제주현대미술관은 야외정원 유휴공간을 '1평 미술관'이라는 감성적 공간으로 탈바꿈해 관객 체험형 전시 '아트저지'를 지속적으로 운영하고 있다. 현대미술의 다양성과 작가들의 작품세계를 널리 알리는 계기를 마련하고자 2021년부터 다양한 전시 콘텐츠를 선보이고 있으며 2024 아트저지 7번째 프로젝트 작가로 이웅철 작가가 선정되었다.

이웅철 작가는 '기억 속 시간과 공간에 관한 이야기', '시대를 표상하는 기호와 오브제'를 통해 인간의 욕망이 만든 현재 세계와 그로 인해 찾아올 미래 세계에 관해 주목하고 있다. 1970~80년대 중동권 국토개발계획을 위해 젊은 시절 파견노동자로 일한 아버지의 체험을 바탕으로 한 일련의 사건들과 현장에서 수집한 중동의 열기를 품은 오브제들은 사적이지만 공적으로 작품을 이끌어나간다. 그 당시 중동의 상황을 상상하게 하고, 그 이야기 너머에는 다양한 욕망들, 과거와 현재의 모습들이 서로 교차된다. 과거 70년대와 마찬가지로 현재 제2의 중동 특수를 노리는 사우디아라비아의 미래형 스마트도시 프로젝트 '네옴시티'는 표면적으로 신재생 에너지, 탄소제로도시 등 친환경 도시건설을 표방하고 있다. 하지만, 그 이면에는 오일머니가 투입된 '건설 계획', 자원으로 야기된 '세계 경제의 패권', '왕권 강화', '광물 자원', '전쟁' 등 국가와 인간의 다양한 욕망들로 나타난다. 그리고 그 끝은 어떠한 모습일지, 그리고 과거와 현재의 동일한 반복에서 벗어날 수 있는 길은 무엇인지 작가는 질문을 던진다.

이번 전시는 자연에 거대한 인공물이 만들어지는 사우디아라비아 '네옴시티' 프로젝트 중 일부인 '더 라인'을 형상화 한 거울, 도시의 비전을 기호화한 도상들, 아버지가 중동 근무 시절 수집한 오브제를 활용한 영상 등으로 구성된다. 자연 속에 인공물이 어떠한 방식으로 성립되는가에 관한 질문들은 거대한 건설 계획안에서 국가와 개인의 상태, 실제 환경, 욕망에 따라 찾아올 예측 불가한 미래를 함축하여 보여준다. 『2024 아트저지Ⅰ: 이웅철 더 라인-기억의 거울』을 통해 보이는 것만이 아닌 보이지 않는 이면의 모습들을 상상하고, 체험해 볼 수 있는 전시가 되길 기대한다. ■ 제주현대미술관

The 'Art Jeoji' project, continuously operated by the museum, is an audience-experience-oriented exhibition that transforms idle space in the outdoor garden of the Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art into the aesthetic and sensuous space of the '1 Pyeong Museum'. Lee Woong-cheol was selected as the seventh project artist of Art Jeoji, which has been showcasing diverse content since 2021 to provide opportunities to promote the diversity of contemporary art and the art worlds of the artists. Lee Woong-cheol focuses on the present world created by human desires and the future world that such will bring about through 'a story about time and space in memory' and 'symbols and objects that represent the times'. ● Transforming private experience into public work, the work is led by a series of events based on his father's experience as a laborer dispatched to work on development projects in the Middle East in the 1970s and 1980s and the objects collected on site that embrace passion for the Middle East. This stimulates the viewer to imagine the context of the Middle East at that time, and beyond those stories, the various desires and scenes of the past and present that overlap. Saudi Arabia's futuristic smart city project 'Neom City', which aims to bring about a second period of Middle Eastern prosperity as in the 1970s, ostensibly professes to build an eco-friendly city of renewable energy and zero carbon. However, the other side of the project reveals various national and human desires, such as a "construction plan" invested with oil money, the "hegemony of the world economy" caused by resources, the "strengthening of kingship", the "labor and mineral resources of developing countries", and "war". The artist raises questions such as what the end will look like, and how we can escape the identical repetition of the past and the present. ● The exhibition questions how an artifact is established in nature and suggests an unpredictable future that will come following the national and personal states, actual environments, labor, and desires within a massive construction plan. This is achieved through a mirror that represents The Line, part of the Neom City Project of Saudi Arabia, where a gigantic artifact is about to be created in nature; symbolic images of the city's vision; a poem re-interpreting the record of his father's life in the Middle East; and a video work using objects collected on site, It is hoped that 2024 Art Jeoji Ⅰ: Lee Woong-cheol The Line - Mirror of Memory serves as an exhibition where one can imagine and experience not only what is seen but also what is seen behind the scenes. ■ Jeju Museum of Contermporary Art(JMOCA)
