보통 사람들의 찬란한 역사

『보통 사람들의 찬란한 역사』는 조선 후기부터 오늘에 이르기까지 한국미술에 기록된 '평범한 사람'과 그 주변 '일상'에 주목합니다. 전시는 그리하여 한국역사 속 시대적 상황과 함께 평범한 사람들의 모습과 삶이 어떻게 변화해 왔는지 살펴보고, 한국미술사의 다채로운 변화도 한눈에 조망하고자 합니다. 이와 함께 전시를 통해 시공간의 축을 거슬러 역사가 된 시대와 다음으로 이어지는 시대의 다양한 초상들을 마주해 보고, 나아가 그들의 일상과 오늘 우리의 일상이 만나는 특별한 순간을 선사하고자 합니다.

시대의 초상을 치열하게 탐색한 예술가들의 작품은 그래서 시대와 삶의 결정체이자 역사서이기도 합니다. 그것은 예술작품이 당대의 사회상뿐만 아니라 시대정신과 미감 그리고 정서 또한 담고 있기 때문입니다. 한반도는 끊임없는 외세의 침략과 간섭 끝에 식민, 독립, 전쟁, 분단, 독재 등의 굴곡진 역사를 겪었으며, 현재도 세계 유일한 분단국가로서 과거의 역사와 이념의 갈등으로부터 완전히 자유롭지 못했습니다. 이러한 한국 특유의 역사적, 사회적 맥락에 더해 동시대에도 기억하고 기록해야 할 사건과 인재, 다양한 분열과 갈등이 여전히 존재합니다. 그러나 우리는 이러한 비극과 불행 그리고 혼란의 역사 속에서도 자유를 갈망하고 사랑과 희망을 놓치지 않으며 각자의 방식으로 삶을 영위해 왔습니다. 『보통 사람들의 찬란한 역사』는 이렇듯 각자에게 주어진 시대와 삶을 견디며 때로는 시대적 과업처럼 사람들과 일상을 기록하고, 때로는 지나온 역사를 새롭게 증언하며, 또 현재를 기록하는 작가들의 작품까지 한 자리에 모았습니다. 여기 국가와 제도의 권력에 의해 결정되고 자행되어 기록된 역사는 그 굴레 속에서 살아낸, 살아가는 평범한 사람들의 경험과 기억 그리고 예술가의 기록이자 작품으로 다시 쓰입니다.

이 전시는 우리 사회의 현실을 바라고, 가치로운 삶을 위한 새로운 시선을 제안하는 자리이기도 합니다. 오늘날 한국을 만들어 낸 주체이자, 사회 공동체의 희망을 이루는 것은 평범한 사람들과 그들을 둘러싼 일상입니다. '코로나19'는 늘 되풀이되어 지루해 마지않았던 일상의 소중함을 크게 일깨웠으며, 개인의 일상 활동 없이는 어떠한 '사건'이나 '역사' 그리고 '변화'도 일어날 수 없음을 명증하였습니다. 『보통 사람들의 찬란한 역사』는 평민, 서민, 민중, 시민 그리고 대중 혹은 개인으로 시대에 따라 달리 불린 우리의 다양한 처지 혹은 모습을 담아 시대와 사람 그리고 일상을 돌아보게 합니다. 과거에서부터 현재로 이어온 우리의 보편적 모습은 오늘날 우리의 모습과 확연히 다릅니다. 그러면서도 결코 다르지 않은 삶을 살아왔음을 알아차리게 하며, 현재를 재인식하고 미래의 우리를 상상하게 합니다. 또한 '시대의 흐름'이라는 미명 아래 놓치고 잃어버린 것들은 무엇이며, 이제라도 미래에 가져가야 할 소중한 것들이 무엇인지 생각하게 합니다. 더불어 모두의 꿈과 희망이 담긴 이상이 곧 현실이 될 수 있으리라는 실마리는 오늘을 사는 나와 우리 안에 있음을 알립니다.

한편, 이번 전시는 주제와 더불어 더 넓은 의미의 보통 사람들을 담아내기 위해 어린이, 노약자, 장애인 등 다양한 눈높이를 가진 사람들이 작품을 온전히 볼 수 있도록 했습니다. 그렇기에 이 전시가 일반 관람객에게는 다소 불편한 전시일지도 모릅니다. 그러나 예술작품에 접근하는 다른 방식의 경험은 다양한 신체 조건을 가진 이웃을 이해하는 좋은 계기가 되어줄 뿐만 아니라, '시선의 변화'에 따른 '보는 대상'과 '보는 행위'에 대해 생각할 수 있는 계기가 될 것입니다.

