변이된 질서 Altered Order

담빛예술창고의 『변이된 질서』는 2023전남국제수묵비엔날레 시군 기념전으로, '수묵(水墨)'의 '생장화수장(生長化收臟)'에 기반하여 생겨나고 사라지는 인과관계의 의미에 대한 고찰을 담은 전시이다. 또한 전통수묵과의 관계성은 물론, 현대적 확장성을 담은 동시대 수묵을 선보이고자 한다.

수묵은 그 뜻에서 비롯되듯 재료와 기법적 측면 중심의 표현수단으로 생각될 수 있으나, 선과 여백, 흑백 농담으로 채워진 화폭에 내재된 것을 바라보는 관찰을 담고 있는 독창적인 장르이다. 본질의 이치를 희석하는 것에 중점을 두되, 현대적인 요소를 가미한 확장된 형태로 여러 양상이 나타나고 있었으며 이 움직임은 현재도 계속되고 있다.

『변이된 질서』 전시는 태어남과 죽음, 생성과 소멸이라는 거시적 관점을 중심으로 기획되었다. 시종(始終)을 따지지 않고 순환론적 측면에서 바라보며 수묵이라는 장르를 색다른 시선으로 논하고자 한다. 날이 풀리면 씨를 뿌리기 시작해 그 싹이 자라 맺힌 열매를 수확하고, 한 해를 마무리하던 농경사회 속 루틴(Routine)은 모호해졌다. 시종이 정해진(또는 되풀이 되는) 질서가 무슨 소용인가. 현대인들, 그중에서도 예술가들은 변용을 추구하며 과감한 시도를 이어가고 있다. 이러한 현상은 순리에 어긋난 '무질서'가 아니라, 동시대와 조화를 이뤄가는 과정이라고 볼 수 있다. 이 전시는 위와 같은 맥락에서 담백한 선조의 정취는 물론, 기법적 측면, 매체 수반의 형태를 통해 공간과 어우러지는 '변이적 면모를 선보이고자 한다. ● 끝 없이 '변이'하고 있는 동시대 예술. 수묵의 재료적 한계를 넘어, 공간과 어우러지는 동시대 수묵의 새로운 정의를 몸소 느낄 수 있는 기회가 되길 바란다. ■ 이명지

It aims to display not only the traditional facets of ink painting but also its contemporary extensions in modern artistry. ● Ink painting, while often perceived merely as a medium grounded in materials and techniques, stands as a distinctive genre capturing profound observations embedded within its black and white intensities, lines, and spaces. These transformations, emphasizing essence while incorporating modern elements, continue to unfold today. ● 『Altered Order』 is curated with the macroscopic perspectives of birth, death, creation, and extinction at its heart. Without being constrained by beginnings and endings, it approaches the art of ink painting from a cyclic standpoint, inviting fresh discourses. In a world where the agricultural routine – from sowing seeds to harvesting the yield – has blurred, one might question the relevance of predefined or repetitive orders. Modern artists, thriving in such an era, are fervently exploring variations and bold innovations. Rather than perceiving these endeavors as 'disorder' deviating from natural order, they can be seen as harmonizing processes with the contemporary age. This exhibition aspires to showcase such transformative facets, aligning with the classic tranquility of traditional lines, while harmonizing with space through techniques and the choice of medium. ● In an era of ceaseless 'transformation' in contemporary art, this exhibition invites you beyond the material constraints of ink painting.
