끝날 것 같지 않던 전염병의 시대가 어느덧 막을 내렸다. 더 이상 사람들은 의무적으로 마스크를 쓰고 다니지 않고, 모임과 이동에 제한을 받지 않게 됐다. ● 나는 역병이 한창이던 그 어두운 시절, 내가 배우고 있는 분야의 전문성을 활용해 어떤 식으로든 희망이 되어줄 수 있는 무언가를 세상에 던지고 싶었다. 그런 생각으로 하루하루를 살아가던 때에 코로나로 인해 발생하는 엄청난 양의 폐마스크가 환경에 미치는 악영향에 대해 알게 됐다.  코로나가 절정에 달하던 2020년 초, 폐마스크를 재활용할 수 있는 방안을 고민하기 시작했다. 그 누구도 팔 걷고 나서려 하지 않았다. 그래서 내가 하고 싶었다. 할 줄 아는 거라곤 가구와 공간을 만드는 일뿐이었으나, 그런건 중요하지 않았다. 그저 졸업을 코앞에 두고 있던 디자인 학부생인 내가 그런 생각을 하게 된 것이다. ● 그런 식의 생각은 곧바로 행동으로 이어졌다. 나는 여러 밤을 지새우며 나날을 보냈고, 열과 성을 다한 덕분에 좋은 방법을 찾아낼 수 있었다. 그렇게 플라스틱 소재의 마스크를 재활용하는 방법을 기능적인 가구의 모습으로 제안하게 됐다.

나는 내 방식대로 세상에게 희망을 던졌고, 사람들은 이에 화답해 주었다. 그리고 그 덕분에 디자이너라는 직업을 얻게 되었다. 그로 인해 가볍지 않은 책임감 같은 것이 생겨나 안주할 수 없었다. ● 그래서 그때부터 지금까지 폐마스크 소재를 더욱 다양하게 연구했고, 더 다양한 폐기물에 대해 공부했다. 폐기물 무더기 속에서 더 많은 가능성을 찾아내고 싶었기 때문이다. ● 그 일련의 과정 중 '폐마스크에 관한 다양한 연구'중 탄생하게 된 몇 가지 모습의 작품들을 이번 전시를 통해 선보인다. 해당 연구는 사회적 문제를 해결하는 과정과 비슷하다. 내 경우 그 결과들이 작품으로 표현 되었을 뿐이다. ● 본 전시가 더 큰 공동체 의식과 지속가능성에 대한 관심의 불씨를 키울 수 있는 기회가 되기를 바란다. 지속가능한 삶의 태도를 안고 살아간다면, 우리 모두는 더 행복한 일상을 맞이할 수 있을 것이다. ■ 김하늘

The era of pandemic, which seemed unlikely to end, has already ended. People are no longer required to wear masks and are not restricted from gathering and moving. ● In those dark days when the plague was in full swing, I wanted to show the world something that I could hope for in some way by utilizing the expertise in the field I was learning. ● While living each day with that thought, I learned about the adverse effects of the huge amount of waste mask caused by COVID-19 on the environment. ● In early 2020, when COVID was at its peak, I started thinking about ways to recycle waste masks. No one tried to do such a bother. So I thought I had to. At the time, I was a graduate who only knew how to make furniture and space, but that didn't matter. ● My thoughts immediately led to action. I spent time without sleeping, and thanks to hard work, I was able to find a good way. In this way, how to recycle plastic masks is expressed in the form of functional furniture. ● Many people liked the hope that I showed to the world in my way. And thanks to that, I got a job as a designer. As a result, there was a sense of responsibility that was not light, so I tried harder. ● So I've studied waste mask materials more diversely from then to now, and I've also studied more diverse waste. Because I wanted to find more possibilities in the waste pile. ● Among the series of processes, we would like to showcase some of the works that were born during "Various Studies on Discarded Masks." This study is similar to the process of solving social problems. In my case, the result was just expressed in the form of a work of art. ● I hope this exhibition will be an opportunity to foster a greater sense of community and a spark of interest in sustainability. If we live with a sustainable attitude of life, we can all have happier daily lives. ■ KIMHANEUL
