics, and lifestyles. As the first large-scale project on the Yeongsan River, everything about the Yeongsan River was included. ■ Byun Gilhyun
