제14회 광주비엔날레 기념전 광주화루 『친숙하고도 낯선』展은 현대미술에서 가장 친근하다고 생각하지만, 전통화에 대한 고정된 시선이 더해져 우리의 그림이면서도 낯설게 감상되는 현대한국화와 관람객 사이의 거리에 주목하였습니다. ● 2017년부터 한국화 공모전 '광주화루'를 운영해 온 광주은행이 기획한 이번 전시에는 역대 대상 수상작가 6인이 참여합니다. 광주화루 공모전 6년의 발자취는 한국의 전통회화에 뿌리를 두고 있지만, 현대의 재료와 시선으로 작업하는 작가들의 다채로운 결이 모이고 쌓이는 과정이었습니다. ● 이번 전시를 통해 오늘의 작업을 펼치고 있는 현대한국화 작가들의 손끝과 시선에 진솔한 눈맞춤을 해보시기 바랍니다. ■ 광주화루

The Acquainted But Unfamiliar, hosted by Gwangju Hwaru, is a special exhibition to mark the 14th Gwangju Biennale. The exhibition focuses on the distance between contemporary Korean art and the viewer, especially considering the general familiarity of Korean painting and the simultaneous emotions that stir among the viewer when presented with unfamiliar foreignness within the artwork. ● In the history of this competition, six grand prize winners of Gwangju Hwaru have participated in this exhibition organized by Gwangju Bank that has hosted Gwangju Hwaru since 2017. During the six year history of Gwangju Hwaru, we have witnessed an extraordinary number of artists explore color and texture rooted in traditional contemporary Korean painting. These artists have additionally utilized modern material, while bringing their diverse perspectives and practices to their work. ● In this exhibition, we invite you to approach the work with an honest examination, as well as flexibility in perspective, as you view the work of the artists on display. ■ Gwangju Hwaru
