여기, 우리 모두가 살고 있는 공간을 은유하는 화택(火宅)이 있다. 대칭 구조로 된 2층 가정집은 그 모양이 불 화(火)가 아래위로 두 개씩 놓인 활활 타오르는 불모양 燚(일)자와 닮았다.

항상 역동적인 움직임 속에 있고 어디로든 이동할 수 있는 불은 또한 문화적 배경이나 맥락에 따라 수많은 의미 사이를 횡단한다. 변화와 재생, 진리와 이성, 기운과 에너지, 정화와 희생, 신성함과 순결, 노동과 기술, 열정과 욕망, 파괴와 위험 등이 그것이다. 불의 다채로움을 탐색하는 이 전시에서 우리는 시각적으로 현란한 붉은 화염(火焰) 대신, 뜨겁게 달구어진 불판의 은박지 위로 당신을 초대한다.

Here, we have a 'hwatek' (火宅), a house of fire that metaphorically symbolizes the space where we all live. The two-story house, which is built symmetrically, resembles the shape of the fire character '燚' ('il') composed of two up-and-down repetitions of 火 ('hwa') depicting the roaring form of a fire. ● Always in a dynamic state of motion and able to go anywhere, fire crisscrosses over a myriad of meanings across different cultural backgrounds and contexts. These meanings include change and rejuvenation, truth and rationality, stamina and energy, purification and sacrifice, holiness and innocence, labor and technology, spassion and desire, destruction and danger. Exploring the diversity of fire, this exhibition invites you not to the flashy visuals of fire's red flames, but onto the sizzling plate of a burning-hot tinfoil. ● "From ignition to extinguishment, / From humanity's first fire to the Anthropocene's energy of fire, / From the fire of the sun to fire as hidden energy, / From the fire of the trash incinerator to the divine fire of the Holy Spirit, / From the bonfire that enabled community to fire as a fire demon (火魔), / From the fire of nature to the fire of humans, / From the visible fire that always rises to fire as we hear it, / From the flesh that fire has swept through to the extinction of existence..." ● Here is a space where the aesthetics of fire intersect and cross without reserve, Hestia and Jowanghalmae (grandmother deity of fire) reside, A maze where daydreaming adventurers live and breathe, And for some, Samgyehwatek ('the three realms of house of fire', Lotus Sutra) that one must escape in a hurry. ■ Gyeyeon Park
