무수히 안녕

경남도립미술관의 기획전시 『무수히 안녕』은 누군가의 '안녕(安寧)'을 바라는 '염원(念願)'이라는 지극히 일상적이면서 동시에 더없이 원초적인 마음과 행위를 주목한다. 뜻대로만 흘러가지 않는 삶에서 누구나 한 번쯤은 현실을 뛰어넘는 초월적 존재를 찾았던 순간이 있을 것이다. 가령 새해 일출이나 보름달을 바라보며 가족의 건강을 빌고, 시험을 앞두고 합격 기원 부적을 찾고, 새로운 시작에 앞서 액운을 쫓기 위해 고사를 지낸 경험 말이다. 이처럼 생활 속 친숙한 염원의 행위들은, 그것의 진위 여부와 관계없이, 언어를 뛰어넘는 우리의 가장 진실한 몸짓일지도 모른다. 불완전한 인간은 끊임없이 현세와 내세의 평안을 구해왔다. 하늘과 땅, 산과 바다 등 거대한 자연 또는 영적 존재들의 기운과 교감하는 고대 애니미즘, 토테미즘, 샤머니즘에서 비롯된 세계관은 단순히 신앙의 차원을 넘어서 각 시대와 지역, 그리고 집단에 따라 굴절과 변용을 거듭하며 삶의 역경을 극복하고 고단한 일상을 지속할 수 있는 보이지 않는 동력으로 자리 잡았다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 오랜 세계관은 종종 낡은 미신 정도로 치부되기도 한다. 서구 중심의 근대화 이후 이성과 과학에 근거한 합리주의적 사고 체계가 설정한 성과 속, 생명과 죽음, 정신과 몸, 인간과 비인간, 문명과 야만 같은 이분법적 경계들로 인해 중심에서 밀려난 채 연약한 명맥을 유지하고 있는 작은 믿음들은 과연 이대로 감춰지고 잊혀가야 하는 것들일까? 이번 전시에 함께하는 6명의 동시대 예술가들과 2명의 전통공예 장인들은 주변부의 무수한 염원들을 전시 공간으로 소환한다. 이들은 의식과 의례를 단순히 지나간 과거로 여기기보다 애도와 놀이, 점복과 치유, 의례와 예술의 경계를 넘나드는 '공동의 상상적 자원'으로 삼아 잠재한 '얽힘'의 감각을 탐구하고자 한다. 다양한 제의적 실천과 예술적 행위들을 교차하는 작품들은 민속 혹은 토속의 이름으로 경시되어온 삶의 방식들이 억압된 역사적 서사를 환기하고 서로를 연결하는 대안적 지식이 되어 우리와 새롭게 공명하도록 돕는다. 특히, 선조들의 전통 기술을 고수하는 경남 장인들의 작업과 정신은 산업화를 겪으며 빠르게 사라져가는 자연친화적 미감과 노동 집약적 솜씨, 그리고 공동체의 정서를 드러내며 단절되었던 과거의 시간대를 오늘에 이어 보인다. 한 해를 마무리하고 새로운 봄을 맞이하며 열린 『무수히 안녕』이 서로에게 기꺼이 안녕을 보내는 마음을 회복할 수 있는 기회가 되길 바란다. ■ 안진화

Gyeongnam Art Museum's special exhibition, Myriads of Wishes, highlights the highly mundane and yet elemental sentiment and act of "wishing" for someone's "soundness." Things don't always go our way in our lives, and we all have had the experience of wanting to get help from a transcendent entity. We pray for the health of our families as we watch the New Year's sunrise or full moon, seek out talismans to help us pass important exams, and chase off bad luck ahead of new beginnings. Regardless of their authenticity, these ubiquitous, everyday acts of withing are perhaps our most sincere gestures beyond language. As incomplete beings, humans have constantly sought peace in the present life and the afterlife. The worldview that arose from ancient animism, totemism, and shamanism did not simply remain a matter of religious belief. It has been refracted and transformed in different periods and regions, becoming a driving force for people to overcome the hardships and adversities of life and continue their daily lives. Nevertheless, this long-standing worldview is often dismissed as a pre-modern superstition. In the achievements of the Western-centered modernization, rationalistic thinking systems based on reason and science set up binary boundaries such as life and death, mind and body, human and non-human, and civilization and barbarism. As a result, these small beliefs have been forced out of the center and remain fragile. Do they really deserve to be hidden and forgotten? The six contemporary artists and two traditional artisans in this exhibition bring the myriad wishes that reside in the periphery into the exhibition space. They use rituals and ceremonies as a "shared imaginative resource" that crosses the boundaries between the present and the afterlife, mourning and play, divination and healing, ritual and art, instead of treating them as something of the past. In doing so, they explore them to study the potent sense of "entanglement." Intersecting various ritual and artistic practices, the works in the exhibition help ways of life that have been dismissed as being folkloric or indigenous to resonate with us anew as alternative knowledge that recalls suppressed historical narratives and connects us to one another. In particular, the work and spirit of Gyeongnam artisans, who uphold the traditional skills of their ancestors, reveal the natural aesthetics, labor-intensive craftsmanship, and community spirit that have been rapidly disappearing since industrialization, connecting the temporal gaps of the past to today. Myriads of Wishes is opening toward the end of the year and runs through the beginning of a new spring.
