함(咸): Sentient Beings

학고재는 2024년 3월 13일(수)부터 4월 20일(토)까지 백남준ᆞ윤석남ᆞ김길후 3인전 『함(咸): Sentient Beings』를 연다. 함(咸)은 "함께"라는 우리말에 들어가는 어근이다. 한자 느낄 감(感)과 통한다. 함은 우리의 영원한 고전 『주역(周易)』의 서른한 번째 괘이다. 함괘는 예술의 괘이자 남녀 사랑의 괘로, 만물의 화평을 상징한다. 『함(咸): Sentient Beings』 전시는 현대미술이 나아갈 방향을 묻고, 우리의 사유가 현대미술과 만나서 창조할 수 있는 상승효과를 탐구하기 위해 기획되었다.

학고재는 이번 전시를 위해 세 명의 작가를 선정했다. 첫째는 백남준(1932-2006)이다. 백남준은 말년에 『주역』을 즐겨 읽었다고 한다. 주역에 나오는 함괘의 가치는 소중하다. 이번 전시에는 미래의 인터넷 세상을 예견한 「W3」, 냉전 종식 후 이탈리아 월드컵에서 제창한 세계 화합의 가치를 기리는 「구-일렉트로닉 포인트」, 그리고 인터넷의 보편화가 인류 평등의 세계를 건설할 것이라는 작가의 믿음이 반영된 「인터넷 드웰러」가 출품된다. 두 번째 작가는 동아시아 여성주의 예술의 대모인 윤석남(1939-)이다. 버려진 나무에 유기견의 형상을 깎아 만들고, 그 위에 먹으로 그려서 완성한 작품을 출품한다. 사람과 동물이 동등하다는 뜻을 함축한다. 세 번째 작가는 김길후(1961-)이다. 변화무쌍한 창조성을 갖춘 작가는 이 시대에 맞는 새로운 회화를 추구하고 있다. 그의 예술 화두는 '현자(賢者)'와 '바른 깨우침(正覺)'의 의미를 회화로 표현하는 방법에 자리한다. 작가는 그림의 진실한 추구에서 여래(如來)를 발견할 수 있다고 말한다. 그것은 우리 내면에 이미 깃들어 있다는 것이다.

'Sentient beings'는 중생(衆生)과 같은 말이다. 호주 출신의 철학자 피터 싱어(1946-)가 제창한 개념으로, 그는 우리가 인간 중심적 휴머니즘을 넘어서야 한다고 주장한다. 감각이 있어서 외부 세계를 느끼는 모든 대상은 품계의 구분 없이 우주의 중심으로 대접받아 마땅하다는 뜻을 지닌다. 함괘는 다음과 같이 말한다. "우주가 함께 느끼니 모든 사물이 함께 살아가고, 성인이 사람의 마음을 감화하니 온 세상이 화평하다." ■ 이진명

Hakgojae Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Ham (咸): Sentient Beings , feauturing three Korean artists: Nam June PAIK (1932-2006), YUN Suknam (1939-), and KIM Gil-hu (1961-). The term "ham(咸)" embodies the essence of 'togetherness' in Korean, resonating deeply with the Chinese character for "feeling" (感). "Ham" is the 31st gua (hexagram) in the timeless classic, the Book of Changes (周易, I Ching). "Ham" embodies the harmony of artistry, love, and marriage, epitomizing the harmony inherent in all existence. Ham (咸): Sentient Beings makes a pertinent enquiry into the trajectory of contemporary art and its potential synergy with our thoughts. ● Nam June PAIK is said to have enjoyed reading I Ching in his later years. The values presented in "ham" are significant. The exhibition features his W3, composed of 64 TV monitors, which anticipates the future internet world; Sfera-Punto Elettronico, which honors the value of global harmony established at the World Cup in Italy after the end of the Cold War; Internet Dweller, which reflects the artist's belief that the universalization of the internet will construct a world of human equality. YUN Suknam, a prominent figure in East Asian feminist art, presents the work where she carved the shape of stray dogs onto discarded trees and completes them by drawing with ink, implying equality between humans and animals. Equipped with versatile skills and creativity, KIM Gil-hu seeks to pursue a new form of painting suitable for this era." He believes that one can find Tathāgata (如來) in the true pursuit of painting. It is already embedded within us. ● 'Sentient beings' is synonymous with 'living beings.' The concept was introduced by the Australian philosopher Peter Singer (1946-), where he argues that we must move beyond anthropocentric humanism. He suggests that all beings capable of sensing the external world should be treated as having inherent value regardless of their species. Therefore, the "ham" gua says: ● "As the universe feels together, all things live together, and the Sage inspires people's hearts, so the whole world is at peace." ■ Lee Jin-myung
