물, 형상의 회복 ● 늦은 오후의 햇살이 노란색 물감처럼 번져나가는 시냇가의 풍경이 지금도 선명합니다. 해는 서쪽 산을 향해 천천히 걸음을 옮기며 수백 가지 물감을 하나씩 풀어놓을 때 시냇물 속의 돌멩이와 송사리 떼의 움직임을 따라다니며 엄마가 오실 때까지 온종일 시냇가를 맴돌던 그때가 제 인생에서 가장 맑고 투명했던 시절이었습니다.

오전과 오후, 인생을 그렇게 반으로 나눌 수 있다면 저는 지금 오후를 살고 있습니다. 옹이가 앉듯 굳어버린 마음과 세월의 두께는 저를 더 무겁게 만들었습니다. 깨끗하게 씻어내고 싶지만 이미 제 인생의 해는 정오를 넘어 서편으로 기울어가고 있습니다. 그렇게 서서히 지쳐 갈 무렵, 어린 시절 뛰놀던 그 시냇물이 떠올랐습니다. 유년의 오후, 가장 순수했던 기억 속 한 장면을 화폭에 옮겨보고 싶었습니다.

생의 오후가 되어서야 소중한 것이 무엇인지 알게 되었습니다. 인간의 내면에 잠재하는 순수함에 대한 끌림은 결국 자연으로 돌아가야 하는 우리 존재의 본질입니다. 생태계를 순환하며 생명의 싹을 틔워내고, 키우고, 되살리는 물처럼 말이죠. ● 이것이 제가 물을 그리게 된 이유입니다. ● 이번 전시 『Active Waiting』은 저의 현실적인 고뇌와 영원성에 대한 소망을 담아내기 위한 개인적인 여정을 관객들과 함께 나누고자 시작되었습니다.

저의 작업을 보시는 관객의 마음속에도 희망과 생명의 울림이 생겼으면 하는 바람으로 수년 동안 작업을 진행해 오면서 "환란과 인내 그리고 연단이 마침내 소망으로 이어지는 모습"을 작품 속에 표현하고 싶었습니다. ● "물의 역동성"을 표현하기 위해 수용성 물감을 사용하여 수 차례 물을 뿌리며, 반복적으로 레이어 작업을 했습니다. 또한 수채화라는 장르의 한계를 넘어서 작품의 영구성을 위해 끊임없이 재료를 연구해 왔습니다. 그 결과 수채화 고유의 장점을 가진 동시에, 유화 못지않은 영구성을 갖게 되었고 이것은 제 작업의 가장 큰 특징이 되었습니다.

"물은 시작이며 생명을 위한 축복입니다." ● 하나의 물방울이 섞여 물길을 만들고, 그 물길이 강물이 되고, 강물은 바다로 이어집니다. 물은 생명의 근원과 성장의 원동력이 되고, 순환하는 기다림(Waiting)을 통해 번영(Flourishing)으로 이어집니다. ● 정체된 듯 보이나, 내 안에서 나를 일으키고 움직이게 하는 빛과 생기가 있어, 그 힘으로 살아가는 삶... 바로 그 순간 아직 일어나지 않은 그 번영의 미래가 현재의 것으로 다가오는 것이겠지요. 이것이 바로 "Active Waiting"입니다. 물이 한 방울씩 따로 존재하는 것이 아니라, 개체들이 어우러져 흐름을 만들어 내듯, 이러한 변화가 나만이 아닌 우리 모두에게 생겨나길 바랍니다. 그 흐름을 통해 번짐과 포용, 그리고 개인과 공동체의 삶을 깨끗하게 정화 시켜 나가길 기대합니다. ■ 피터문
