오래된 빛 Old Light 老光

오래된 빛 ● 컴퓨터로 그림을 그리기 시작하던 1980년대 초, 조형예술에 더해진 시간만큼 내게 새로운 경험은 빛으로 그림을 그린다는 사실이었다. ● 미술은 조형예술이라는 등식이 전혀 어색하지 않던 당시에, 미술에 있어서 빛과 시간의 사용은 미술이 더 이상 물질적 형태를 유지할 필요가 없다는 것을 알게 한 혁신적인 것이었다. 그러나 이러한 사실이 일상화 된 오늘날, 빛이나 생성 예술의 특성에 대한 연구는 우리가 뉴미디어 아트에서 주목하는 시간이나 상호작용만큼 활발하지 않다. ● 이 전시는 그동안 빛에 관심을 가지고 작업해 온 나의 디지털 평면 컬렉션이다. 이번에 전시되는 상당수의 작업들은 나의 디지털 평면 대표작품들로서 여러 번 다른 방법으로 프린트되었다. 특별하게도, 이 작품들은 1980년대와 1990년대에 제작된 디지털 페인팅으로 내가 직접 프린팅한 것이다. 뉴욕의 섬유 시장에서 직접 발품을 팔아 찾아낸 두터운 천연 마(麻) 소재 위에 직접 조립한 수제 대형 잉크젯 프린터로 오로지 한 장씩만 프린트한 이 작품들은 대단히 희소성 높은 것들이다. ● 이 전시는 40여년이 지나는 오랜 시간 내가 갈망해왔던 빛의 회화에 대한 의식 저변에 깔린 부채의식의 발현이라고도 말할 수 있을 것이다. ■ 신진식

Old Light ● In the early 1980s, when I started drawing with a computer, a new experience for me was the fact that I draws with light as much as the time added to plastic arts. ● At a time when the equation of art as formative art was not awkward at all, the use of light and time in art was an innovative thing that made it known that art no longer needed to maintain its material form. However, today, when this fact has become commonplace, research on the characteristics of light or generative art is not as active as the time or interaction we pay attention to in new media art. ● This exhibition is my collection of digital tableaus that have been working with an interest in light. ● Many of the works on display this time are representative works of mine and have been printed several times in different ways. ● Very unusual, these works are digital paintings created in the 1980s and 1990s, printed by the artist myself. These works, which are printed only one by one with a handmade large-format inkjet printer made by me on the thick natural denim found by myself in the New York textile market, are very rare. ● This exhibition can be said to be the manifestation of the debt consciousness underlying my consciousness of the painting of light, which I have longed for over 40 years. ■ Jinsik Shin
