집-집 House-House

북촌에 위치한 컴바인 웍스 아트 스페이스와 100년 된 한옥 양유당 두 공간에서 2023년 김민주 작가의 개인전 『집-집』을 10월 07일부터 29일까지 진행한다. 이번 전시는 북촌 한옥마을 안에서 한 곳은 한옥이 내려다보이는 공간, 또 한 곳은 한옥 안에 작품이 설치된다. 작가는 지금껏 전통 채색화 작업을 하고 있지만 한옥 공간에서의 전시는 처음으로 그 의미가 깊다. 집에서 집으로 이동, 특별히 두 공간에서 이루어지는 이번 전시는 마치 작가의 작품 속으로 직접 들어가 보는 듯한 느낌을 받을 수 있는 색다른 감상의 경험을 제공한다. 작가는 그림 안에서 홀로 묻고 답하는 과정을 시각적으로 표현할 수 있는 '문답 공간'을 형성한다. 문답 공간은 집이 되기도 하고 다른 상징적 공간이 되기도 한다.

『집-집』에서는 주로 '집'을 상징적인 문답 공간으로 보여준다. 집은 개인마다 수많은 의미를 지닌다. 작가가 생각하는 집의 큰 의미는 안정감과 편안 함을 주는 공간이다. 작품에서 보이는 집은 기와로 만든 전통 집이지만 그 안의 소품이나 곳곳에 상징물 들은 현대적이고 해학적이며 유머를 지니고 있다. 특히 열매는 작가 개인적으로 생각의 답을 찾는 비유로 각별한 의미를 지닌다. 보는 이에 따라 열매는 어떤 고민이 될 수도 있고 다산과 풍요의 상징이 될 수도 있다. 작가는 이 열매를 따는 행위를 통해 의문, 고민 등 바라는 바가 해결되고 이루어졌으면 하는 긍정의 바램을 관람객에게 전달한다.

첫 번째 집인 '컴바인웍스' 갤러리에는 여러 다양한 집들이 전시되는데 각 집마다 숨어있는 상징물 그리고 풍경들을 살펴보는 흥미로움이 가득하다. 바로 옆 창밖으로 펼쳐지는 실제 한옥들과 함께 한눈에 보이는 작품 속 집과 실제 집의 풍경은 묘한 느낌을 자아낸다. 작품 속 집이 현실을 피해 잠시 치유하고 휴식할 수 있는 일탈의 공간이라면 창밖에 보이는 실제 한옥들은 우리가 살아가는 현실을 의미하며 한 공간 속에서 해학적으로 보이기도 하고 작가의 작품 속 집에서 느껴지는 치유, 힐링의 메시지가 더 와닿게 느껴지기 도 한다.

'양유당'은 이어지는 두 번째 집으로 작가의 작품 속 공간, 다른 집(한옥)으로 이동하여 전시가 이어진다. 그곳에서는 마치 작품 속 집 안으로 들어가는 듯한 느낌이 들 수 있도록 기획되었다. 실제 한 옥의 문을 열고 들어가면 작가의 집 작품 안에 그려진 풀밭 형상이 나온다. 한옥 곳곳에 병풍 작업과 십장생도, 향, 그물 등의 상징적인 것들을 볼 수 있는데 첫 번째 집에서 보였던 작가의 작품 속 집 그리 고 현실의 집을 동시에 보는 시점과는 다른 공간의 시점으로 감상할 수 있다. 두 공간에서 보이는 김민주의 문답 공간(집)은 다른 시점으로 전시되고 관람객은 집에서 집으로 이동하며 또 다른 감상의 경험을 하고 치유의 메시지를 전달받는다. 작가가 생각하기에 작업을 통한 일탈은 현실로부터 거리 두기를 통해 생각할 수 있는 시간을 마련하는 것이기도 하지만 그 일탈을 통해 다시 일상성을 회복하는 것이기도 하다. 긴장된 현실을 벗어나야 사색의 여유가 생기며 그 공간을 통해서 성찰과 치유가 이루어지기 때문에 우리에게 '문답 공간' 집 의 소중함이 더 깊어지는 것이다. 집으로 들어와 작가의 작품 속 집으로 들어가고 집과 집을 이동하며 작가가 전달하는 사색의 여유를 느끼고 치유의 시간 이 되길 바란다. ■ 최주연

The exhibition will be held in two spaces in Bukchon Hanok Village, one overlooking the hanok and the other inside the hanok. ● Although the artist has been working on traditional paintings, this is the first time she has exhibited in a hanok space. Moving from house to house, especially in two spaces, the exhibition offers a unique viewing experience that makes you feel as if you are stepping directly into the artist's work. In the paintings, the artist creates a "question and answer space," a visual representation of the process of asking and answering questions alone. The question and answer space can be a house or another symbolic space. ● 『House–House』 primarily shows "home" as a symbolic question and answer space. Home can mean many things to different individuals. For the artist, the main meaning of home is a space that gives a sense of stability and comfort. The house shown in the work is a traditional house made of tiles, but the props and symbols in it are modern, deconstructive, and humorous. In particular, the fruit has a special meaning as a metaphor for the artist's personal search for answers to her thoughts. Depending on the viewer, the fruit can be a symbol of trouble or a symbol of fertility and abundance. Through the act of picking the fruit, the artist conveys to the viewer a positive hope that their questions, concerns, and desires will be resolved and fulfilled. ● In the first house, Combine Works, there are several different houses on display, and it is interesting to see the symbols and landscapes behind each one. With real hanoks spreading outside the windows the artwork and the scenery of the real houses create unique emotional experience. ● If the house in the works is an escape from reality, a place to healing and relaxation for a while, the actual hanoks outside the window represent the reality we live in, and they look humorous in the same space, making the healing and healing messages of the house in the artist's work feel more real. 'Yangyoodang' is the second house in the exhibition, and the exhibition continues by moving to another house (hanok), a space in the artist's work. It is designed to make visitors feel as if they are entering the house in the work. When you open the door to the actual hanok, you'll see the grassy field depicted in the artist's painting of the house. Symbolic objects such as folding screens, the ten traditional symbols of longevity, incense sticks, and nets can be seen throughout the hanok, which can be viewed from a different spatial perspective than the one seen in the first house. In both spaces, Kim's home is displayed from different perspectives, and the viewer moves from home to home, experiencing another viewing experience and receiving a healing message. In the artist's opinion, deviation through work is not only to create time to think by distancing oneself from reality, but also to restore normalcy through deviation. The importance of the 'question and answer space' [home] to us is deepened because only by escaping the tense reality can there be room for contemplation, and reflection and healing are achieved through that space. ● we hope you will feel the space for contemplation and healing conveyed by Minjoo,Kim as you enter the house in her work and move from house to house. ■ Choi Juyeon
