잿빛 기시감 Déjà vu: In Shades of Gray

조성옥 작가는 2023년 5월 2일(화)부터 6일(토)까지 비트리 갤러리에서 『잿빛 기시감』展 을 선보인다. 조성옥 작가는 대학과 대학원에서 서양화를 전공하고 2007년 사진으로 매체를 바꾸어 홍익대학교 산업미술대학원에서 사진을 전공하며 사진 이미지에 담긴 자신의 기억을 추상화 하는 「데자뷔」 시리즈를 꾸준히 선보여 왔다. 조성옥 작가의 『잿빛 기시감』은 일관된 잿빛을 통해 기억과 상상의 영역으로 우리를 초대한다. 작가의 「기시감」 연작은 개인의 기억과 집단이 공유하는 역사의식의 교차점을 탐색하여 개인으로서의 자아가 갖는 향수, 상실, 그리고 그리움의 경험들을 떠올리게 한다. 그녀에게 있어 잿빛은 공허함과 충만함, 불확실함과 평온함을 동시에 불러일으키는 색이다. 조성옥 작가는 「잿빛 기시감」 시리즈 중 20여 점을 엄선하여 선보인다. ■

조성옥 작가의 『잿빛 기시감』은 일관된 잿빛을 통해 기억과 상상의 영역으로 우리를 초대한다. 작가의 「기시감」 연작은 개인의 기억과 집단이 공유하는 역사의식의 교차점을 탐색하여 개인으로서의 자아가 갖는 향수, 상실, 그리고 그리움의 경험들을 떠올리게 한다. 그녀에게 있어 잿빛은 공허함과 충만함, 불확실함과 평온함을 동시에 불러일으키는 색이다. ● 조성옥은 홍콩과 상하이에 거주하는 30년간 꾸준히 사진 작업을 이어왔다. 한국으로 돌아온 작가는 중국에서의 방대한 아카이브로부터 『잿빛 기시감』을 제작하였다. 그녀는 디지타이징 된 이미지의 파편들을 해체하고 쌓아 올림으로써 그것들이 지닌 의미를 해석하고 재창조해 낸다. 파편화되고 재조립된 이미지는 몽환적 분위기 속에서 작가의 진실에 대한 인식과 그것들을 발견하려는 본질적 질문을 드러낸다. ● 그녀의 작품에 나타나는 기시감은 종종 향수와 감각의 상실, 그리고 혼돈을 암시한다. 『잿빛 기시감』에서 그녀는 조각난 층들을 쌓는 과정을 통해 그러한 개념들을 탐구한다. 『잿빛 기시감』의 이미지들은 기억의 리드미컬하고 주관적인 특성을 드러내며, 나타나는 동시에 사라지는 층들이 생성하는 새로운 조형 요소들을 통해 새로운 시간과 공간을 유영한다. 그녀는 각각의 층들이 서로 간섭하도록 쌓아 나가는 '간섭 투과 기법'을 통해 작품에 깊이와 다양성을 부여한다. ● 그녀는 기억과 꿈, 과거, 현재, 미래, 현실과 상상 사이의 흐릿한 경계를 시적 시각물로 표현하기 위해 잿빛을 사용한다. 그녀의 작업에서 일관되게 드러나는 잿빛은 그녀가 갖는 기억의 모호함과 유동성, 그리고 편안함과 안락함을 동시에 불러일으킨다. ● 그녀의 작품은 자아의 경계 너머를 응시함으로써 자신의 진정한 정체성을 찾고자 하는 의지를 실체적으로 드러낸다. 그녀의 이러한 기억과 상상에 대한 탐구는 우리들로 하여금 자신의 경험과 감정들이 어떠한 방식으로 세계를 이해하게 하는지 생각하게 한다. 그녀의 작품은 우리가 우리 자신을 발견하려 할 때 나타나는 부정확성과 각색성을 동시에 포용하게 한다. ■ 케이트 신

나의 잿빛 ● 어느 날, 어쩌면 모든 시간과 공간은 나의 몸과 기억 속에만 존재하는 것일지 모른다는 생각을 하게 되었습니다. 찬란한 색도, 어두운 색도, 모두 섞이면 회색이 됩니다. 모든 기쁨과 모든 슬픔이 섞이면 어떻게 되어야 하는지 나는 알고 싶었습니다. ■ 조성옥

In this solo exhibition, artist Sungok CHO invites us to delve into the realm of memories and imaginings through her unified use of the color gray. CHO's Déjà Vu series explore the intersections of personal memory and collective history, inviting us to contemplate our own experiences of nostalgia, loss, and longing. Her color grey evokes feelings of both emptiness and fullness, uncertainty and tranquility. ● Artist CHO has been taking photographs for three decades, while residing in Hong Kong and Shanghai. After returning to Korea, CHO created Déjà Vu as a computer-generated digital artwork using her photography archives from her time in China. She deconstructs and designs fragments of one or multiple images, layering them to reinterpret and recreate her digital work. By fragmenting and reassembling images digitally, she generates dreamlike memorabilia and an atmosphere that bids us to question the nature of perception and discovery of truth. ● CHO's feeling of déjà vu in her original photographs often evokes a sense of nostalgia, disorientation, and confusion. In her digital artworks, she explores this concept by creating fragmented and layered images from multiple photos. These images suggest the rhythmic and subjective nature of memories, featuring multiple layers or elements that appear to overlap or fade away that creates a sense of temporal and spatial dislocation. CHO arranges the layers so that they appear to be superimposed over one another, creating a sense of depth and complexity in her artworks. ● CHO commands her use of gray as a poetic visual representation of the blurred lines between memories and dreams, past, present, and future, and reality and imagination. By using gray as a unifying element, she highlights the ambiguity and fluidity of memory and how it can evoke both comfort and ease. ● Indeed, CHO's works provoke a sense of willingness and expression to search for one's true identity by seeing beyond one's boundaries. Through her exploration of memory and imagination, CHO invites us to contemplate our own experiences and emotions, and to consider how they shape our understanding of ourselves and the world at large. Her works encourage us to embrace inexactness and adaptability as we navigate our personal journeys of self-discovery. ■ Kate SHIN

Emotional Landscape ● Contemplating the intricacies of existence, I delved into the notion of the emotional landscape. It dawned on me that perhaps all instances and locations we encounter exist solely within the confines of our memories and physical selves. Regardless of how thrilling or painful they may be, these occurrences tend to blend together, blurring their distinctions. I was left to wonder what would happen if all elation and anguish were to meld into one unified entity. ■ Sungok CHO
