남자가 정장을 할 때는 결혼식, 장례식과 같은 인생의 특별한 때이거나 산업화 이후 지식노동자들의 유니폼으로 인식되었을 때이다. 남자가 정장을 입느냐 아니면 작업복을 입느냐 하는 것은 그 남자의 정치경제 사회적 지위와 계급을 떠올리게 했다. 오늘날은 그러한 일종의 관습이 많이 와해되었다고는 하지만 여전히 강력한 의미를 지니고 있다. 정치인들, 관료들, 교사들, 경영자들, 블루칼라들. 우리 사회가 선호하는 직업과 지위를 상징했다. 미디어가 발전하고 이미지가 중요한 시대의 댄디한 또는 힙한 청년들이 수트를 입는 모습은 흔한 풍경이 되었다.

유기호 작가의 청년들은 남녀가 뒤섞여 있다. 전통적인 남성상과 여성상이 해체되고 분해되어버리고 새로운 유형의 성역할 또는 성정체성이 등장한 이후 여성같은 남성, 남성 같은 여성이 평범한 세상이기도 하다. 오직 개인들의 개성과 특이성, 그들 또는 그녀들 자신의 취향과 세계관과 도덕관 등이 가장 중요한 덕목이 되었다. 그런데 아이돌을 떠올리는 멋진 스타일과 활력과 비전으로 충만한 청년들이 권투 글러브를 끼고 서 있다. 주먹을 써야할 이유는 무엇인가. 그들에게 무슨 일이 생긴걸까.

많은 젊은이들, 심지어 갓 초등학교에 입학한 어린이들도 아이돌을 선망하고 아이돌이 되기 위해 노력한다. 경쟁한다. 투쟁한다. 아이돌이 된다는 것은 수많은 선택지들 가운데 강력하고 매혹하는 욕망의 대상이 되었기 때문이다. 아이돌은 현대의 이상주의의 세속화된 형태이다. 세인들의 선망과 환호를 받는 멋진 아이돌이야말로 현대 미디어 산업이 창조한 슈퍼 히어로이다. 누구도 그것으로부터 도망칠 수 없다. 미디어가 있는 곳은 어디든 아이돌이 현현한다. 내장이 보이는 투명한 물고기가 심해에 산다는데, 아이돌은 사생활이 불가능하다. 그의 일거수 하나하나 미디어를 타고 공중에 투명하고 찬란하게 살포된다.

2. 날것의 두 몸이 부딪치고 떨어지기를 반복한다. 권투. 땀과 피, 근육과 힘줄과 민첩함과 과감하고 우직한 투쟁의 현장은 마치 로마시대 검투사들의 고양감을 닮았다. 인간이 지적 존재이자 동시에 육체의 격렬한 투쟁을 타고난 동물적 존재라는 사실을 떠올리게 한다. 권투는 오랫동안 한국인들, 어렵고 힘든 성장기를 보낸 한국 남자들의 심리적 경제적 사회적 성공을 위한 탈출구였다. 정신적이건 물질적이건 가난과 고통으로부터 벗어나기 위한 구멍이었다. 몸을 끼워 넣는 검은 구멍을 글러브는 가지고 있다. 누구나 억눌린 상태로부터 벗어나 자유로운 해방을 욕망한다. 권투는 젊고 단단한 육체를 사용할 수 있는 멋진 출구다. 밀레니엄 이후에는 멋진 몸매와 건강을 위한 스포츠로 권투를 하는 사람들도 생겨났다. 권투는 상대를 때려주고 승리를 쟁취하는 경기에서 가볍게 자신의 몸매를 관리하고 활력을 주는 운동으로 인식되기도 한다. 멋진 스포츠, 성인들의 놀이 문화처럼 느껴진다.

그러나 70, 80년대를 기억하는 이들에게는 여전히 권투는 깊은 인상과 기억들로 가득하다. 7전 8기의 신화의 주인공 홍수환, 미국 라스베이거스에서 열린 WBA 라이트급 챔피언전에서 레이 맨시니와 권투 경기 도중 사망한 김득구. 맨시니는 자신과 싸운 김득구의 죽음의 충격으로 은퇴했다. 영화 록키의 주인공 주었던 감동들. 가난한 청년은 고기를 사먹을 수 없어서 날계란을 10개 이상을 먹으며 단백질을 보충했다. 늙은 코치와 착한 연인, 가난한 동네의 친구들. 그리고 어려운 여건을 극복하고 스포츠 영웅이 되어 돈과 인기와 명예를 모두 쟁취한 록키는 현대의 신화였다.

고독한 두 사람이 사각 링에 올라 자신을 꼭 닮은 상대방의 눈을 바라보고 손과 발을 바라보고 마침내 그의 존재 자체를 바라본다. 상대는 나 자신이 되어버린다. 격렬한 격투가들은 서로의 몸을 때리고 부수고 찢어버리더라도 가족과 친구 이상의 동질감을 가지게 된다. 비극적 쌍생아다. 아이러니하게도 권투는 육체를 지닌 인간의 정신을 진화시키고 성숙시킨다. 성공한 권투 선수는 지혜로운 현자를 닮은 모습을 보여주기도 한다. ● 지금이야 MMA, 주짓수, 무에타이 등 다양한 격투기가 권투의 자리를 대신한다고 하지만 여전히 좁은 사각링 안에서 두 사내의 땀과 피가 튀는 원초적 폭력으로 가득찬 권투야말로 모든 격투기의 원형이자 동시에 인간의 내면 깊이 숨겨져 있던 어떤 진실을 함축하고 있다. 권투는 인간이 만들어낸 수많은 스포츠 가운데 마라톤, 레슬링과 함께 최초의 인류가 탄생한 이후 진화해온 수많은 문화와 문명의 기원을 떠올리게 한다. 우리는 정장을 하고 글러브를 낀 100인의 모습에서 우리의 내면에 본래 부터 가지고 있던 항거할 수 없는 타고난 폭력과 격렬한 경쟁과 투쟁, 공포와 불안이 혼합된 세계의 그림자를 감지한다.