『보통 사람들의 찬란한 역사』는 독특한 역사를 지닌 한국의 보편적 특성을 전쟁과 평화 그리고 죽음과 사랑이라는 큰 틀에서 읽어보고, 그안에 내재한 다층적 서사들을 새롭게 들여다보고자 했습니다. 그렇기에 전시는 역사의 소용돌이 속에서 배제되고 희생된 수많은 사람의 고통과 슬픔을, 평범하지만은 않았던 삶을 포기하지 않도록 이끈 사랑 이야기를, 군중 속에서 그저 하루하루를 살아가는 한 사람의 평범한 일상을 담고 있습니다. 전시를 통해 다양한 지점의 시공간을 오가며, 역사적 사건과 집단의 기억 그리고 개인의 서사와 일상이 얼기설기 엮여 역사적 진실과 삶의 본질에 가깝게 다가갈 수 있길 바랍니다. 또한, 굴곡진 한국의 역사와 이데올로기를 뛰어넘어, 현재를 살아가는 다양한 세대가 서로 소통하고 이해하며, 더불어 살아갈 수 있는 작은 불씨가 되기를 희망합니다. 보통의 사람으로, 오늘의 일상을 사는 우리가 전시를 통해 과거와 마주하고 다시 오늘을 맞이하면서 우리네 찬란한 삶과 일상을 새롭게 일깨우는 계기가 되길 바랍니다. ■ 최옥경

Ordinary People, Splendid History highlights 'ordinary people' and the 'everyday life' around them chronicled in Korean art from the late Joseon Dynasty to the present day. The exhibition examines how the images and lives of ordinary people have changed along with the circumstances of Korea's history, as well as the diverse changes in Korean art history. In addition, the exhibition aims to travel back through the axis of time and space to encounter a variety of portraits belonging to the periods that have become history and those that followed and to offer a special moment where the everyday life of the past meets our own life in the present. ● The work of artists who have rigorously searched for a portrait of their time is therefore a definitive account of an era and the lives of people as well as a historical document. Artworks are not only a reflection of the society of the time, but also of its zeitgeist, aesthetics, and emotions. The Korean Peninsula has undergone a turbulent history of colonization, independence, war, division, and dictatorship after repeated invasions and interference by foreign powers. The peninsula, which remains the world's only divided country today, has not been entirely free of its past history and ideological conflicts. In addition to this unique historical and social context, there are still incidents, man-made disasters, and various divisions and conflicts in contemporary Korea that need to be remembered and recorded. However, through all of our history of tragedy, misery, and chaos, we have continued to live our lives on our own terms, yearning for freedom and holding on to love and hope. Ordinary People, Splendid History brings together the work of artists who endure their own times and lives to document people and their daily lives, sometimes as a task of the times, sometimes as a renewed testimony to the past, and sometimes as a record of the present. Here, the history dictated and perpetrated by the power of the state and its institutions is written by the experiences and memories of ordinary people who have lived and continue to live their lives within those confines and rewritten as the records and works of artists. ● The current exhibition also offers a new way of looking at the reality of our society and proposes a new perspective for a fulfilling life. It is the ordinary people and the daily lives that surround them that have built Korea today and fulfilled the hopes of the social community. COVID-19 has greatly reminded us of the importance of everyday life, which has always been repetitive and tedious, and proved that no 'event,' 'history,' and 'change' can happen without the daily activities of individuals. Ordinary People, Splendid History makes us look back at the times, people, and daily life of ordinary people, whether they were called commoners, denizens, people, citizens, the masses, or individuals. The common picture of us from the past to the present is very different from who we are today. But it also reminds us that we've never been different, and it helps us to recognize the present and imagine the future. It also makes us think about what we've missed and lost in the name of the 'flow of changing times' and what we should take with us into the future. It also reminds us that the clues to the ideals of everyone's dreams and hopes can be found within each of us who live in the present day. ● In addition to its theme, the exhibition also seeks to capture ordinary people in a broader sense, allowing people with different eye levels, including children, the elderly, and people with disabilities, to see the artworks in their entirety. For this reason, this exhibition may not be the most comfortable exhibition for the general public. However, the experience of a different way of approaching artworks will not only be a good opportunity to understand our neighbors with different bodily conditions, but also a chance to think about 'what we see' and 'the act of seeing' according to our 'change of perspective.' ● Ordinary People, Splendid History examines the universal characteristics of the unique history of Korea through the lens of war, peace, death, and love, seeking to shed new light on the multi-layered narratives inherent in it. Therefore, the exhibition captures the pain and sorrow of countless people who were excluded and victimized in the maelstrom of history, the love story that led them not to give up on a life that was anything but ordinary, and the ordinary life of a person who lived just another day among the crowd. It is hoped that the exhibition will allow us to move through time and space at various points in time and to get closer to the truth of history and the essence of life by interweaving historical events, collective memories, individual narratives, and everyday life. It is also hoped that the exhibition will spark different generations to communicate, understand, and live together, transcending the turbulent history and ideology of Korea. Through this exhibition, it is hoped that we, as ordinary people living our daily lives today, will encounter the past and embrace the present once again.
